I never understood why people sacrifice range of motion, which is the most important thing in building muscle, for heavy weights with no range of motion which basically doesnt even work your muscles at all

Because they just want to be able to claim to have done the exercise with those heavy weights. I think another big psychological aspect of it is the fact that in many ways, most people don't truly comprehend the fact that working hard and correctly at something actually makes you better at it over time-- they subconsciously don't trust the process so they just try to scrape by with whatever they are capable of at the time. If they try to do something and it seems too difficult, then their intuition tells them that they are simply not capable of it, rather than accepting temporary failure and being able to go back to the fundamentals and work on them to improve.
When people with that mindset try to lift something that is too heavy, instead of changing to a smaller weight and lifting it correctly to build their strength in the long run, they just try to adjust how they lift it and sacrifice proper angles and range of motion until it feels easy enough for them to do it as is; they don't see it as sacrificing any gains/progress, because they have a sort of mental blockage that prevents them from expecting those improvements to happen either way, and from being able to even imagine lifting such a heavy weight with proper form.
There is place for doing half reps, quarter reps, etc., when done correctly it can definitely be good for strength and even hypertrophy. But this was just ego lifting.
I do 10 full pull ups, my friend do 15 half’s and he is the winner that’s life boys 😊
