Through my first year of fat bike ownership, and I have discovered a few pieces of gear that I think are essential for fat biking...at least where I live. This list probably differs depending on your location and how you use your fat bike, but this is the stuff I found I really needed as I got deeper into fat bike ownership.

    I'm adding a 30 tooth chainring and a 13/34 freewheel.
Sort of changing it from a strength exercise, to a cardio exercise.
Lots of long rolling hills around here.
It's not a commuter, it's a cruiser and I also added cruiser handlebars.
I've never seen another fat bike here in North Central Florida.

Spin to win! I see them on the coasts but I guess away the beach they’re less common.

I agree with all of these essentials. They help me survive fat biking in Minnesota.

I've made a couple of winter trips to MPLS. Brrr. Can't imagine biking in those conditions. Surviving sounds about right. LOL. My summer rides there were amazing. Such a bike friendly city.

Good list!! I have used Stans for quite some time and it has been great. For the winter I also do a good, lightweight pair of North Face boots that are warm, dry, and work well for the hike a bike. Keep ‘em coming!

    studded tires are nice.

yeah, that was the consensus on another video I did. I've never used them, but I could totally see them being essential, especially if you commute.

Cool video, Lanky. Definitely picking up some Pogies for this winter, and looks like I should probably get you a sticker for that cabinet.
    See you on the trail.

They'll make a huge difference in the winter. Cabinets looking a bit bare hah!

Great video Lanky 👍….. i am running 4.8” tires on my FB and have been good using 4 oz (two fills of that Stan syringe) so for the weight-worry crowd they could potentially save the weight of 4 oz in total 😜….. Once winter comes around i also like switching to Orange Sub Zero and that formulation doesn’t freeze until it gets way colder out than most would ever tolerate …….. Love the PDW mudshovel as well….. check out the one they make for the down tube… it pops on / off very quickly and keeps the front wheel from tossing trail contents all over you as well…

I have the down tube fender but I don’t know what I did with it. Disappeared during winter. Good to know on sealant, thanks Keith!

Lite weight slip motorcycle strap with 2 large hook ends...
It allows us too hook in many spots on the bike incase We need too huff it up a big hill...
There are 1000's of ways to quickly hook up the bike,,, wrap the strap around the body,,, arms,,, over the shoulder,,, pull the tail end of the slip strap to take up the slack or a length that best works for the climb...
And it frees up the hands as We use our body to tug the bike along up the hill...
The big hooks fit on/off fast and away you go once yha put the strap away for the next big climb...
Save the arms and shoulders throughout the day...
    About a 5 to 6 foot strap
    Thumb operated slip clasp
    Large hook ends
1000 ++ ways to quickly hook up around the body and away We go up the mountain...
Easier on the hands,,, wrist,,, elbows,,, shoulder and back...
Once a person gets use too rigging the strap the faster a person will be on those steep hill climbs...
Also boot ice cleats which gives us awesome traction walking the bike up the icey mountain shoots...
Use the brakes to hold bike in place/ step forward and repeat...
It doesn't take long to acend 800 too 1200 ft rizes...
    Good times for sure...

Pogies are not needed unless it is really cold(less than 15 degrees Fahrenheit) other wise decent gloves are fine.

Seems like the tubes don't weigh a whole lot more than a pint of that messy goo.
Tubeless might be worth it means that you won't get any flats?

hey do you consider converting your fat into a gravel bar

    • @TheLankyCyclist
      @TheLankyCyclist  Před 3 lety +1

Adding drops? No way. I use a lot on MTB trails where I want a flat bar. Also be too much work for a bike that wouldn’t make the best gravel bike.
