Game Asset Pipeline : 3D-Coat Auto Retopology

  • This is the second step of the Game Asset Creation pipeline: Retopology.
    I use tools like Blender or 3D-Coat for retopo, but in this part I will show you - because we never had a tutorial for this - how to use the Auto Retopology feature of 3D-Coat.
    Basically it is an algorithm that tries to create a low poly mesh with a certain amount of polygons automatically.
    When the retopo mesh is created, you can still adjust the mesh with tools like edge delete, insertion or a brush tool to relax the topology.
    3D-Coat is not a free tool, but there are affordable licenses for indie game developers as well.

    You can directly export High poly mesh directly by default '3D coat app link' addon in blender!

    Thanks for the video, - but if I did retopology in another editor and made a large pothole on the highpoly-model, can I automatically lower the retopology on the pothole in 3d-coat?

    Hi! First of all, thanks for the Video! I just started working with Unreal Engine to create a game. But because i cant afford all these assets, i have to make my own.
    But i have a small problem. When i load the Object into 3D Coat, and do the exact same as you did, i do not get the same result like you. My Object just looks like the same as in blender, i dont have the yellow/green "Texture" and also no grid. Do you have a solution for me how to solve this? I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you very much! :)

    This is great! I have one question: at this point, how can I use the high poly mesh to make a normal map for the low poly mesh?

    • @JayAnAm
      @JayAnAm  Před 5 lety +5

      I will cover this in the next video, in which I will bake the normal map with Substance Painter, which makes it really easy and with good quality. Other possibilities are baking it with Blender and Cycles or using a tool like xNormal (which is free).

    I've made a character that I will animate for a fighting game. I've just finished sculpting in zbrush and wasnt sure if I should use zremesher. What method would be the best way to retoplogise a character for animation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      for thing that has to move, i think you have to retopo by hand, because you need to know how much geometry you need for the deformation of the rig

    Can we use the first base mesh before sculpting as a low poly ? or we must do the retopo to the high poly mesh ?

    • @JayAnAm
      @JayAnAm  Před 4 lety +2

      You can do this, but I like to create a retopo in most cases just for optimization reasons

    I haven't used 3d coat much ,so can I know which features are good and easy in 3d coat in comparison with blender in your point of view :)

    • @JayAnAm
      @JayAnAm  Před 5 lety +1

      * The sculpting is good and fast, but I use Zbrush most of the time, Blender is slower but I like the brushes more
      * Retopo is built-in and very powerful
      * Texturepainting is great in 3D-Coat and it has full PBR support
      * Hardsurface sculpting is supported with booleans, primitives, cut-outs with free shapes
