  • We'll show how jibing across the wind is done by rotating the sail on deck and catching the wind as it comes across from the side of your boat.
    This sailing demonstration is done using the WindPaddle "Adventure" sail.

    Used my Windpaddle on a 1254 mile, 66 day trip across Ukraine in 2018. Most days were headwind, especially from Kyiv to Dnipro. Dnipro to the Danube Delta I deployed the Windpaddle most days, often for much of the day. It also made a handy cockpit shelter during rain squalls. I used it today launching off Ao Yon Beach and around Koh Lon at the south end of Phuket Island. Had a great downwind run to the west end of the island and then a long slog back against wind and tide on the south side. Able to reach back to the launch point once I turned the corner at the east end of the island. I use a sling that goes over my shoulder and under one arm with a carabiner to hook the sheet to. Hands free allows use of the paddle for faster speed or bracing. A paddle leash is a wise investment. I set it up with a grommet on one edge as a rain water catchment to replenish my freshwater supply on the Black Sea. In heavier showers it collects a surprising amount of water in a short time. It makes a handy shelter for your gear as you set up camp in the rain..... It's a good thing to have around.

    This is a stretch on the word "sail". it's more like a collapsible spinnaker. a sail/sheet produces forward movement by design. perpendicular to the travel of the vessel. (like an air plane wing, but vertical not horizontal. would a mast and collapsible sail be more efficient? I do like the sail clear view deal though.

      @henrymerrilees9066 Před 7 lety +2

      dr Yiannis VRYZAS, lawyer & composer / δρ Γιάννης ΒΡΥΖΑΣ, δικηγόρος & συνθέτης From my sailing experience, without a centerboard (which kayaks do not have) you will not be able to go higher than 90° off the wind. I would imagine that with a sail like this, you would not be able to actually travel more than 120° off the wind. He may be able to "point" to 90 degrees, but he is sliding downwind. In sailing, we call this VMG or velocity made good. Having a kayak with a skeg would significantly improve performance of the sail.

    I used one once with a row boat. The wind wasn't this convenient constant thing; it kept stopping, which causes the sail to continually fall down. When THE SAIL FALLS IN THE WATER it scoops up enormous amounts of water in it, so when you pull it out of the water it naturally pours all that water into the boat. DISASTER. NEVER AGAIN!

    You can sail off the wind with the WindPaddle, but not into it, unless your kayak has a rudder and lee-boards, which most kayaks don't. If you did ANY research at all, you would know more than a 4 year old and thus the difference from a plain old (or new) paper bag and a sail. Although some plain old paper bags have handles which would be handy to hold onto. We're amused at your comments.
