  • The Fabulous Thunderbirds perform "Wrap It Up" live at the Farm Aid concert in Austin, Texas on July 4, 1986. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.

Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?

Why didn't we hear about them when this song was made. I first heard about them maybe a year or so back. I can listen to this song over and over and over and never get tired of it.

Everyone heard about them, they were very popular. They didn't write this song. It's a Sam & Dave tune from the 60's, written by Porter and Hayes.

Because we were too young to be aware of it? Everybody was listening to alternative rock when I was in my 20s.

Jimmie was famous first, and was known as the hottest guitarist in Texas when Stevie Ray was coming up. The T-Birds made some highly regarded blues albums in the early 80s, but it all seemed very low-budget. When Stevie Ray broke it open, a major label and major producer (dave edmunds) took a flyer. This and TUFF ENUFF were big hits in the mid 80s. SO was POWERFUL STUFF from the Cocktail soundtrck.

There is no hipper band than the T Birds, especially the first lineup.

Actually, a classic written by Hayes and Porter, and first sung by Sam and Dave.

This was actually Farm Aid II, or the second year of Farm Aid. Was held at a horsetrack outside of Austin called Manor Downs. Brother Stevie performed at this one as well.

Kim Wilson (during this time) had a hard to determine sex appeal. It vascillated between "Hell Yea" and "No Way". His macho bravado onstage was alluring and having seen him for years before TBirds went national I saw him get bous cous women at Antones. I can tell you definitely that he looked better on stage from the audience than standing next to him. Still, the pencil moustache and shades and poof of chest hair at the top of his shirt is what sexy is all about. I don't know. It'd be easier if he was Tom Selleck or something. Personality wise he was more charming than most people from California. Oh before I forget; he looks like a frog now. I'm only talking about then.

Wow. Not sure it makes sense responding to a post from 6 yrs ago but I will give it a try. I have always found Kim Wilson very alluring. I agree with you about that. Seen him at least 4 or 5 times in San Diego, Hampton Virginia, Florida. The one time I met him he was very gracious and patient as I was a nervous fan and he autographed my CD. I found him completely charming and love the way he moved onstage in 1980s, 90s and early 2000s. So smooth, so sexy. I appreciate your take on your experience in Texas. I wish I had been there!
