    The wheel spins no matter what we do. In good times, it's a reminder of mortality. In bad times, it's hope. And what the Wheel of Fortune represents ultimately boils down to individual circumstance. Pretty solid summation of existence, a little overemphasis on existential choice, but still pretty solid.

    It hasn't happened yet, but I just watched 24 Hour Party People for the first time today, and this scene is going to make me read Boethius's "Consolation of Philosophy" in the very near future. I like how Coogan/Wilson responds with "I know...I know" as if he's confused but completely understands, which I guess is the point of the quote in the first place.

    • @RichV20
      @RichV20 Před 3 lety +2

      Tony agrees with the philosophy as that is what he is currently dealing with that night. The rise and fall of Ian Curtis and Tony's marriage. Yet Tony doesn't know of the larger rise ahead and the large fall after that.
      The street philosopher plagiarizes Boethius. Later Tony steals from them when saying the exact same thing on "Wheel Of Fortune" at the rise before the fall. He also does come up with his own bastardized version of the centrifuge that keeps spinning everything faster and faster until everything flies everywhere.

      Almost another year. I changed country, and it paid off. Better work, better life, in better physical condition and surrounded by better people. If all was taken away it was for me to have a new start.
      There's always something waiting for those who do not give up and keep on trying. Now it's a matter of following the path and putting in the required work.

    This struck me as the beautiful tragedy of England; they have people sleeping on the street who talk like philosophers. In America we have inarticulate people living in mansions.

    Still, there's truth in this quote isn't there? The best and worst of times are constantly moving and changing, perhaps the character is what someone like Boethius would've said had he been a homeless man living in Britain, maybe.

    Hmm, sorry to tell you folks, but I've been through two different translations of the consolation of philosophy and this section isn't in either. Tony Wilson seems a bit of a con artist and he's done it again :) Boethius mentions a wheel going around and refers to it as a 'wheel of fortune' which is why Tony Wilson mentions it when hosting the eponymous TV show. The real reference is to his TV career it seems and the quote was embellished, well actually just totally made up for the film!

    • @robbiehaggard7878
      @robbiehaggard7878 Před 6 lety +5

      To be fair he doesn't say that he is quoting from the CoP, but that he is the author. The actual belief he states could be from another work.

  • @adam007ize
    @adam007ize Před 11 lety +1

    He says that he is Boethius and what he's famous for. Not everything he says in life is a quote from 'the consolation of philosophy', am sure Enid Blyton spoke to some people in life without using the dialogue of the famous five. I know you were only trying to be clever... but still, trying to be clever is no excuse for ignorance!
