  • Lately, my PS2 has been having a problem where it makes this grinding/ clacking noise when it reads discs. This started happening on Saturday, November 25th. Before this problem begun, I hadn't used my PS2 in a while. I recall the last time I used it was in October because as I said, I was recording game clips to show to someone at work and I had decided to take a break from my PS2 for a bit to play games on my other systems. I'm sure it must have something to do with the motor that moves the laser, but I wanted to upload what I'm experiencing and show to you all to see what you think is wrong. Anyway, thanks for taking time to watch this video and I hope to see what you all have to say.

think it's time to grease up the rail for the drive lazer
and maybe the spindle motor itself

Sounds like gear slip on the laser rail, open it up check for dirt build up preventing the the laser moving all the way back and forth (also grease the rail with lithium grease). The little piece attached to the laser rail is very thin and rides the metal gear rod, its made to "pop" if it gets stuck to prevent damage, screws on that could be loose too. I assume you haven't messed with the laser ribbon cable at all? (lot of slims ribbon adhesive goes bad and allows the ribbon to scratch discs so people either glue/tape them but if done to tight the laser wont be able to move all the way down towards the spindle. I'd definitely pop the top off and test it with a disc running and watch how everything is moving to see what starts messing up.

Actually, last Friday night, I was fooling around and poking a toothpick in the door sensor of the system and I was watching the laser as it moved. For a while, it seemed to be working just fine, until eventually, it kept stopping and making that grinding noise, as if something was stopping it. I'm almost certain it's an issue with the rail it moves on, but I'm not entirely sure, as I've never opened up this console before, ever. I would like to disassemble it and see what's inside, but I currently don't have a screwdriver kit.

Tengo una PS2 Fat que hace exactamente el mismo ruido, limpie todo el lector y engrase los rieles y sonaba exactamente igual por lo que el ruido parece provenir únicamente de la lente

    Sorry to hear that, man.
    But I don't think it's completely broken.
Check the parts in the CD compartment where the laser that reads the CD is located, the inside of the device or the place I mentioned may be dusty. If so, try oiling it.

Hmmm, I'd definitely open it up and see if it might need cleaned, like the laser or the railing or maybe the spindle motor.
I'm unsure of the exact issue but it could also be the ribbon cable needing replaced

Buy yourself a FMCB Card and never use this DVD-Drive again… the clicking will stop…

Well part of the problem was I had something sitting on top of the tray than I took it apart and it just needed cleaned than works great now at first it wasn’t playing any games when that happened the disc wasn’t spinning so I figured the spinner was loose and I was right that could also be your problem too ur spinner could be loose also make sure not to set anything on top of the tray cuz the disc could hit the top of the tray cuz if you press on it a little I figured it made that noise when pressure is sitting on the tray that could also be your problem too
