Army guy here. My buddy is a retired Zoomie. He says that a STEP promotion is a REALLY big deal. So, I just wanted to take a moment and offer my congratulations to an excellent NCO who is working hard every day to be excellent. Well done Technical Sergeant!
Shades of GEN Patton, who supposedly liked to battlefield promote soldiers by asking them to introduce themselves. He would respond, "Son, you are so scared about meeting me that you didn't use your correct rank. You aren't (old rank) Smith, you are (new rank) Smith."
thats a great step promotion prank, fucking full bird "schooling" you on your uniform and reporting statement just to turn around and hand you a stripe
The USAF has the slowest promotion system of all the branches of the military. Why. Because it’s based mostly off studying the USAF manual and your job manuals. You basically have to memorize them and score high, they place very little on performance. In fact, almost nothing. You get a few points for medals but awards don’t get you anything. In fact there is a cap on medal points. So if your kicking ass and you max out your medal, points, that’s it. You could get the Bronze Star and your medal points are maxed out it wouldn’t help in the point department to help you get promoted. It’s the test. That’s it. . I know a guy that was airman of the year and did not get step promoted. If you have 1000 men in your career, your “testing,” against them. And they only promote a certain percentage. Say three or four percent. So out if 1000 Senior Airman, only 40 get promoted. And it’s almost completely due to how high you score on your combined tests. If your in a highly competitive career like Para Rescue or CCT it’s even harder. Highly motivated men, very few the same rank as you and everyone wants it. IMHO is a crap system. If your a slug and bring your books to work with you, study all the time, ignore your job, or if you have a desk job which allows you to study more your at an advantage. We had a saying, “fuck up, move up.” Fuck up,on the flight line and they desk you. Plenty of time to study. Suddenly you see that the guy that was shit in the flight line just got promoted. Interestingly, any commander can STEP promote any airman, at any time, as many time as they want, yet they rarely do.

The thing I hated more that anything was how officers looked at us enlisted....like we were lesser than them even though we are the ones who get shit done!
Why is the airforce so damn relaxed.... NCO's not addressing officers, much-less Full Bird Colonels as sir or Colonel... Guess this is why they are considered the easy service.
If you spent some time around the air force officers you would be able to answer your own question, easy service or not! If you want to see a poor quality affirmative action choice, check out the chief of staff of the air force and the chief master sgt. of the air force, that also should answer your question!
