I give you enormous credit for being patient to resolve this major malfunction by De Walt. DeWalt is a great brand and they shouldn't allow this to happen in the first place.
Planed one side of about 90 old fence planks tonight and when I went to do the other side of the planks, my planer started skipping similar to this video. The cutter head was jumping a bit too. There aren’t too many videos about this model out there, so I came across yours pretty quick and very much appreciate it. I ordered some new bushings without even having a look at my old ones, ‘cause I’m sure this is the same problem I’m facing. Fingers crossed and much appreciated!
I just finished pulling my inherited planer apart (same model) and your video was very helpful. My problem is a broken housing and I can still order this. The bearing you replaced are Babbitt bearings invented many years ago and still used today. They are designed as a sacrificial material and can actually be melted and recast. I believe Fine Woodworking had an article on these many years ago.
I had the same problem. I used a Bosch 12 volt Impact driver with an excellent phillips bit to break the screws loose and saved needing an easy out. My bushings looked like yours. My chain also had a couple of stiff links. Replaced the bushings and chains and all is well.
I just took apart my DW733 and ran into the exact same problem with the roller screws stripping/breaking. After going through 2 screws I decided to heat up the following screws with a hot air gun, the remaining screws came out perfectly. They are lock tited in so use heat
Thanks a bunch! Watching your video and seeing how easy it is to get the sprockets. I purchased this model for $60 cuz the guy busted the sprocket. Ordered the sprocket and should be fixed!
I have one of those 733's and have used it very little. I think I will take it apart and grease and oil everything. Too bad you didn't find the bad bearing first. Great informative video.
I was having a similar issue, maybe not exactly the same but all I did was lube the chain and bushings (shaft???). I lubed everything. Now it seems good. Even if you're not having issues like this it might be wise to just lube everything up every now and then.
I have the same issue with my DW733. I found the problem to be that the bushings on the roller are worn out and need to be replaced. It seems logical as I have owned this planer for 20 years. The bushings are about $3 a piece and you might as well replace all four.
Hello , congratulations for the work, your videos are great . I'm from Brazil and my is not very good English and I did not where to buy the dowels could tell me the site , thank you
Hello, thanks for the video. I just bought this very unit used and found its missing the adjustment chain. I cannot find any documentation on how it is routed with the center shaft that has the two sprockets. There is no chains available online either they are all discontinued so I plan to buy a whole length of chain locally and make my own. Can you supply me a pic of the bottom under the cover (if you have it) of the chain? Thanks.
Sorry for taking so long. I do not have a picture or diagram of how the adjustment chain is routed. My planer is bolted to the stand anf not so easy to undo and get to it to take a photo. You should be able to figure it out though.
Could you please send me the website you mention in the conclusion where you got the parts from - I'm having the same issues with my 733. Thanks - very informative videos. Thanks again for the detail. Look forward to getting the website.
Usually, what looks like a lot of slop is not enough for taking out a link. It will fool you. A lot of machinery that have chain drives have tensioners on them for this reason.
Just in case there may be someone as dumb as me looking around for a feeding issue. While changing the blades once , I accidentally installed one of the three upside down and this caused the planer not to feed properly
NEED HELP Great video, was hoping this would be my problem as well. I have a DW733 with very little use. The problem of the stuttering as seen in the video is the same. Leaves rollers marks and a small indentation from the blades. So after a DIY with no solution, I brought it to an authorized Dewalt service center and they have replaced, rollers, bushings, drive chains and bed. The problem of stuttering is STILL there. Hoping someone out there might have an ANSWER. Thanks
Thank you for responding. Have been back 3 times and they tell me that they have replaced all the parts that could be causing this issue and not much more can be done..... Attached is a video link for your viewing, maybe you can see something they are not As a note the stuttering is random and also leaves a small blade indent, almost the same size as the roller burn czcams.com/video/XIdXttkgess/video.html
Drive Chain Part Number: 285960-00 is designed for use with planers. The purpose of this item is to drive the roller. Over time chain will stretch and would need to be replaced. It is made out of metal and it is sold individually. You would need a screwdriver and snap-ring pliers to complete this repair. www.ereplacementparts.com/drive-chain-p-68074.html
Why do you think the tool was designed w/o a tensioner if one was necessary? Note the direction of the chain - it is tight as it pulls the driven gear (top) and lose as it feeds the chain back to the driven gear. Sometimes you want to find the problem before you go about fixing things that are not broke!

The bushings are easy to find and cost little, I did this job on a Saturday morning. It works perfectly now.
That's good! Thanks for watching.

You're an incredible craftsman and mechanic. I probably would have tried to flip the block
Thanks! I think I thought about that after I got the new blocks.
I just took apart my DW733 and ran into the exact same problem with the roller screws stripping/breaking. After going through 2 screws I decided to heat up the following screws with a hot air gun, the remaining screws came out perfectly. They are lock tited in so use heat
Good to know, thanks!

He never took it apart. Just turned it on and the sprocket busted and turned it back off and sold it

Great informative video.
I have the same issue on this planer. Thank you.
Great info. Thanks

Picked up a used one, thanks for the video. i got a pretty good idea now what wear parts to check and replace.
Thanks, best wishes!
I actually just bought one of these models yesterday used on clist for $100...in good cond...seems like a pretty good deal...

@@MyRobertadams thanks for the response. I think I have it routed the only way it can go. I'm missing the cover but don't feel it's necessary.
Very interesting thanks if I have the same problem with my 733 I'll know what the cause of the problem is and solution.

Is it not easier to just get a few master links and shorten up the chain a link or two?
Usually, what looks like a lot of slop is not enough for taking out a link. It will fool you. A lot of machinery that have chain drives have tensioners on them for this reason.
Mine does the same thing but my bushing are good. I'm really confused. Cane some one please help me!
Thanks!!!!!
I ordered two new chains and installed. Still no better ?
Clean the rollers

Thank you again for your response. I do know the replaced both of the rollers, front and back. As for the depth of cut I will try to make it deeper.
Ok thanks

Just watched it. Great video; you made it really easy to see what was going on. Thanks!
Couldn’t get a new set of chains?
I did.
I/2 link would be ideal.
Damn cant belive those parts were so cheapmfrom dewalt...seems odd typically they charge arm and leg
Remove a link from the chain
En español please
You should get a 3d printer that would have been really easy to make with a 3d printer
Obviously you have NO clue what a 3D printer actually does
A new set of chains ,sprockets and bushings dont cost much, just saying. All parts avalible.
I did replace the bushings and chains, just not the sprockets.
I now see it..that bushing blck is bad...better off using an insert inside of a block..easier to replace...poor design
How much money have you received in yountube revenues?

You should just call dewalt and have them fix the issue...it is a design flaw....why are you redesigning the machine...thats dewalts job
Bushings/garbage. The price of these machines, you'd think they could use a few bearing, problem solved.
I agree totally.
