    The key thing to remember is that The Sopranos was the first series to ever feature an anti-hero/villain as the main character. HBO didn't think that it would work, that audiences would reject it. It laid the groundwork for all modern TV programs with morally ambiguous protagonists.

    My only nitpick with this masterpiece of a show was how Melfi ended things so suddenly with Tony. God knows he’s long deserved to have her slams the door in his face but I just felt like Melfi would’ve already considered that possibility with Tony.
    I dunno maybe it’s just me but I’ve always wished they handled it differently lol

    • @BareBandSubscription
      @BareBandSubscription Před 2 lety +5

      I agree. The idea that a professional psychologist wouldn’t consider that her sociopathic patient _might be_ manipulating her, and then to be so sure he is that she very unprofessionally handles their last session and the severance of their relationship, all because of the words of *one* envious colleague, is just ridiculous. I wish that was all handled better.

    • @dinglbarry1275
      @dinglbarry1275 Před 2 lety +7

      I understand not liking the Melfi ending, until you ponder it and try to come up with a better ending... and you simply can't. There's no good way to close out that relationship. The writing cheat would be if you killed her off in some way in the final season, which is probably how I would have written it and used that as some of the reason as to why Tony loses more control (killing Chris and what not), but I recognize it as a cheat because there's no good way to close out that character.

    • @borderlandwerun
      @borderlandwerun Před 2 lety +5

      I didn't like the way Melfi's departure was handled, either, but I think it's kind of brilliant. This series did a lot of things that I disliked, but that was on purpose -- it frequently offed characters I didn't want to die, or had them do things that made me hate them, but that was the point. These characters are not nice people. So even Dr. Melfi, one of the only regular characters who has a solid moral compass, does something horrible by terminating her relationship with Tony right as his son is recovering from a suicide attempt in the hospital. Life very rarely ends with a complete arc the way TV shows do. People leave this Earth, and their lives are unresolved and leave complicated messes. That's life.

      It's because she was being looked down upon by her colleagues and a paper that was written about such a client. She took it to heart and felt she had been had. It was really her peers opinion of it that got to her.

      I think a lot of that is personal disgust that she ever convinced herself that she could change him. She threw away so much of her life, her self-respect, and her moral authority aiding and abetting a monster, and the only thing left to do was ensure she didn't waste a moment further.

  • @liteflightify
    @liteflightify Před 2 lety +51

    My ranking:
    7. 6A- It started off really strong but kinda peters out. While the Vito arc didn’t have the weight it should have because we didn’t know much of anything about him before this season. Still, even my least favorite season of the best show ever is a really good season of TV.
    6. Season 3- It’s a season made up of a lot of great moments. However, it doesn’t really come together to form something that feels unison and special. But it’s a solid transition season.
    5. Season 4- Probably the most low-key yet soapy season. It just has so many great and underrated character moments. While if Carm is your favorite character (like she’s mine) it’s hard to not appreciate this. And ultimately, this is a show that might be about marriage before it’s about anything else.
    4. Season 2- It took some rewatches for me to really see how well-conceived this season is. It has a couple of my least favorite episodes. But it’s still really well crafted. While the final two episodes are about as good of a one-two punch as any show has given.
    3. Season 1- Because it’s the first season, it’s gonna have some creaky moments, trying to find its style and perspective. But it’s still a fantastic debut season, many with moments and episodes remaining some of the show’s very best.
    2. Season 5- Probably the most overtly Shakespearian and tragic season of the show. It’s just thoroughly great.
    1. Season 6B- What a consistently downbeat and suppressive final lap. But it came together almost perfectly. And that cut to black being the final image was a genius move. That could have been gimmick-y and a “copout”, but instead, it perfectly reflects what the show (especially season 6) had been building to thematically. This used to be one of my least favorite seasons. Now, I adore it the most, despite how draining it is.
    The Sopranos for me is still the best TV drama ever. From a characterization, acting, dialogue, theme standpoint, no other show has touched it. It had the balls to grow but also stay true to itself and continue to challenge the audience.

      I go back and forth on whether 5 or 6b as my favourite but ultimately I think 6b is the most perfect season of the show, theres not single average let alone weak episode and it's the most thematically consistent as well, I also think it has Gandolfini's best performances in the whole show, especially the one-two punch of Kennedy and Heidi followed by the Second Coming

    • @masterknife8423
      @masterknife8423 Před rokem

      Good ranking. I would put season 3 at a better position though solely because of Ralph Cifferatto this season was like a loose cannon for him. He clearly had plot armour after Tracy's death but his own death was well earned in the following season. Gloria brings season 3 down a touch as she doesn't really add much imo. Caitlin was a more interesting character than her. I wish we did get more of Livia but it's a shame the actress died

  • @siphillis
    @siphillis Před 2 lety +17

    I actually see 6A and 6B as two distinct seasons, and even Chase himself refers to it as Season 6 & 7. For one, Season 6A ends on a note of closure for Phil Leotardo whereas Season 7 sees him reflect on that decision and change his mind. There's enough time and change between "Kaisha" and "Soprano Home Movies" to easily separate the two storylines.
    As for the best season? I think it's clearly Season 3. The pivot towards darker, richer storylines instead of one-off semi-comedic affairs was a huge risk for the show, and it paid off in spades.

    • @gf4670
      @gf4670 Před 3 dny

      Yeah they only call it 6B because of the contracts -- Hollywood is legally only allowed to sign talent to 6 year contracts so they had to treat those 9 episodes as part of season 6 so they wouldn't have to negotiate new deals and pay way more than they were already paying for production along with backend stuff for the cast that they weren't able to get originally.
      But yeah, 3 is the best. The gimmick with Livia had played out but they were able to serendipitously hit on some great stuff there with Meadow and the moolinyan and then Jackie Jr and Ralph and the stripper and then Gloria and Pine Barrens. It really is the only season IMO that doesn't have an episode that feels like a miss and if you're doing a binge watch you think you can skip over to get to a better episode.

    I first got into the Sopranos during the quarantine in 2020 and just started a rewatch recently (hit season 3 yesterday) and yeah, it’s definitively one of the best series ever put to television. The juxtaposition of everyday life and involvement in the mafia intermingled with themes of mental health issues, wealth disparity, various inevitabilities, and the death of the American Dream all come together really well into a show you just want to binge the hell out of. Since I was watching on HBO Max my first time, when I hit the finale I genuinely thought there was another season after the cut to black. It’s a frustrating choice but an artistically valid and reasonable one so I can’t be mad at it, as confusing as it was at the time. As a nostalgia whore, I’d say seasons 1 and 2 are tied as the favorites for me. There’s just something about seeing these characters at their starting points, especially now knowing where they’ll end up. I just want every scene with a character that gets whacked later on to last forever, to spend as much time with them as possible. Season three is great, four did feel like a bit of a dip for me, then five and six kind of level out to an even keel in my opinion. All around, I think every season is a phenomenal exercise in character writing, plot structure, pacing, and development. Wish I could say the same about the new movie but I kinda got left disappointed by how little we actually get of Michael Gandolfini as Tony

    I want to dislike Tony’s mom like you do, but I just can’t. Sometimes her bitterness and mutual annoyance with her kids is freaking hilarious, other times when she shows what a monster she can be, I find it very impactful. She reminds me a lot of my own mother in certain ways or things she says, and I think that’s why her storyline is probably the most interesting to me. You get an objective look at a dysfunctional mother/child relationship from the outside.

    I watched The Sopranos as each episode was aired live and it remains my favorite show of all time.
    ( I happen to be an Italian American who grew up in Howard Beach and now lives in New Jersey, so this definitely- and literally - hit close to home! Lol!)
    I have watched it through several times and it is one of those very rare series that gets BETTER with each viewing - and most people I know who have seen it feels the same way. Even if they are underwhelmed the first time - they see the greatness of it pretty easily next time around.
    If you look at what TV was before it - and see what it is like after it - you will see the absolutely incredible influence it had on Television in general.
    Besides featuring some of the very best acting ever seen on Television - or Film for that matter - The Sopranos really showed that TV could be every bit as exciting,artistic and as deep as any film could ever be.
    And I LOVE the ending!
    Sure - it’s certainly likely that Tony got killed there - but did anyone really want to see him shot in front of his family like that?

What's so hilarious is, how much influence Cody's rankings have over the people in the comment section. Now every other person who gives their rankings in the comment section rank season 5 #1. Out of hundreds of rankings I've never witnessed anyone rank season 5 as the best and in this comment section their are nearly a dozen (more than half). Good review! I like the reasoning's behind most of it. I'm surprised by the #1 season though, which is fine and I appreciate Cody being original and not scowering the internet and adjusting his list accordingly. Over the years season 5 is most commonly ranked last or second to last if you were to average out every ranking on the internet ever done. Apparently Cody has a lot of influence because I'm checking out the comment section and now I'm seeing others rank season 5 #1 which aside from Cody I've never seen before.
    Overall the seasons of The Sopranos are so close that I don't have a strong opinion on the season rankings... it's a personal preference vs. perhaps a bad interpretation.
    Me personally, one of the reasons as to why I rank season 5 towards the back, is for one of the reasons that Cody gives for season 4 being his least favorite. I can't stand watching marital problems in shows. In season 4, it was only the final episode where they had marital problems, but in season 5 there's a lot more time dedicated to their marital problems and it's not until the end of the 8th episode when they reconcile. Either separate and be done or don't.

    Wow. As much as I admire your videos and rankings, I can't believe how far off your favorites are from mine. Then again, I've been into the Sopranos since day one in 1999 and have rewatched the series probably over 30 times. I feel season 4 is very underrated with original and newbie Soprano fans. Yes, I agree, it is like watching a 10-episode soap opera and has the least number of kills in the series, and not as climatic, but that's why I liked it. We see more of the inner beings of these characters, and who they really are. Season 5....well.... has some of my favorite episodes but also has a lot of my least favorite. That being said my rankings are 1, 6part1, 2, 4, 3, 5, 6 part 2. Yes, I have to divide season 6 because the second half just seemed more like a season 7 and as much as I love 6 part1, I have a hard time putting part 2 along with it. Like better call Saul season 6 and breaking bad season 5 I understand not dividing because the part two series on both those shows start off from where part 1 end.

David Chase had a whole story planned out. It's cool that you gave Season 5 some love though. If I remember correctly that's when the fans on the internet started to whine about the show back in the day. Interesting to see the whole series from the point of view of someone watching it now, instead of watching it in real-time.

    I love the fuck out of this show and it’s very difficult for me to rank the seasons because in my opinion all of the seasons were good not one bad episode and not one bad season in my opinion. This show was just flat out perfection. And one of the biggest influences in one of the biggest reasons why we have all the other great shows that came after it. I mean without the sopranos we wouldn’t have breaking bad. Which is we all know another great fucking masterpiece. Just think how bad ass it would be if we had a Sopranos and breaking bad crossover just imagine Walter White working with Tony soprano. I know we will never get that but just imagine how cool that would be. But yeah I can’t think of anything else to say that hasn’t already been said greatest television show on Earth and nothing will ever top it. James Gandolfini will forever be missed but the legacy that he left behind that is the Sopranos and the character that he played will live on forever.

    3) Season 3
    4) Season 1
    5) Season 6
    6) Season 4 (definitely the most soap opera ish season of the show) The one thing I will say is that Spoiler: the episode where Ralphie gets clipped is my imo the best episode of the show

    I understand that with shows you want to like the characters, but that kinda isn’t the point with The Sopranos so I don’t get some of the complaining about Chris in this video. All the more permanent characters in this show are either criminals or their criminal enablers. One of the whole points of this show is to show the audience a mirror for how bad it is that they spent a decade rooting for these people.

    I totally respect your opinion on the show. You made a lot of good points.
    I will say that a great show or film I personally don't need to "like" or "dislike" a character, as long as they are compelling, authentic and well acted.
    Also, the Season 4 marriage stuff and much of the family stuff in the show is many fans least favorite cause we can't live vicariously through it like the mob stuff. It's just showing us they have the same problems we all have, which can be a bummer.
    The Sopranos represents the highs and lows of TV. It's suppose to exciting and funny AND be a downer that makes you think about the worst parts of human existence.
