  • Dashcam footage of some of Irvine town centre`s main roads taken in May 2020. This is a follow up of videos already uploaded which were taken approx. 20 and 50 years ago to see how the town has changed over the years. This film includes footage of: Kilwinning Rd through the town to Annick Rd, Bridgegate, Bank St, Woodlands Ave, Quarry Rd, East Rd, Kirkgate, Mill Rd, Kerr Dr, Tarryholm, A71 (Southern Approach Rd) over Baillie Bridge (Foullertoun Arches), Riverway Retail Park, Fullarton St (and High Flats), Ayr Rd, Portland Rd, Beach Dr, Harbour St, Montgomery St, Cochrane St and the Northern Approach Rd (Maress Rd). It was filmed during the 2020 Coronavirus `lockdown` so the roads are fairly quiet and car park closures can be seen in the Harbourside area. Some residents can be seen outside their houses clapping to show their appreciation and support of the NHS and other key workers (Mill Rd/Kerr Dr) as was the norm every Thursday evening during the lockdown at 8pm.
    Grateful thanks for anonymous donation of the footage.

    Things change quickly nowadays. The Jet petrol station near the beginning, on Kilwinning Road, is now a Morrisons Daily.

    My home town and where I was born. This was 2 months into the pandemic hence hardly aybody walking around. Makes me nostalgic because at this time I thought I was building a beautiful relationship with someone but it never survived the duration of the pandemic. Imagine being nostalgic about a bloody pandemic, well we all have our own stories I guess. Pity you couldn't show more of the harbour and coast area though.

    Christ on a bike!! They've wrecked a lot of Irvine!! Wtf is the "Portal"? Yes it's been a very long time since I have been there, and as a Kilwinning laddie, I was shocked to see that Kilwinning had been treated to the same vandalism! Both towns looked better in the 1970's and 80s!

    • @historyhusky
      @historyhusky  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes, not all town planning changes have been good ones. The portal is a new leisure centre, magnum now unfortunately demolished, you'd never know it had been there.

      @@historyhusky jeez!! It's like that here in Edinburgh, it's lost a huge part of its character and charm. Architectural and planning vandalism only on a bigger scale.
      I'd heard the magnum was getting demolished, I remember the fanfare of the media when it opened!! I spent a few happy times there. Shame it closed, it was one of the best leisure centres I've been to. Thanks for the drivearound tour, you've captured some modern history in the making!

    I'm a black man but my white ancestors came from this town. My folks were probably slaves of the Boyds. Id like to visit some day Maybe I still have relatives there. I live in MD USA. My great great great grand was Alexander Boyd as I had researched

      Boyd is a very common name around these parts. I hope you manage to visit one day.

    I live in Birmingham now. For all of Irvine's problems I will say this. We Irvinites are pretty decent at architecture, Irvine looks cosy compared to what I see down here. The only part of England that compares is around Sheffield. Hopefully the bigotry will go away. I was watching another video and a rangers fan posted some nasty stuff. It's 2021 not 1891
