- We'll show how jibing across the wind is done by rotating the sail on deck and catching the wind as it comes across from the side of your boat.
This sailing demonstration is done using the WindPaddle "Adventure" sail. - Sport
Used my Windpaddle on a 1254 mile, 66 day trip across Ukraine in 2018. Most days were headwind, especially from Kyiv to Dnipro. Dnipro to the Danube Delta I deployed the Windpaddle most days, often for much of the day. It also made a handy cockpit shelter during rain squalls. I used it today launching off Ao Yon Beach and around Koh Lon at the south end of Phuket Island. Had a great downwind run to the west end of the island and then a long slog back against wind and tide on the south side. Able to reach back to the launch point once I turned the corner at the east end of the island. I use a sling that goes over my shoulder and under one arm with a carabiner to hook the sheet to. Hands free allows use of the paddle for faster speed or bracing. A paddle leash is a wise investment. I set it up with a grommet on one edge as a rain water catchment to replenish my freshwater supply on the Black Sea. In heavier showers it collects a surprising amount of water in a short time. It makes a handy shelter for your gear as you set up camp in the rain..... It's a good thing to have around.
Omg my wife has brought me one for my kayak and paddleboard can not wait to try it out. Its gonna be so much fun.
Brilliant video and review of it.
You just made it more exciting for me when I get out on the water.
I'm from cornwall uk. I started kayaking a year ago when me and the wife moved here and this will be Brilliant on windy days
This is really cool guys! One of the main things our kayak anglers use our app for is looking at our wind forecasts as they map their trips before recording them. What a cool tool you guys have created to make use of the wind!
A superb video! Great "on water" demonstration with explanation and showing the techniques used. Thank you for posting.
Today I learned where the word "tell tail" came from. Thank you.
Awesome! I'm gonna train my dog to hold it up and veer left or right or 'lie down' on the sail. Looks like so much fun! Would be really helpful if you have to paddle against the current, but can use the wind to assist.
Excellent Demo!
That Spinnaker sail is awesome.
Very smart, simple and effective made me smile.
You are right there! We own both a laser and a 5o5 dingy, which really haul the mail! We'll have a video up showing a kayak sailing at 10 knots using the WindPaddle, not as fast as a laser, but fast!
Expandacraft has outrigger kits so you can add a larger upwind sail to your kayak.
I think this is fantastic.
I got one but have yet to use it. After watching this I think I can do it.
We aren't, but thanks for writing and watching our videos. Stay tuned for a few new ones showing perhaps the speed you are looking for..
Looks like the gorge and highway 14. And bridge of the gods!
Dan, There is shipping from the USA, and customs which increase cost, but this fall our new WindPaddle "Scout" sail will debut in the UK for under £100 pounds UK! Stay tuned for more here, and thanks for writing. - Nick
Yes, to those asking, it can be used on inflatable canoes!
WindPaddle haha you read my mind
Thank you! Yes that was what I was wondering!!
Nice one and thanks for the video, am going to try out on my local canals first (Birmingham UK) then the Norfolk Broads and rivers next week, cant wait!!
Omg that’s awesome!
it works but you need a foot steered rudder for maximum speed..
tenho 2 kaiaks mistral, gostei muito da idéia e gostaria de adquirir uma vela dessa;como faser pra comprar?
Just curious where this video was filmed? Looks like a nice place, kinda like Canada.
Wow, what a great idea. This is ideal for anyone who kayaks in notoriously windy places. For me that would be the eastern end of Long Island NY, as well as the OBX of NC. Great places to kayak , but always windy. Where can one purchase?

secret journey,
I’m looking to buy a kayak and use this sail on it. I live on Long Island, NY. Do you have any suggestions for a good, relatively fast sit-on kayak?
"Looks like fun"
Where do you place the keel? Taking into account that the sail is located so far forward (spinnaker) do you place the keel in the center of the kayak or more forward, three quarters of the length, bringing it closer to the bow?
We think sailing is a sub-set of playing, so we totally agree! We'd also be willing to enter a race, with you standing up in your kayak, and us or anyone using a WindPaddle sail. Let us know if you're at all serious in our offer. :)
Genius
I'd like to put one on the front of my aluminum fishing boat. Could use it for trolling.
SO you can only sail downwind with this? Then what's the difference with a plain old paper bag?
I have a body board wider then that i must attach it to it and see what happens
I need one of these for my recumbent tadpole trike. LOL
can i use it for bestway voyager 500 boat?
How fast does it go
cool... how much?
You are right, we should spend some money on actors, actresses and a real script. Email us if you change your mind and would like to demo a sail. -Nick
This is a stretch on the word "sail". it's more like a collapsible spinnaker. a sail/sheet produces forward movement by design. perpendicular to the travel of the vessel. (like an air plane wing, but vertical not horizontal. would a mast and collapsible sail be more efficient? I do like the sail clear view deal though.
so it's a sail then just for reaching down wind.
Are you moving forward here it's hard to tell
Im going to attach a keel on my sit on top...maybe I can tack upwind..any suggestions
I'd go with the Adventure sail for best up-wind performance, as the sail is cut flatter and will allow you to take advantage of your boat keel modification. Thanks for your interest~!
simple but effective...think the entire sail experience needs to be reinvented...noticed the speed record was with a sail set parallel to the hull...
+John Rogan - You are right. Look at skis too! There are really no "rules", other than it needs to work and you need to enjoy doing it! Thanks John.
thank god we still have innovators to combat the dullards like Dr, Michael Savage.
+John Rogan - We agree! Who said there are "rules" to things we normally take for granted. Thanks for the comment.
You are letting the wind push the sail from all 360 degrees....the rudder does the steering....sort of the same principle as flying a kite.......very clever!
Thanks!!!
Can the sail be attached to the back of the kayak for heading directly into the wind?
No, but in that wind it would make for a fast backwards ride!
We should do with our fishing umbrellas
Correction on speed. 5-6 knots is 5.8-6.9 mph, knots X 1.15=mph.
Can this sail be used on a sit-on-top kayak too?
Yes it can. Simply clip the sail forward where your foot rests are!
I hope it can be used on inflatable canoes because I have bought a windpaddle sail and have a two man inflatable canoe from trago mills and I hope that I have done the right thing
I don't like being a negative Nancy, but how many yakers are sailors too? I have one and it's ridiculous to try do anything other then down wind. I simple lateen sail can get you many more point s in the wind and there's no goofy folding. But I must say it beats paddleing have the trip.
I wonder if I could get up river without paddling against the current with this
Hey 👋 it's a pleasure to meet you here and sorry to ask you are those hair of yours natural?🌹🌹🌹
Can we use this in dinghies (inflatable boats)? If yes, then does it unbalance the boat? Would that be secure to use it in a 290cm wooden floor inflatable boat?
+Alex de Souza , Yes we have used the larger "Cruiser" sail on a 9 foot rubber dinghy and it sailed or moved the boat really well! Thanks for asking.
+Nick Wiltz
Thanks for the answer. I was also a bit worried about the balance of the boat as there is no keep under. Hope a strong side wind wont unbalance the boat.
+Alex de Souza Send me an email at nick@windpaddle.com and I'll send you some pictures of it on inflatable boats if you like.
..Hello!
Does this sailing system
work to all directiosn winds and for all directions cannoeing or only one way?
And how it cost?
Thanks
+dr Yiannis VRYZAS, lawyer & composer / δρ Γιάννης ΒΡΥΖΑΣ, δικηγόρος & συνθέτης You can sail across and down wind with the WindPaddle. Thanks for asking.
Thanks. But what "across and down" means?
dr Yiannis VRYZAS, lawyer & composer / δρ Γιάννης ΒΡΥΖΑΣ, δικηγόρος & συνθέτης From my sailing experience, without a centerboard (which kayaks do not have) you will not be able to go higher than 90° off the wind. I would imagine that with a sail like this, you would not be able to actually travel more than 120° off the wind. He may be able to "point" to 90 degrees, but he is sliding downwind. In sailing, we call this VMG or velocity made good. Having a kayak with a skeg would significantly improve performance of the sail.
How are you steering the kayak? Do you have a rudder system on it?
The kayak does not need to have a rudder system as it can be steered using the paddle
Thanks for the demo but I think the V sail will be a better choice.I hope you didn't pay too much for it.
Left is the port side.
so you can sail down wind or across wind but not upwind, is that right? doesn't that mean you are basically setting yourself up for a long hard paddle back to your point of departure?
Paddle upwind first, always fun, and then have a rest on the way back.
No. It means you should paddle up wind to your destination and sail home or sail downwind to your destination and paddle home. It’s not rocket science
I swear every day I take my yak out fishing I paddle against the wind, and it switches so I paddle against it on the way back!
Do you think it can work on my rudderless sea kayak? Using the paddle as a rudder perhaps? I am a good sailor, skipper and laser owner for 30 years
I have a rudderless kayak and i use the paddle to steer. Easy and great fun
I have used an umbrella, fwiw ... ;)
Thanks... an umbrella is probably more fit for purpose !
Me too...more control over sail angle and easier/safer to depower it, and use it more vertically in a depowered state..I use a high quality golf umbrella.
I’ve used an umbrella a couple times. Learned to paddle hard when the wind picks up or it goes inside out fast 😜
Where do I buy? I need two
20 u at ebay
Be careful, there are some very cheap and inferior copies being sold out there. They break, are stiff and just don't work. Don't be fooled by the price of these knock-offs made in China. Read the reviews!
Can’t we use an umbrella? Wouldn’t that be easier to steer and fold
An umbrella works fine as well, particularly a golf umbrella in light wind.
too fast for me
Wondering if ill work on a bicycle🤔
It may take
どなたか、この外周のカ-ボン支柱を売ってる処を知りませんか?(カ-ボン支柱太さ4mm長さ3.5m)折れちゃって修理に困っています>_<
Such a shame you can't tack upwind
I used one once with a row boat. The wind wasn't this convenient constant thing; it kept stopping, which causes the sail to continually fall down. When THE SAIL FALLS IN THE WATER it scoops up enormous amounts of water in it, so when you pull it out of the water it naturally pours all that water into the boat. DISASTER. NEVER AGAIN!
get a friend with you, then put lights on your eyeball sail and kayaks and you my friend will look like a friggin monster coming out of the deep!
you are using essentially a spinnaker to sail correct? I'm new to sailing but, a rounded cup maybe I should watch the rest of the video when you explain going up wind, where as a kayaker is more important. Paddling back to your vehicle is much more important, this seems like one-way transportation at high speed. why?
No problem! Paddle upwind first and just let the wind push you all the way back. Simple.
Why not just use a windproof umbrella lol?
Mark Andrews the clear kind
Plastic bag?
You would have gone faster on a Laser or a Sunfish
Can't you find a textile that is quiet? That rustling is annoying!
don't go sailing mate
use a surf kite,
If you stand upright in your kayak at such windspeed, you'll probably go just as fast without the windpaddle.
This is not sailing. it's playing...
You can sail off the wind with the WindPaddle, but not into it, unless your kayak has a rudder and lee-boards, which most kayaks don't. If you did ANY research at all, you would know more than a 4 year old and thus the difference from a plain old (or new) paper bag and a sail. Although some plain old paper bags have handles which would be handy to hold onto. We're amused at your comments.
when you reply to a comment don't insult them in it
That's a great downwind sail. If you want to sail upwind, you'll need a rudder and leeboard for inflatable kayak like this czcams.com/video/2vKA_AkdYEQ/video.html
this can going only up wind
Idiot
You probably mean 'down' wind. Yes you are right.
As an sailor, thats the slowest and smallest thing ive ever seen. But i dont know anything about kayaking, so dont take my words too serious
"An" is used before a vowel to replace "a". Like "an electric shock". You are a* sailor.
Great demonstration. Gives me confidence in deploy and use but a completely inaccurate when talking about beam reach! Insane without rudder and dagger board. The guy can't have ever sailed boats of any kind! Down wind or cheat a broad reach with extreme side slip is fine. But beam reach is complete bullshit. Teaching people this could get someone killed.
Why can I say this: I've been sailing dinghy since I was 6.
if it is that windy you should not be in a kayak? also the green tails show you nothing in the position they are in... false wind in front of the sail...if anything they should be in front of the bubble like in an airplane... just look at the waves dude. that will tell you wind direction...
its too small
Why is the sail so big? You could easily get overpowered and capsize!
This whole video looks like you're guessing. Maybe you should have practiced before posting a video on how to use it.
I doubt seriously that you are supposed to be holding the strings. What happens if you need to paddle or steer without a rudder?
I had one of these. You hook the cord behind your knees, you can then use the paddle to correct direction or paddle.
I guess it’s good for weaklings who don’t like to row😂just kidding. It looks like fun.
Very noisy
Haha tacking and luft why you using these terms. I sail on a real sail boat and when someone uses terms like that I say shut up this is not the fucking ocean
I bought one of these once and I have to say it was a waste of money. Holding the rope up with your hand is the only way it will work when you’re sailing. It gets tiring very quickly and is not worth it. The chance of a capsize is greatly increased when you’re not holding a paddle. Please don’t waste your money buying this.
Dude . Buy a sailboat
As a perspective customer I have to say that was the worst product demonstration I have ever seen. Your video has certainly showed me everything I need to make a decision to NOT buy this product.
