Steam engine / Dampfmaschine Kosmos Technikus

- My second take on the Kosmos Technikus steam engine - and a rather lengthy one at that, so if you're easily bored don't watch it (or watch the last 30 seconds where the engine is actually running). The Kosmos Steam Engine was developped in Germany in the thirties as part of an educational physics workshop kit; I got one of the kits for christmas in the seventies:-)
Unfortunately Kosmos discontinued this particular science kit - probably because it wasn't any longer considered safe for children to "play" with. Let me stress again: The engine shown in the video wasn't constructed by me but is part of a science kit for education which was available in Germany from the thirties to the 1980ies. The kit is no longer available new. However, kits show up on ebay (search for "Kosmos Technikus") and sell for 30 - 90 Euros.
If you want to try to build your own anyway, keep in mind:
Construction of the valve mechanism is tricky and requires some technical expertise and either suitable tools - a metal working lathe for instance - or ingenuity paired with a DREMEL. I prepared a zip-file wit fotos and drawings from the instructions booklet which came with the kit. It can be downloaded from my dropbox; here's the link:
www.dropbox.com/s/w0q6dytn0h1...
(Let me stress again, that I didn't build the parts for this engine myself. And If you want to build the parts, you NEED to have some expertise in Metal work or know someone who has.)
Because I wanted a very shallow depth of field I positioned the camera at a distance of 6m and zoomed in; shutter speed was 1/120 so I could open up aperture an additional stop (2.8). Not an Ideal viewing angle but I like the colours and the light. The plane of absolute sharpness is a bit too close to the camera, sharpness dropps noticeably towards the window.
DVX100B in squeeze mode and progressive (PAL 720x567), blown up to 1280x720 with Compressor. Gamma setting Cinelike-D. - Věda a technologie
Your camera work is fine. It reminds me of capturing a photograph to paint a portrait from, keep a good distance and zoom then you get a truer picture more like how we would naturally see it with our own eyes while a little closer to the subject, we have two eyes with a spacing between and the camera has one eye (lens) so this helps to compensate but i'm sure you know that, its in case others reading your explanation on how and why you did this with your set up did not maybe quite understand. The colours turned out well also for all our enjoyment. Thankyou.
Wow!!! Ty you give me an information how is the steam locomotive is working.
Very nice self contained steam plant, well done
Muy hermoso juguete llevaba años buscando algo asi, gracias por subir el video....
Excelente amigo, felicitaciones buen vídeo.
Thank you, this is great!
Excellent work
hi friend its very nice ... cn u know abt wind power.
beautiful! Congrats
Muy bueno, bien desarrollado el montaje, gracias por subirlo
Excellent 10/10
It deserves Millions of views

Что только человек не изобретет ,глядя на работу самогонного аппарата
Buen diseño , y sobre todo muy ligero . Saludos Bruder.
Great video.
Gamma setting was 'Cinelike D' (D for "dynamic range": Barry Green in his DVX Book explains that this setting electronically stretches the dynamic range at the cost of a little more noise in the picture compared to 'Cinelike')
I think it's sort of nice video from start to finish with speechless, but stay runs well!
n' the requirements look easy to find. Thnks 4 the tutorial...(Y)
great video
amazing bro
Thank you . I will try to made .
can you use ethanol for fuel? Or candle oil? How long did it take for it to heat up enough to run?
Sure - that's what he is using. Any flame that will bring water to a boil will do for this tiny steam engine... ATB, Gereon
You are Genius sir
Very good
Of course I speak in the name of no foolishness "movent," all the movements of the 21st century. P.T. Higher Power and the presentation.
Nice make.
Super Bhai
This is the unique engine. Completely different working parts. I think the intake and outlet valve is in the crank rod.
It appears that way , valve inside the crank bar.

Excuse me sir can you explain to me the valve mechanism
Nice
Again this video is really ours- The "Teleport Club et all.).
gracias!
Will it work without the water ?? Just dry hot air …. Can try ?? Coz I watched numerous videos with just steel wool in a glass tube….
hello sir ,
I need some more explanation how the steam operates the flywheel mechanism. Please provide internal structure of fly wheel mechanism.
awesome
sir please can you me tell about some house hold things which can be used as apparatus
Hi Gagan Kumar,
I've altered the info text underneath the video so it now answers your question. Read it again please. I've also added a link to a downloadable pdf Document with some photos/sketches and description in case you want to try to manufacture the parts for the engine. sincerely
QeBom
nice
very clever
Super....
I like it indeed
@lexander5, thats great, enjoy your new toy! I sent you a zip-File on Nov 27th 2011; apparently it didn't get through to you?
What materials do you use to make this?? List materials to reply me
sir can you please tell me is it possible to make as a school project ?
and if yes then how can i make its parts
please sir its very important for me
Hey can you please explain me the piston mechanism..??
pls teach us to make us to make a piston
Sir very good and how are you made this
Very good
nice 👍👍👍
Do your steam engines exhaust and intake run through the holes bored through the drive shaft?
correct, David: there's one hole running diagonally through the driveshaft. It alternately connects the steam source with the cylinder and half a turn later the cylinder with the exhaust pipe. See my downloadable documents in the description for further information.
@lexander5 No,doesn't end with net. The attachment was about 3.5mb so maybe your mail server didn't let it get through due to size limitations ?(I didn't get any "can't deliver-this-mail"-message though). Anyway, enjoy your steam engine.
sir can you provide me with the apparatus names used in the project ?
anyone know the value of a rare kit made between 1935 and 1938 ?
hi shrinath iyer! you can find a link to further instructions in my other video: School Project Steam Engine. Read the Video Description in that video for further instructions as to how to download a pdf-file!
Nice Bhai

how you make iys valve
Ashutosh Sonker very good
Very nice s
Wat was ur gamma settings
i mean how much thick or Diameter of brass bush and height
Sir how to make this
May I have a copy of the PDF?
easy and fun
👌👌👌👌👌
hi can you please send me those plans and pictures so i can construct my own
Iska piston kise bnana ha
Legal
Very nica
wow very nice.👌✌
@lexander5 : really difficult to explain in english as I am not a native speaker. It involves a hole drilled diagonally through the messing rod on which the two wheels are mounted; If you provide an e-mail-adress I'll be happy to send you some sketches and photographs in a pdf file, just drop me a line.
Nouly the way I did it was, I took a bar and drilled from end to end, then drilled de holes for the inlet and outlet of the steam and finally closed both ends, was difficult to drill diagonally so I had to do that, and it works.
good may boos
I can make the small engine and set on toy
kull lol
How much to build that stuff ?. Can you build it for me ? I'm willing to pay $25 for that stuff.
Location : Indonesia (South-east Asia)
Thanks
i want full report of this project.plz send me as soon as possible.i will be thankfull of you.
AKBAR CHAUDHARY r u there

Mantap.. Coba di perbesar lagi gambarnya gan, terimakasih.
now ill also try to make steam engine for investigatory pojects just like him wht he did ...........................thank u very much for uploading this !!!!!1
Rotatin "hole" valve! More torque [than any those '"machined forever'" Sterling engines], cheep- again, no full lathe needed- regular person can do, and fuel! Highest score I give- 9 out of 10. (Nobody gets 10.... :) . ). Best all round, again all round.
Piston making at home
Il faut réinjecter la vapeur dans la machine et faire une turbo machine !!!
It is a smart work, but it waste energy. Thank you.
