  • These were pretty nice elevators. I do like how they still have those awesome original bells. The call stations vary from Adams to EPCO Inchline-to GAL-and even to some ThyssenKrupp VR on some floors. Strange selection of fixtures for one set of elevators. I have never seen a Macy's with 6 elevators either. Note the phone that fell out.

The fact that there's an entire bank of six elevators leads me to conclude this is a large building.

I remember this bank of elevators from the early 80's when I worked in S.F. for about 4 years. I recall there was one elevator near the six passengers, with a sliding glass door on the landing might have been in the era when elevator operators were common. I don't think it was still in use, perhaps for fright or employee use only.

I think these are Spencer, modernized by Westinghouse, modernized by who knows. These are pretty interesting despite the crap fixtures from the most recent mod. I really like the Selectomatic annunciator and bells.

Those are beautiful!! As for the controller, I'm not sure what's up there but I don't think they're original. From this era, when you went up to 7 and there was another stop at 1, the 1 and 7 buttons would've stayed illuminated until you got to 7... or they might've both stayed on if there was a hall call on 8. Initially, you try to select floors above 1 and it won't take the floor selections because it's going down. That is a Schindler-esque trait. If these were on the original controllers, the buttons would've lit up for the floors above but would've all gone out when you got to LL. The in-car floor selections don't actually clear until the car changes direction and/or they hit the end of the line (top or bottom) on those controllers. So, I don't know what's up there but I don't think they're original... and I love those bells too!!! I used to have two bldgs. within a block of my downtown apartment bldg. with those bells... but they're modded...

These controllers originally were designed to work with those pop-out buttons. I have absolutely no idea but I'd guess this particular set of elevators once had the pop-outs... If you ever get to Los Angeles, the Transamerica/AT&T/SBC (or whatever it's called this week) Tower has a really interesting setup. Somehow, they ended up with these controllers, the 70's Westy buttons, and got an ADA male voice talking mod. It's pretty cool... you can be headed up to 30 and if there are other floors selected, all of the buttons stay illuminated until you get to 30... so they definitely have this style controller even though the building didn't open until 1965... so it COULD (no idea) be the first building to have gotten the "new" Westy buttons...

I've been in a department store that had 12 elevators. 6 on each side of the store. The top 2 floors 6 and 7 even had wooden escalators still in use. Sadly Macy's took it over and shut it down.

    Otis lanterns and bells?

  • @SPS8elevatorsoflakecounty

Some of the elevators in this bank don't run too well. They all vibrate when they level (not sure what causes that. Maybe it's something with the brake, but idk), some do it worse than others. These things haven't really aged well (typical for a Macy's elevator).

Is the vibration when the car ascends or descends on a floor landing? I remember these elevators in the Macy's Square in SF from years ago 1980's. Could be a fault with the brakes, or a fault with the controller as to the slowing/stopping the traction motor and applying the brakes.
