The Departed: Revisiting Martin Scorsese's Crime Classic

  • The Departed is the movie that won the legendary Martin Scorsese his first - and to date only - Oscar for Best Director. While it’s outrageous he didn’t win for Raging Bull or Goodfellas, it can’t be denied that his Boston set crime epic struck a chord with audiences, becoming one of his biggest worldwide hits, grossing over $290 million at the box office. Perhaps this isn’t a surprise as the movie teamed some of the biggest stars in Hollywood of the time (the mid-2000s_ with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg playing the leads. The film is actually a remake of the Hong Kong classic Infernal Affairs, which starred Tony Leung and Andy Lau in the roles played here by DiCaprio and Damon.
In it, DiCaprio plays a Boston cop sent undercover into the Irish Mob, run by the psychotic Frank Costello (Nicholson). In return, Costello has a mole of his own, Matt Damon’s Colin Sullivan, who’s rising high in the police department. The two wind up on a violent collision course with fellow Boston cops, played by Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg, along for the ride. It all adds up to one heck of a crime thriller, and the movie which arguably gave Jack Nicholson his final significant big screen role, with him retiring from movies just a few short years after this hit theaters. In this episode of Revisited, we explore The Departed’s origins, the influence the Infernal Affairs trilogy had on the film, and why the movie never got a follow-up, despite a spin-off for Wahlberg’s Dignam being rumoured for years. This episode is written by Cody Hamman, narrated by Travis Hopson, produced by Adam Walton and edited by Juan Jimenez.

I always found the comparison of Infernal Affairs vs The Deparated to be a bit interesting, because on one level, they're almost the exact same movie (a LOT more alike than many remakes which attempt either reimagining or the deconstructionist approach), but they actually result in two vastly different movies from an emotional core. Infernal Affairs was so atmospheric that it was borderline surrealism, while The Departed is a much easier movie to understand, presents its moving parts with more clarity, and moves with a more consistent energy.
While I do like Infernal Affairs more, both are worth watching, and actually work as companion pieces. I was able to enjoy rewatching Infernal Affairs more after seeing The Departed, as it cleared a few of the plot-beats up.

My only criticism really is the overuse of Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones, particularly the second time it’s used in the scene between Matt Damon and Vera Farmiga. Maybe just me but i find that scene weirdly edited because the song restarts after about a minute of playing, so we hear the beginning of the song 3 times in the movie, the other time being the opening scene. I'm not sure he is the main lead but he definitely deserved an Oscar for this role, either inception or shutter Island in 2010 or even both as well.
The revenant was one of his most unwatchable films, probably should have won for the aviator as well tho.

The envelope contained the information about Sullivan that Costigan needed to get to Dingham. He couldn't get in touch with Dingham so he gave it to Madolyn. After Costigan was killed, she found Dingham and gave him the envelope, per Costigan's instructions. Dingham would not have known that Sullivan was the rat otherwise.

Obviously the original director has never been to Boston, if anything they underplayed the amount of swearing except for Mark Wahlberg who as a native, nailed it. Which also goes to show you how well of an actor Matt Damon is who, also a native, downplayed the typical profanity…
