McBride seem talented and nice, and I appreciate that they are dressed up! However, this trio still needs a sax player (Wayne Shorter would be nice), or at least a singer.

+Sven Ekeberg nope, otherwise it wouldnt be a trio. You think the ray brown trio or oscar peterson trio needed a sax player?

      Gabe Rupe Actually, yes ;)
The traditional trio with base + drums + piano tend to sound a little stiff and boring, even if the members are great mucisians and even if there are exceptions. A sax, a flute, a violin, or other instrument can do magic for the variation and freshess of the sound, as well as for the phrasing and harmony.
However, there are other, more unconventional, trio formats that often works better, especially if you look at more than "pure trio jazz/blues"... that is including bossa, salsa, french/gypsy style, etnic and art music, and so on, even pop in some cases.
I must say I have appreciated many such unconventional trios over the years, ranging from Michel Petrutiani + Jim Hall + Wayne Shorter all the way to The Police ;)

You definitely got me there, I would say that Christians goal with this group was to introduce new concepts into the trio format without having unconventional (in the trio sense) instrumentation. There's a bunch of recordings where one can observe relatively abstract concepts being used in this group, whether its different timbres being used, or complex harmony. During an interview with Christian I seem to recall, he was talking about the trio and how it is his attempt to "modernize" the traditional trio. Of course, the quality of a group is subjective, so one may like it and another find it irrelevant, but no one can deny that it swings ridiculously.
