    I bought my 2017 Promaster van 3 years ago.
    I even bought my Goal Zero Yetti 1000 3 years ago to set up.
    Your videos are by far the most valuable to me because I can actually follow the steps.
    The products to buy links are great too.
    I have watched over 200 how to videos the past 3 years. Your videos truly offer the best guidance.
    I finally started to build last Sunday. I will have to hire someone to install my Maxx fan before the rainy season or have to wait until next summer.

    I wentcin the opposite direction! Kept it Simple. I use a jackery 1000 and just added a jackery 2000. I have rechargeable led lights w magnets so I can move them around I am added LED Strip lights. I have 45qt ICECO Freezer fridge running directly off the 12v socket of 1 jackery I will run the maxxair off the other one's 12v socket. I car recharge jackery while I drive or since I am more RV Camper than #vanlife I can recharge in Campground or at home. I have 9 usb, 6 110 AC and 3 12v and may add 2 more 12v near side and back door? So the only wiring I need to do is 12v plug to Maxxair and any 12v sockets I add. My jackery have built in inverters so can run Everything Microwave, Insta pot, blender, induction stove, heaters, electric Blankets all just plug into AC,DC or USB Outlets already there on the jackery power stations. I do Not have solar yet? May get portable panels? I like those becux I can park in the shade - if available - and charge jackery w panels in the sunlight, not turn van into an over in the sun. I just want to keep my build simple.

      That’s great! Even though we wired everything in it is still a very basic system compared to some of the beefy diy systems out there. We could easily switch out our Goal Zero for a Jackery and run everything pretty much the exact same way. Definitely do what works for you! If you have questions on anything let me know and I could try and help. The portable panels sounds like a great idea! There are some great options out there for that! I’ve even thought about adding some to make our system larger since we only have 200 watts on the roof.

      @Trailvagabonds  Před rokem

      Hey! Thanks for following along, glad the videos have been helpful to you! We personally don’t have an adapter because we can always find a standard 15 amp outlet for our extension cord and pass thru shore power plug. A 30 amp service wont charge a goal zero any faster than a standard outlet. But if you are at a campground where there is only a 30 amp service i would expect a 30 amp to 15 amp adapter would be helpful for charging. It hasn’t been something I’ve ran into however so it hasn’t crossed my mind to buy an adapter. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have other questions 😃

      I think Goal Zero is rebranding the Anderson Power Pole as the HPP. It is the same connector and the standard sized Anderson connector can output up to 45amps over the 30amp max output. I used this Anderson to ring terminal that I found on Amazon~amzn.to/3agzsFU
      You could make one yourself or use a different pre-made cord too. For the run length and max output using Blue Sea's wire gauge chart it should be spec'd well for the fuse block. Let me know if you have other questions 🙌🏻

      Thanks for watching! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! You'll get there! It's definitely a process but feels so rewarding as you check projects off your list. One way I had tested things was with a 12v drill battery. When it's removed from the drill the leads are exposed and you can press your wires to it. Just make sure it's 12v and not 18 which some are. That could ruin your appliances. Hope that helps! I'd love to see your rig someday!

    The switches you link to are SPST (Single Pole Single Throw). But it looks like you are wiring them to function as "3-way" (2 locations) SPDT switches. Are these switches really 3-way switches?

    • @Trailvagabonds

      The SPST switch listed was the one I used for the garage lights. I ended up calling American Technology Components to make me a switch to pair with the dimmer because I couldn't find one in the same style that would work with it in my search. I originally purchased one that said it was 12v but it actually was not. Are you using one of the older lithium systems, a v2? If you have the newer X line you no longer need a Max current cable because they now have a 30 amp output from the HPP... If Goal Zero doesn't have an item I usually always check B&H Camera because if had luck getting things from them but they are out of stock too. Probably a supply chain issues sadly. I'm not sure where else you could find one. Sometimes different outdoor retailers carrier them. It can be hit or miss however. Sorry I can't be much more help

    Okay… so are the wires coming from the fan a smaller gauge than the wires they’re connected to? I was going to do that but then read that you’re not supposed to connect different gauge wires because its a major fire hazard? Im so confused and frustrated trying to do my build.

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 2 lety

      You can always have a larger gauge before the 12v appliance's wire. Wire gauge sizes as they get larger (smaller in number) can allow more current to flow through them. A Maxxfan has a smaller wire that you connect to, going back to your fuse panel you want wire sized for the amps going through it at the distance of the run. This Blue Sea Systems chart is very helpful in that regard~ assets.bluesea.com/files/resources/newsletter/images/DC_wire_selection_chartlg.jpg
      The danger in different size wires would be if you ran a 22 gauge wire from your fuse panel to the 12 gauge wire coming off of your water pump. A Shurflo water pump should be fused with a 10 amp fuse. A fire could start trying to flow 10 amps through the 22 awg wire back to your water pump.
      Hopefully that helps! Let me know if you have other questions 🙌🏻

  • @muttless
    @muttless Před 2 lety +1

    So with the Goal Zero battery do you not have to worry about putting a voltage regulator on the MaxxAire fan? I've seen a lot of diy van folks complain that the board in the fans has been ruined by >12 v coming in. If you don't have to worry about that while hooked up to your little battery, what about shore power?

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 2 lety

      The new X line has regulated 12v so you don't have to worry about it any longer. We now have the 3000x and have never had issues. Luckily we never had an issue with a fried chip or the green light of death in our Maxxfan previously. We did have it shut down randomly when solar charging kicked in at times.

    Hi Matt, been following along on your build.Thanks for putting out such awesome content. Question, I'm currently in the process of a similar build except using a Yetti 3000x. I'm kinda stumped on how I should wire the rooftop AC unit and could use some advice. The Yetti doesn't have continuous pass through electricity, so if I plug the AC unit directly to the Yetti inverter it will drain the lithium battery within 2 hours. The second issue is that when plugged into shore power using a 15a outlet, I doubt I'll be able to run the 14a AC unit plus the Yetti 3000x without tripping the house breaker. Any ideas on what would be the best solution? Thanks in advance

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for following along and I'm glad they can be helpful! We opted to forgo an AC unit and only have two Maxxfans. I didn't research enough to give you a confident answer utilizing the Goal Zero but maybe their tech support could be helpful to speak about pass through capabilities. Depending on the unit, startup would be my main worry. My first thought it most AC units expect you have a 30amp shore power hookup like an RV. If it's as easy as plugging in the AC to a 30amp plug, I would suggest you have an input for it to run the AC directly while the Goal Zero is there for everthing else you are powering. Two shore power hookups may not be ideal but setting up a single 30amp hookup to power both may be possible. Again, I haven't researched it enough to give you a complete answer. We went with a 15amp plug because Goal Zero has standard wall chargers for fast charging of the units and a 30amp wasn't needed for anything else we have in our van.
      I hope that can be helpful, let me know if you want to bounce any other ideas around it 🙌🏻

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Jason. I bought the cable because I planned to upgrade to a lithium system but I still haven't yet. The AGM has a max output of 10amps or 120 watts from ALL 12v outputs combined so the max current cable doesn't do what it is intended to do. The lithium stations can output 10amps from each 12v output (the new x models have a large output from the Anderson connector which makes the cable unnecessary too). We are definitely near maxing out the 400 right now and have to be mindful of our draws but knowing the shortfalls and being careful, it is still a great system to get you by. I cut off the female plug on an extension cord and wired the wires directly into a 15 amp outlet. Starting at 3 min 58 seconds in this video~ czcams.com/video/Hls4E1Vqwzs/video.html
      It's a pretty simple process. Let me know if you have other questions

    Thank you for the video just a couple of questions the 4& 1 that goes into the yeti box what is that called and the cable that connects to the 4&1 into the fuse box? can i purchase on amazon? and lastly what size wire are you going to use for led lights and switches thank you.

      We used 14awg wire for the LEDs, switches, fans, USB, and to run for a water pump in the future.

      The cable is called the Max Current Cable sold by Goal Zero. I didn't find it on Amazon. What Goal Zero system would you use? As I talk about in the episode, it is meant for the lithium 1000 and up. Here's the Goal Zero link. You could maybe find it on another website too

      I used this 10g wire connector to go from the Max Current Cable to the Fuse Box

    How much wire did you end up using to wire the van?

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 3 lety +1

      I first bought a 100 feet. Then bought a 250 foot spool because the 100 was backorder for a month🙄. I have a lot left over. I'm not sure the exact footage I used but I think I could have got away with 200 feet. The runs that took the most were the LED puck lights since they have two switches and had to run across the van. I did my best to minimize distances

    Matt. What type of connector did you put on your positive/negative wires from your fuse box that connects to the goal zero 12V max current cable?

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 3 lety

      Sorry I must have missed posting it in the description. I used this connection I found on Amazon. You could maybe make one for cheaper if you already have the tools and wire but I opted for a pre-made one. Buying items separately seemed to be just as expensive

      It’s strange though when you click on the 12v max current item on the goal zero sight, it says not compatible w yeti x. Would you know the answer why?

    • @ChristopherKueber
      @ChristopherKueber Před 3 lety +1

      I guess this is the answer to that question.
      The 12v Max Current Cable is no longer needed with the Yeti 3000x (or 1000x, 1500x, and 6000x) as it has a regulated 30 amp power pole output port for this type of application. This port is located both on the front of the Yeti and under the lid, but only one port will provide a full 30 amps at once.

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 3 lety

      It's a big bummer. They've had firmware issues with the fast charger and link modules too. I purchased all those things already because we knew we'd upgrade to the 3000x. Hopefully they figure out their capability issues.
      I'm guessing the cord is because the new updated output max on the x models is higher than before and it could max out at higher amps than the cord is rated for? I'd think it would still be able to be utilized though. I could be wrong and might be a worthwhile question for Goal Zero. It sounds like they are in over their heads with all the unforseen issues with their x line sadly.

    Did you use both one inch and half inch wiring loom?

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 3 lety

      Yes I did. Mostly I used one inch where there were multiple strands and the half inch with only a couple. I covered nearly all my wire throughout the van

      @@Trailvagabonds How much loom did you use? I'm working with my sprinter 144" length. Trying to figure out how much loom and wire to purchase. do you also have any recommendations on a connector kit that has both male/female? the link you provided has large qty and feel like i'd have a ton of leftovers. thoughts?

    • @Trailvagabonds
      @Trailvagabonds  Před 3 lety

      I think I purchased 3 x 20' - 1 inch and a couple 1/2" loom rolls. It really depends how many runs you have together. How much you want to cover every wire. How many appliances you have. Etc. For the connectors my suggestion would be to buy quality ones, good reviewed, and hear shrink ends. I've heard horror stories of melting connections from some of the cheap kits on Amazon. Going to a local hardware store like Ace or an auto parts store like Auto Zone could get you 12 or 24 packs of different connectors usually with waterproof heat shrink ends. The auto stores have some kits too that may be good for the elements.
      If you want to chat more about it, send us an email and I could maybe try to pull some items off Amazon if it could be helpful

      For 2 fans should i run 2 separate wires to the fuse panel or daisy chain them together?

    • @Trailvagabonds

      I think two separate wires is best so that you can properly fuse each fan and not have to worry about a larger current running through the lead wire.

      I called American Technology Comp because I originally bought a switch to pair with the dimmer that didn't work. They ended up making me a custom 2 switch panel and total it was $16 per switch. It might be easiest to call them to have them made?
