Hey Jessica, it was me who send you that email about the hidden mask option, it makes life so much easier. Also I must say, I have just finished the outdoor canine portrait course and the sh!t hot shots course, this was such a worthwhile investment!
thank you so much to both of you. I was about to give up design for good until I found this lol. I thought I was dreaming when it actually worked so effortlessly!
Thank you, thank you, thank you x
That was a great tutorial and I love your attitude.
Thank you so much! 😊
The tutorials are great but your delivery even better. You always make me smile. It seems you skipped your Yorkshire tea and went straight for the double espresso today lol.
I love that, it was definitely a double espresso day! 🤣 Thank you so much Shirley 🥰
The last update has made it so much better. Just the select subject does a great job on most dogs. Thank you for another great video 😊
Thank you Alan, that's really great feedback 🙏
I've been over here manually switching to "cloud (detailed results)" every time, like a peasant. THANK YOU!
Glad we could help!
That little pop of light is what I've been trying to figure out as I try to emulate your style. I love it! Just that touch makes the whole image look ethereal. THIS is why you have won multiple international awards competing with hundreds or thousands of other fantastic photographers. It's the Jessica McGovern secret formula. ❤THANK YOU for sharing!!❤
Maria! that's so kind of you, thank you so much for those kind words and for the amazing feedback 🥰 It makes such a difference to know the content we put out there is helping people ❤️
YOU'RE A LIFE SAVIOR!! I've been wondering why the masking on recent photoshop updates are weird, turns out it was the image processing setting! Thank you so much ❤
No problem, glad you found this video useful and by the sounds of it it has saved you from a few headaches 🙂
I have 3 Bearded Collies and have always found it difficult to get high quality results. This video is brillant.
That's great to hear, thank you so much Nikki👌
J C i have struggled with a 'million' video and fur and hair masking and this made so much sense. I never knew where to place the damn curson and cross hair and always got that "fracting of color" on the subject. YOU are a gem and thanks @shantisandra.
Thank you so much for that great feedback 🙏 It means a lot to know you're finding the content we put out there so helpful
Thanks so much. After several false starts, your video finally helped me removed distracting backgrounds from my backyard bird photos.
I'm glad you found it useful ☺
I use the Refine Hair and Decontaminate colours options along with this!
Thank you very much
you're welcome - hope you found it helpful!
Jess I changed this setting yesterday and OMG the difference! The mask was perfect. This is a game changer thank you so much!
Yaaas! Awesome news! I will admit I was sceptical at first, but then I tried it out and the results were real!!
Thank you so much Jessica for the helpful and informative tutorial! God bless and good luck!
No worries, glad you found it useful 🙏🏼
You ROCK Jessica!! I used your method to select and mask a hairy man's arm and it worked!! Thank you!!!
Yay! 😊
Hi Jessica! I have absolutely loved your videos. They have helped me so much and my photos are looking better than ever, all thanks to you and your expertise. Thank you for all the helpful videos you create! ❤
Thank you for the kind words Emily and I am glad that the content we release has helped you in your photography journey 🙂
alright here is my like, subscribe, a random emoji and comment for the algorithm. thank you for being fluffy authentic
Awww thanks 😊 And you're welcome 😊
I've noticed the results I've been getting are SO much better using the cloud processing technique! PS has come along way with assisting us with masking intricate fur/hair details over the last couple of years! Love it! Jess, do you use the 'refine hair' button as well? It can give some really great results too.
I find it to be sketchy unless the hair is blonde for some reason so I tend to stick with the refine edge brush and work it manually 🙌
Is there a link for touching up the mask? There was supposed to be a link near the end of the video at the top of the screen but nothing came up. Thanks!
Really enjoying your 5 minute format Jess, I so rarely have time to watch a longer video that my list of things to catch up with is hundreds long, but I can always fit you 5 minute Friday's in. Thanks.
That's such great feedback, thank you 🙏 That's exactly what we were hoping to achieve 👌
You ladies are the BOMB! This has saved me so much time and effort. Can't thank you guys enough for sharing!!!!!😀
Thank you so much for your kind words 😀
thanks!
I'll subscribe to you!
Thank you 😊
Thank you for great videos! They have really helped me progress in my passion for shooting dogs.
I get all the practice I could ask for at a dog rescue I help at.
I wish Lightroom had the cloud way of selecting and doing the fur.
Yeah me too!
Jess, this video is PRICELESS! Thank you sooo very much for sharing :)
I am glad you have found it so useful 🤓
Very helpful... Thanks for sharing...
I'm glad this helped you 😊
First time viewer, very helpful, I am going to explore your sight, you are a very good instructor, thank you

Thank you Jess, can’t wait to try it out.. You know how I love to mask!! 😂🙈 x
🤦♀️ You've got to give it a go 🤣 Let me know how you get on 👌
"so just deal with it" hehehe I freakin love you!
Hahaha, thank you 🙂
Thank you for this video. I will change my settings..
Glad it helped 👏
Great video! I found green screen photography takes too long, so minimising it, and using nature or studio. Thanks for your video! It's awesome!
Thanks Tanya 🙏 it's really great to know this has helped 🥰
Thank you!
No worries 🙂
That's exactly what I needed. You talked a lot. But I can listen to you forever.
Glad this video helped you and provided you with what you needed 🤓
Hi, newbie here. I lost you when you got to the gradient fill. Can you explain how you got there? Thanks
Great job, I really like your fantastic channel. Thanks a lot
That's such great feedback, thank you so much for your kind words 🥰
Hello and thank you for posting this helpful video. I managed to follow untill the part with the gradient fill. How was the gradient fill added to the layers panel please?
Really great video
Thank you 🙂
Hi , newbie here, I lost you on the gradient fill. Can you tell me how you got there? Thanks
Great video.
I love your style, lol.
Liked and subscribed :)
Ahh thank you so much 🙏
Thanks so much for this video. Life saver as it's been driving me crazy, trying to crop the fine lines on a bull dog. Would have thought a dog was a doddle but oh no. them fine hairs are a nightmare.... Until this video! Thanks again and Merry Christmas :)
Thank you so much for your kind feedback Chris 🙏 so great to hear it's helped 👌
Love this tutorial! I'm sure this is a beginner question, but why don't I have the crosshair when I use the refine edge brush tool? I just have a regular arrow -- I can see the brush effect as I use the tool, but it's harder to keep the brush centered on the edge of the object without the crosshair thingie. I'm on PS Beta, if that makes a difference. (EDIT: changing the cursor preferences to Precise didn't fix this)
Hi Jessica, Love your videos, always anxious for Fridays!! I have a question, when I am using the Refine Brush and its with a + to add, instead of adding the hair etc, it removes it, I also when I click on the Refine hair instead of adding it removes the hair? Is there something wrong with my photoshop, or am I doing something wrong?
I have the same problem! One of many that I've had with masking fur. I can't figure out why this is happening, as well.
@@nancym.6514 Ok good I'm not alone!
@@nancym.6514 I had to contact Adobe, I was online for over 3 hours, they kept telling me the brushes work all fine... Still isn't fixed, but he gave me some instructions to go over and in his words WILL FIX the problem... I'll keep you posted, when I go over these instructions.
@@gmonc8912 I'm definitely curious to hear if and how it gets resolved! Thanks so much. Fingers crossed!
Can you invert the mask and then try again? often this is the problem!
hi jess, so thankful for all your help in editing and this video is great! However i have an issue with masking where the refine brush removes the mask instead of adds to it even though its on the +. i have tried everything to fix this inverting the mask etc but nothing works, ive just done a photoshoot and need to edit and want to mask for a colour gradient but im unable to because of this issue, thanks!
Hi Jess! I've been following you for quite some time, but this is my first comment. Firstly, thanks so much for your videos. They've helped me SO much! I have had the absolute worst time when I attempt to mask the fur of my dogs (2 sable GSDs). I've watched your videos, but it's never worked properly for me, and I've just about given up. I currently have 16 Gig / RAM and am waiting (as I type this) for more to arrive, so that I will have 64 Gig. I was thinking that could cause my problem. I do plan on trying to use the server based masking. BUT, for the first time on any video that I've watched, I saw something on yours that is exactly one of the things that happens on mine. When you started the refine mask, as well as when you reach the top of the forehead, you got this area where there were lines in the mask turned almost like a comb - the brush was not a solid red. I thought that was some sort of issue on my computer, so I'll have to admit that I lit up when I saw it happen on yours (I'll assume that you have state of the art equipment. 😃) Do you know why that is happening and if it affects the quality of the mask at all? Thank you again. I always look forward Friday mornings, because I each breakfast as I watch your new video. Have a great day!
Argh YES the jagged edge problem. This first popped up in PS 2021 and it still comes back some times. Most of the time, you can just ignore the teeth and triangles when you are brushing along with the refine edge tool, it often is just the visual of the brush process happening and you are pretty safe.
HOWEVER - there are times when that jagged edge is actually still present even in the mask - always go back and triple check. So far, I've not found a reliable way to fix the jagged edges if they exist in the mask. Check for PS updates first, but often a hand mask with a brush is the only way. I have googled and searched the forums and nobody seems to know so we have to work with it as much as we can 💪
@@ThatPhotographySpot Thanks so much for the response. Appreciate it!
Hi
Hi there! Im not sure if you do this or have made a video on this already but I recently took free photos for my local animal shelter. The background is atrocious in most of my pictures because they had to be taken inside the kennels at the shelter. I wanted the backgrounds removed so it looked like a portrait. Is there anyway to do this on photoshop or lightroom?
Thank you for the video. I feel like I can now do fur! unfortunately after making the mask nothing else would work. I tried a curves layer and a gradient map but it didn't do anything to the picture. I tried other pictures without mask, all fine, went back to the one I had done the fur mask and even deleted the layer but still wouldn't let me do anything. Any ideas why this would be?
Muy regañona pero pasa, bien explicado. ¡Gracias!
Great video, thanks for sharing the updated technique 👍
Thank you Phillip, so pleased you enjoyed the content 🙏
Thank you so much for the amazing video 😍👍 Dogs masking is one of the most annoying part and I must say I am surprised adobe didn't make any ai tool for this. Your video is very useful 👌 but this method doesn't work that good for lower quality images 😮💨
Thank you for the kind words 🙂 and I am glad this video was useful for you 🙂
Thanks for the video! Just updated my PS (wasn’t aware this had come out) and it seems now Lightroom & PS are not talking to each other 😭 when clicking edit in photoshop within Lightroom, it creates a copy but doesn’t actually open it into photoshop. Any ideas? 😭
First thing to try is restart the computer. Second thing to check is are there any updates needed for Lightroom or Camera Raw? Third thing to try it to re-install Lightroom (try all available options before this one though!)
I am failing miserably with this and also the 2020 version. :)) Anyone else having problems? Is it possible my dog's fur (some light grey/brown strands) is the problem or the photo is not sharp enough (I don't think so?). I am following the steps but it just doesn't pick up all the hair. :(
Do people ever take a breath when they're doing CZcams videos? Please, please, please slow it down a bit.
You can slow down the playback speed by using the cog icon. Most people speed me up. People on CZcams talk fast either because they naturally do (like me) or because it helps with viewer retention. Each to their own 🙌
too much talking
