    Loving these videos! Only one fix, Baldwin IV was actually not 30 when he became heir apparent. He was actually a teenager, and had a couple years of regency with Raymond III of Tripoli before becoming king. He ultimately died at age 24 of leprosy.

      Especially in a disadvantagious position, but considering the politics at the time it would have just buyed the Crusader States some time before before they would have been pushed back as the Fatimids is a very divided state, which their main enemy would take advantage of.

    I'm surprised you didn't group this with the Third Crusade. I tend to start the Third Crusade with Salah-Al-Din's rise to power, not with the official call for the Third Crusade after he recaptured Jerusalem.

    • @quillinkhistory9539
      @quillinkhistory9539  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Kevin!
      There are two main reasons to why that's the case in this video. The first reason is that I'm trying to tie on the different parts in the Kingdom of Jerusalem series to specific keywords that I think they can rank and draw traffic from. That is the main reason why this video is called "battle of Hattin and the Fall of Jerusalem" despite the battle of Hattin not coming up until in the second half of the video. That way every video can get more search traffic by getting traffic both from search as well as from each other. The second reason is that the way Im structuring the series is to a large extent based upon Thomas Maddens book "The Concise History of the Crusades" which ends one of its chapters with the fall of Jerusalem and then starts the following one with covering the thirds crusade. :)

      @@quillinkhistory9539 Interesting points. But I also need to point out a small flaw in your video, something that you don’t talk about in your narration, but actually happens on-screen. On-screen, shortly after Raymond makes his breakout from the Muslim forces and Guy orders the remaining forces to head for the Horns Of Hattin, it shows Balian of Ibelin breaking out through the Muslim line and escaping, yet you don’t mention that in your narration. I find myself a little shocked at that because Balian also managed to rally his remaining forces and led a mass breakout through the Saracen line, and his breakout was even BIGGER than Raymond’s. According to the sources, he didn’t have a huge number of knights left with him when he broke through, but he managed to save something like 3,000 of the Christian infantry.

      @quillinkhistory9539  Před 4 lety +2

      @@kevinnorwood8782 Thanks for pointing it out. The reason I'm not mentioning it is due to the video being around 20 min which takes a long time to both write, record as well as edit. Because of that I tried to wrap up as quickly as possible after I had covered the battle of Hattin.

  • @MrFarnanonical
    @MrFarnanonical Před 3 lety

    15:13 you're wrong about that. The caravans were armed and they were sent through Reynalds territory. The point was to goad the Crusaders into breaching the peace.

    • @Lion_Hamza
      @Lion_Hamza Před 3 lety

      Sources for your claims? And if Saladin wanted to attack, he would have done so, without using dirty tricks. The Christians attacked the caravan well knowing Saladin will retaliate. They expected to win. They believed the holy cross makes them invincible. Saladin was clever like a desert fox and used all tricks in the book to defeat the crusaders.

    • @forickgrimaldus8301
      @forickgrimaldus8301 Před 2 lety

      @@Lion_Hamza also by this point the Crusader States are surrounded on all sides, gone were the days where they nearly controlled Alexandria so they probably figured that if they don't attack Saladin and his allies would do it 1st as Saladin really wanted the Crusader States neutralized maybe not fully conquered as that would result in a Crusade which did happen.
      While religion probably played a part so does everyone in this time period Muslim and Christian.

    • @forickgrimaldus8301
      @forickgrimaldus8301 Před 2 lety

      Also just because those caravan have arms doesn't mean it was a trick as thats like saying it would be suspisious why there are guards in a bank.
      Also this is the Medieval period so a valid reason isn't really needed, you can just say anything in this time and so war it is.
