I appreciate the explanation in this video. I was just watching a couple videos talking about how an ND Filter would help achieve better motion blur in recordings but it's more about the frame rate to shutter speed setting!
Lowering your shutter speed brings in MORE light which washes out your shot unless you use the ND Filter to lower that light to get a cleaner shot. THANK YOU

Just a minor point of clarification. I do strongly recommend using an ND filter on a gopro, makes your footage look a lot better and helps with dialing in exposure, BUT there is more to the story.
Doubling the shutter speed of your frame rate is the most common approach to video, and it is a standard. However, you can fuss with these settings to achieve certain artistic effects. simply lowering your shutter speed (ie 1/60 at 60 fps, rather than 1/125) will get you more motion blur, you can also play with this to your advantage, especially at high frame rates. Lower shutter speed means more blur, higher will result in "choppy" looking footage if you go to far.
When you increase the frame rate (and thereby the shutter speed) you are effectively giving the camera dramatically less light. The camera's auto iso setting will have to go up to compensate, making your footage more grainy. YOU DO NOT NEED TO SHOOT HIGH FRAME RATE ALL THE TIME. If you're trying to improve your image quality, fuss about with different shooting settings based on your preference, and the available lighting.
"Set it and forget it" shooting is never going to get you the best image quality. You have to learn how the camera works, then understand what you need to adjust for best results.

Thanks for sharing..... Yes, the 180-degree rule is very important for that nice motion blur but, GoPros have a huge problem between ND filters and Hypersmooth. ND's on GoPros are great in very bright scenes and some sunsets but, other than that useless unless you turn off Hypersmooth. Hypersmooth needs all the light it can get, without it, your footage is jittery due to being digital. Best solution that I have heard of for using ND's is the use of a gimbal with Hypersmooth turned off. This situation would give you the best use of the 180-degree rule for great motion blur for most situations. Thanks again for sharing. 👍😊

How do you know which ND filters to use in particular weather conditions? I have Osmo pocket and it shows me current exposition. So I use manual mode to measure amount of light and apply proper filter. In gopro there is no EV indicator. So you have to do it approximately? Thanks.
Amazing video ! so for my last car shooting shot I put ND filter then I forgot to change shutter speed to manual and didn't get great look but here is my question! I realized inside the car shot was darker and with AUTO shutter speed and ND filter on the footage became a bit noisy even in bright light! but I'm thinking maybe inside the car to use ND filter #4 and manual shutter speed hopefully will be fixed! Set this shutter speed with 24FPS is not easy for a car that constantly changes the speed and goes through different light situations! Will be great to explain please!

How do you pick between the filters? Do you look at the preview on the gopro to determine if its filtering enough light, or do you simply take a guess and whack one on and hope for the best? I've been struggling to get a good camera angle and am keen to up my game but this is a little confusing having to choose between them.
I just ordered these +CPL for my ace pro,, when should CPL be used versus ND+manual shutter?

Hey Rob, great vids you've inspired me to get into the ND game. Still using a Hero 4 and I tried an ND16 in bright light at the weekend at 27k 24fps and 1/48. Towards the sun was washed out though and away from it super dark, with the quality reduced to looking like 720p. Perhaps the cheap filters are just garbage as i struggled to find any. Maybe the answer is that 360 RS upgrade (affiliated of course).

Are the ND Filters compatible with the motovlog setup video's helmet configuration? I'm asking because another case with mic adapter I've seen isn't compatible with the filters without some sanding and filing

Traditionally the shutter speed is normally double the frame rate. However, I heard that for moto videos, or in general motorsports, because everything is moving much faster than normal, the shutter speed should be higher 3-4x times, apparently. What are your thoughts on this?
With high shutter speed it make video judder because every frame is sharp and clear, and no blur blending between the frames.

Do you keep Hyper Smooth off when you're riding with the ND's to avoid the jittery issue I've heard/seen? The free rides seem smooth but also nicely exposed! Got a Hero 9 on the way and hoping to get some good footage on sunny days!

Hypersmooth needs al the light it can get. Due to it being digital, once you place ND's on it takes some of that light away causing the jittery effect. Best to turn off Hypersmooth when using ND's.
If I go skiing in a very bright sunlight day with no clouds, is it necessary to have ND Filter? I will need to turn on Hypersmooth to help with the vibration of Skiing. I just used Freewell ND16 today with Settings at 5K, 30 FPS, 1/60 Shuttle Speed and the videos came out as Over-Exposed. Do I need to make other adjustments in GoPro Hero9 to make it work? Or do I need ND filter at all for a very bright sunlight day with no clouds and sunlight reflection from the snow?
You need a darker ND filter! The higher the number the darker the tint. If it’s super over exposed try 2 steps up to a ND64, otherwise step it up one to ND32.

When using ND filters, do you turn hypersmooth off? Since the low shutterspeed messes with the gyro and electrical stabilisation in the gopro
Hey did you find an answer to this? I was testing my gopro yesterday and the footage was utter garbage with the hypersmooth ON. I think you have to turn it OFF completely.

awesome vid, but you really do not need the nd filter correct? if its the evening not much sun and you are recording at 30fps and shutter at 1/60th and the exposure looks good then you can still get the affects of blur without the filter?

If you lock your shutter at 1/60 and ride in lower light conditions you would get the same results even without the ND filter. As long as the footage doesn't get overexposed. Am i right?

Hey Rob I have a question about the ND filters. Do you combine it with hypersmooth or not?
Hypersmooth doesn't work correctly anymore once you install nd filters and adjust shutterspeed to the 180° rule.
The footage will have motion blur but will also be definitely more shaky unless you're using a gimbal.
The problem is: hardly any youtuber tells about this issue.
I haven’t had any issues with mine. And like I tell everybody, I never knew this was even an issue. So yea I run hypersmooth with the ND

Yea man I hear this a lot. I’ve never had an issue with stabilization + ND filter. Still use them both and it comes out fine - absolute 0 issues.

syumassh haha awesome to hear bro! I guess with GoPro it’s be a bit of trial and error until you get used to knowing which one to use with how bright / how slow your shutter. GoPro’s don’t have an exposure meter so you’d be judging from the viewfinder which can be risky as it may not be accurate.

i assume that by increasing the motion blur with a longer exposure per frame we also can get rid of the background artefacts made by action cams, right? they get less visible, the moving background look more washed out than digitaly oversharpened while the bike and the more less static things your are looking at keep more detail, right?.
Correct. Although you'll need to keep your head steady if you want to grab a sharp image of your bike or whatever you want seen in detail

BOTH! If you want more motion blur you need to extend the shutter speed which will allow more light to hit the sensor, which means you'll need a darker grade ND filter (higher number)

stupid question, but can an ND filter be used at night?
There’s no really point using an ND filter at night as the whole idea of an ND filter is to restrict the amount of light reaching the sensor so that you can extend the shutter speed. If you use one at night you’d have to slow the shutter down to the point where you’d have a constant blurry image, or super grainy image from the high ISO.

gpH8 and ND filters is problematic for me. In 4K 24 fps, 1/48 doesn’t permit enough light to allow the Stab to work.

double shutter speed is to low for GoPro, image gets jittery because hypersmooth breaks. You can still achieve motion blur with 1/125 when shooting at 24/30 fps and the jitters get away. Even shooting at 1/250 isn't that bad

Here is one "small" problem, not even Gopro and his perfect electronic stabilization is build for that low shutter speed, you need at least 100 shutter speed to make your stabilization working properly. You may not have noticed, but with that low shutter speed is your whole image blurred exactly in the time when camera is trying to stabilize your image from shakes. Of course, the biggest shutter/fps speed = less blur. Same problem with my Yi 4k + :)

Ahhh interesting! Thanks heaps for that man. That being said - I am still impressed with how stable it is compared to its predecessors. No doubt they’ll be developing action cameras without this issue soon (or already have)
