    It's a serious stretch to label "Sophie's Choice" as a world war film, it featured one fairly short World War II flashback but was otherwise set in the 1950s. The flashback was important to Sophie's mindset, however the movie's setting wasn't during the war.

    I think you did an excellent job and nothing stated in my opinions that follow should discredit yours at all. These are opinions of course. Its wonderful to have the opportunity to view your excellent video and think through this most difficult and misguided of film genres.
    Generally us appreciate far more rare anti-war movies. Very few exist. Certainly not the Private Ryans and Dunkirks. Although I admire many on your top 10 I prefer your next 10. But apart from omitting thin red line I think your choices were excellent across all films named with only a few tiny exceptions. Private Ryan excellent but heroism at end schmaltzy at best. Same true that "All quiet..." chose to leave book and wallow in dramatic end. Book is unquestionably more important ww1/2 book ever. Fury was puzzling. And I felt Dunkirk was all about cinematography and was lacking in most everything else starting with 1 dimensional characters. I feel war has to have incredibly detailed characters or mere pawns, as "Come and See" did so successfully. Schindlers was spectacular apart from Schindler but I do feel "Come and See" is the one movie that unrelentingly captures the horrors of war. No drama or heroes required in war. Just the horror it is. Of the American movies only Thin Red Line approached this apart from, once again, the dying swan ending of the hero.

      Thanks for the nuanced perspective! It’s clear you have a deep appreciation for the complexities and subtleties of war films. We completely agree that the war genre often walks a fine line between glorification and the stark reality of conflict, and finding films that authentically capture the horror of war without leaning into heroism can be rare.
      "Come and See" is indeed a haunting portrayal of war's true nature, stripping away any romanticized notions and focusing on the sheer brutality. It’s a film that leaves a lasting impression with its raw, unflinching depiction; a film that can actually change people's minds about war.
      Your mention of "The Thin Red Line" is also spot on-it offers a reflective and philosophical take on war, emphasizing the internal struggles of its characters amidst the chaos. Thank you for engaging with the video and sharing your insights.

      Yes. "The Longest Day" (1962) is a classic and highly regarded World War II film. While it didn't make our list, it remains one of the most comprehensive and star-studded depictions of D-Day. Thank you for highlighting it!

    How can I take you serious when you did not have Lawrence of Arabia anywhere on this list. The cinematography alone would have made it number one let alone the musical score the acting. It won 7 academy awards the same as your number one. I have to assume you know nothing about war movies that were made before you were born. Yes you had Casablanca as the only movie made in the golden age of Hollywood, but what about Patton, The longest day, The great escape, bridge over the river Kwai, Pearl Harbor, The Battle of Britain, The big Red One, Iwo Jima, The sand Pebbles, 55 days in Peaking, Gettysburg, The great Dictator, the list goes on and on. You know nothing John Snow! All of that was on the top of my head, if I had more time I could name 100 more that are better than half of your list. If you were a student of mine and that was your assignment I would give you a D+ maybe a C- and I would write on your paper in blood red ink, you didn’t understand the assignment, not your top 10, THE top 10.

      Thank you for sharing your perspective so passionately. While it's clear that Lawrence of Arabia is a cinematic masterpiece with its stunning cinematography, exceptional acting, and iconic score, the list reflects a particular set of criteria that might not resonate with everyone. Also, LOA wasn't closely related to World Wars and tells the story of a heroic individual during this time. In addition, each selection was made to represent a diverse range of war films that have had a significant cultural, emotional, or cinematic impact, though we fully acknowledge that there are many other deserving titles, including those you mentioned. Your feedback is valued, and it’s always great to hear from someone with a deep appreciation for classic war films.

      Thank you for the feedback. You're passionate about classic war films. Many of the titles you mentioned are classic depictions of WWII that have earned their place in cinematic history.
      "Inglourious Basterds," while a more modern and stylized take on war, has its own audience, but I understand it may not resonate with everyone. "Cross of Iron" and "Kelly's Heroes" are also amazing with unique perspectives and narratives.

    Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's should be 1 - 2. Oppenheimer is over-rated.

    • @framefocusofficial
      @framefocusofficial  Před 23 dny

      Both Spielberg films are indeed powerful narratives that have left a significant mark on the war movie genre. As for the "Oppenheimer", while some may find it overrated, it brings a different perspective by delving into the moral and ethical complexities surrounding the creation of the atomic bomb.

    • @alleyeditor
      @alleyeditor Před 22 dny

      @@framefocusofficial You are right about Oppenheimer. It is a different perspective. IMOP Nolan tried and failed by including Strauss going after Oppenheimer over spite and jealousy. It took away the movies power which was about building the bomb and dropping it. The movie should have ended there. My other problem with the movie is the relationships of Oppenheimer's wife and mistress. Nolan spent all of maybe ten minutes on those relationships and they were far more interesting and important to who Oppenheimer was. Just my opinion. Right, wrong or otherwise. Thanks for engaging though. Always love to talk film.

      Thanks for the candid feedback. "Das Boot," "Paths of Glory," and "Come and See" ARE included in our Notable Mentions section towards the end of the video.
      "The Eagle Has Landed," "A Bridge Too Far," and "The Thin Red Line" are definitely highly acclaimed films that have made significant contributions to the war movie genre with unique perspectives and powerful narratives.
      While the list may not align with everyone's perspectives and there are undoubtedly many other deserving titles, our goal was to curate a diverse range of films that have made a significant cultural, emotional, and cinematic impact.

Story and most of the characters, so bad... In your list of movies that didn't make it, or mentioned in the comment section, there are movies a million times better than IB.

      We understand that "Inglourious Basterds" can be a polarizing film, and it may not appeal to everyone. While some viewers appreciate its unique take on World War II and the performances, others might not find it to their taste. Our goal was to include a variety of films that represent different styles and perspectives on the war.

    Inglorious Basterds? You have to be kidding me. An utterly fake movie. And that silly Fireflies animation
    film? You must have been stoned making this bad list. Only one film from the 40s and one from the 50s?
    Most of these "best movies" are put together by people born after the 1980s with only a partial notion of
    film history. I'm sorry but Oppenheimer is WAAAAY overrated and confusing; and with a lot of actors doing
    a bad job by mumbling their lines. And Christopher Nolan is also overrated as well. How about 1949s great
    film Battleground? Or 1945s Objective Burma? Fury has no business on a "great" list as it's a piece of junk.
    A much better tank film is 1943's Sahara with Bogart. A terrific and underrated WW2 movie is Von Ryan's
    Express from 1965 with Frank Sinatra & Trevor Howard. And of course you missed The Great Escape.
    How about The Guns of Navarone with Gregory Peck? And Shindler's List should never have been the
    number 1 film----I wouldn't have had in the top 10. Someone below mentioned When Trumpets Fade.
    That's a terrific WW2 movie from 2004, I think. And you can't have a best WW2 list without The Bridge
    On The River Kwai. So many films, so many bungled opportunities.

      These are truly outstanding movies you mentioned. Your knowledge and passion for classic war films are commendable. Our list aimed to capture a range of perspectives and styles, and while we included films like "Inglourious Basterds" and "Grave of the Fireflies" for their unique narrative approaches and emotional impact, we understand they may not resonate with everyone. Classic films like "Battleground," "Objective, Burma!," and "The Bridge on the River Kwai" are fantastic and certainly deserve recognition for their contributions to the war genre. We'll definitely consider these titles and others you mentioned for future lists. Thank you for your detailed feedback and for contributing greatly to the discussion.

    The reasons Russian war movies are great are, the Russians speak Russian, the Germans speak German, etc. with the voiceovers translating the other languages into Russian and the CC are in English. Before the Russian soldiers do anything the Generals and when possible, Stalin, sit down and go over what they are going to do, they tell what armies are going where and why.

    • @framefocusofficial
      @framefocusofficial  Před 17 dny

      Agreed. The authenticity of languages and the detailed strategic discussions portrayed in these films do contribute to their realism and depth. These elements not only enhance the immersive experience but also provide a more accurate portrayal of the complexities of war.
