Turn It Off, Turn It Off Again: Stage Hazards Off - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

- Veterans to Smash Bros. know about THOSE stages. WarioWare Inc., Norfair, Magicant, Big Blue, etc.
While not completely lost like 75m, the hazards in these stages can make playing on them less than ideal and often times frustrating. It's hard to have a competitive match when random elements and wacky obstacles disrupt the flow of gameplay. I've always dreamed of playing these stages without the hazards...and well, look at this. Smash Ultimate is living up to its name with the stage hazard toggle.
By heading into the options menu and switching "Stage Hazards" to "Off", a whole new world opens up to us, and some courses finally become desirable to me! This does come with its own oddities though. Some stages are just how you always wanted them, while others are...well let's just say not the decision I would have made.
So let's snap that cartridge into the Nintendo Switch and discuss my particular topic of choice, Stage Hazards Off! Stage and character spoilers if you want to go into Ultimate blind, fyi.

This is another Off-The-Wall video, so I'm trying out a few things here. Be sure to tell me what works and what doesn't!

Errors in the video:
The X on Smashville should be over Town and City.
Miiverse could have an X over it.
Mushroomy Kingdom Hazards Off solidifies the breakable blocks. My rating still stands. - Hry
Yoshi story is just unplayable without Randall
I see you are a man of culture as well, your remembered our Lord and savor Randall. He is not just the cloud, he is Randall.
I see that you two are also fans of luv dix
Randall is the best cloud, Better than Cloud
@@FloppyDisk893 I completely agree. When I found out that Randall was considered a hazard, that made me upset. Randall is the best.
My problem with Yoshi Story is that Shy Guys spawn with food even with items off. That needs to be patched eventually.
I'm just bothered that sometimes moving platforms are considered hazards and sometimes they aren't.
I wish Wily's Castle still had the cool moving platform patterns when hazards were off.
Yellow Devil may suck, but hazards off is basically Smash 4 Omega form, which is pretty lame.
I like hazards off on Wily since it's flat but has the walls
* AWESOMEMAN * Yeah if only there was another stage like that so Wily can have the moving platforms.
For Smash 6 they should have different tiers of hazards. For example I want to still play reset bomb forest without the bones guy but I want to be in the actual forest. Also allow us to pick a spot to fight in scrolling or touring stages
Kyle Campbell technically they probably could just add that in an update.
They should put a stage hazard toggle on the stage select screen. It's annoying having to go back and change a rule set just to get moving platforms on a stage like fountain of dreams.
seriously, you can toggle between omega and battlefield WHY NOT HAZARDLESS
You can just make two rulesets, with one hazards on and anothing hazards off. It takes like 5 seconds to go back a screen and switch rulesets since you can save multiple!
People are making way too big a deal about this.
it's a pointless QOL annoyance, it has no place in the game. put it as a toggle on the stage select screen, there's no reason not to.
Thankfully this game is getting active patches
@@NZsaltz You can't change rulesets while playing with friends online, so it absolutely is a big deal.
This should have been an option per stage
exactly i dont wanna turn off randall but i wanna turn off yellow devil
Personally, I think the Stage Hazard could have three settings:
1 - All hazards ON
2 - All hazards OFF
3 - Only deterministic hazards (e.g. breakable walls in Shadow Moses)
Also, for stages with clear transitions (Reset Bomb Forest, Pokemon Stadiums, etc), if hazards are off you should be able to select which 'phase' you want the stage to see, and the stage STARTS and STAYS in that layout. Living Room, for example, without the blocks it would just be "Final Destination but with walkoffs" like Bridge of Eldin.
It would also be cool to specify hazards on/off on a per-stage basis.
Stratelier A bit more complicated than what I'd expect to see in Smash.
Agree with the last part. Since hazards off ruins half of the stages, they shouldve either made it easier to turn on and off or made it like random stage switch. It would be so cool to have pokemon stadium 1 have hazards on but pokemon stadium 2 with hazards off, since the transformations on ps1 are good, but the starting layout is unique.
they should have just had it as a toggle like Battlefield and Omega forms.
Want to know what gets me? They have that Custom Balance thing where you can set handicaps per fighter, but they don't let you do that with stages and hazards.
Yeah I feel if I play reset bomb forest without hazards I should be playing in well.... the reset bomb forest
Why do people act like the Frigate flip is jarring? It's telegraphed to hell
Even if it's telegraphed, it's not like fighting stops when it happens. if you get launched right before the flip, you'll just suddenly be on like the opposite side of the map, and that can be real jank.
Shut up, Lucius.
My only problem with the Stage Hazard Toggle is that you can't toggle it on map select. There are some maps that have barely hazardous hazards that get removed.
For example, the N64 DK stage with hazards off has no barrel, and the platforms don't rotate of all things. This stage is perfectly fine with the "hazards" on, but there's no easy way to just switch them back on when you want to.
xdragoonzero0 hopefully this is fixed with an update
go on rainbow cruise with no hazzards. then go to the top, double jump and up b, pause and move the camera up. the rest of the scroll part of the stage is still there, but you can go through it.
Am I the only one who likes adapting to hazards lol
(Except for yellow devil obviously)
_Certain_ hazards and interactive props are actually fun and add a bit of depth to the field. But that's decided on a case-by-case basis.
Yes
I don't mind them but I agree there stage with bad one.
No, you're not. Many people love hazards on as well, such as myself. xD My favorite stage in the entire series would be worthless with hazards off: Gamer. Where's the fun in that stage if you don't have to hide every time Mom comes on screen. Or more importantly, shove someone out to be caught by Mom. lmao
I never turn stage hazards off
It makes the stages special imo
🦀 *_FLYING MAN IS GONE!_* 🦀
Fun fact: just like in EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings, there are only five Flying Men (per match). Once all five are KOed, no more will appear.
...Granted, that's still a looooong way to go before you're left only with the less frustrating hazards.
Kaptain K Rool and his Krew of Kremlings Kapture the Karavel Karelessly.
A lot of those hazard off stages can be incredibly bland, which is probably why they mix up the hazard types. Rather then remove the breakable blocks or turn blocks for example, which would mean the stage becomes very bare bones and essentially a flat plain. I think the idea is hazard off is suppose to remove hazards but not make the stage as bland or as flat as others. Like how that one platform in Animal Crossing prevents it from being Final Destination.
The idea is to have them be unique, which is to say the Mario stages which kept their unique aspects are because otherwise it would be horribly generic or just another hazard off stage with a different background. They are trying to avoid that, because otherwise it is just all FD or Battle Field...
What was the Olimar cpu (lv. 7) doing?
Will this mystery ever be solved?
He just wanted to know what midgar looks like close-up
He was trying to contact his people
Walking
He was trying to carry his carrots back to the stage
probably was trying to figure out what that fox was doing on---- I mean... just sightseeing, I guess
With stage hazards on in Pilotwings, both planes can tilt. Hazards Off Pilotwings cuts out the tilting. You mentioned this for Lylat but not for Pilotwings, thought i’d share it.
Ah ok, I didn't notice! Thanks for letting me know!
Pilotwings Vocal Mix (SSB4) is the best change my mind
Now all we need is the ability to set hazards based on stage instead of blanket on or off similar to choosing random stages. Also, for stages with transitions that wouldn't be seen normally should be able to be able to pick the version somehow.
I kinda like the stage hazard sometimes because of the randomness and the fun of it
Hazards off should be selectable from the map select screen, like how battlefield and omega are! That way, it'd be much easier to go between maps which have "good" hazards, and ones that don't.
I'm shocked no one in the comments (that I've seen scrolling through it a bit) has pointed out that Hazards Off on Mushroomy Kingdom also makes brick blocks unbreakable, whereas they're breakable with Hazards On.
Ah! How did I miss this? Thanks for pointing it out! I think my rating would still stand as it is.
@@ParticularMushroom Well yeah, the only part someone would want to remove in that stage is the scrolling, not the bricks. xD
I really like Hazard on, on Gameroom. It adds a feild of suspense
Ur cool
Personally, while I find some stages are definitely more fun without hazards (Like Big Blue, because it's just so novel), I'm the kind of guy who loves wacky and weird stages.
My favorite stages in the series are the ones I can abuse to defeat all my friends, who seem to just not be able to wrap their heads around adapting to changing situations. xD Pokefloats, Big Blue, Great Sea, and Gamer, I love these stages. In fact, I'd argue that Gamer is the best stage in the entire series hands down. Other stages that are among my favorites ever are: Bridge of Eldin, Temple, Pokemon Stadium, Kalos Pokemon League, Luigi's Mansion, and Garden of Hope. My brother's favorites are Port Town Aero Dive and Norfair, and a friend of mine pretty much always picks the FE stages (which are definitely all wacky).
So while hazards off are great for many people, for me it's just a neat thing to try out and something that helps make competitive actually fun to watch lol. I do think it's a healthy addition to the game, since so many people are happy about it, but it sorta makes a lot of really fun stages turn really boring (Like Paper Mario and literally every transformation stage).
If you don’t use Ashley’s theme on WarioWare then what are you doing
22:12 no, bad, this stage is infinitely better with the mom.
her name is 5-volt you uncultured swone
To say they are playable now seems to say you couldn't enjoy playing them before.
Yeah I probably should have been a little less harsh in some areas. Magicant though, I stand by that.
@@ParticularMushroom funnily enough that's one of my favorites.
Tarponpet Secord playable is not equal to enjoyable. In a casual setting most maps are enjoyable, but not competitively viable.
I would much prefer that stage hazards off should be allowed to selected with omega and battlefield forms
Nah, you already decided to not have fun
@@OhNoTheFace Huh? What?
@@faultymixup3347 They think you meant turning off hazards when you play Omega or Battlefield forms which doesn't even make any sense because they're already gone. They aren't thinking straight.
@@velocirock7421 Yeah I do believe you are right But I meant as in they should Put the option in next to omega and battlefield stage forms
So when you press X you can go from Omega battlefield and then finnaly stage hazarfs off
I never noticed they only added 4 new stages until now
Same... at least we get 5 more with dlc... but dlc...
"Gamer: Hazard's Off Superior"
You disgust me.
“moses island with hazards off is a cage match”
**SSF2 Moses Island flashbacks**
Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy that the hazard toggle is a thing at all, but I still think there are a few things that could be done to improve the feature.
1: Hazard toggle on the stage select screen. This would just be an extremely useful QOL addition, especially in online lobbies.
2: More in-depth toggle:
You should be allowed to turn off certain types of hazards, while having the option to keep others on, I.e. toggling moving platforms, stage bosses, stage transformations etc. separately. For example: Playing with the moving platforms on Wily's castle without having to deal with the yellow devil.
3: For transforming stages, you should be able to pick which phase of the stage you want to play on, so as to not lock the player into only playing the first phase of a level when stage tranformations are inactive.
These aren't really necessary additions to the game, and their absence don't hinder my enjoyment of it in any major way, but it would just be nice to have these options available.
(Edit: For point 2, it would also be interesting to be able to choose if interactable/destructible and/or moving platforms could be chosen to either be stationary or removed altogether.)
I’m such a fan of your content. You make quality videos, on unusual topics, while keeping them entertaining and funny
It's been so long since you last uploaded; watched the Yoshi Story video too many times to count
Y'all came to see yellow devil I know it
Yo, gimme that pfp sauce
*never*
you monster

P pleaseeeeee
I think that playing smash without stage hazards is like a meal without spices, pepper and salt. But that is the fun part about this game, everybody can enjoy it the way they like it. I just love this game.
I agree. There are some stages I prefer without hazards. There are some meals I prefer without spices, pepper, and salt.
In that case, Wily Castle w/ Hazards is a fucking Ghost Pepper. Way too spicy.
@@GmNdWtchr96 And Gaur Plain is the Carolina Reaper both with and without Metal Face.

Loved that brief crab rave meme. Also, I'm glad your channel is seeing some growth :) Been here since near the beginning and it's good to see somebody with good content grow
I'm glad that Ultimate made one little change to WarioWare - its reward list now includes Metal, but also got rid of Invincibility. That was my one big gripe about the stage in the past two generations. What's the point of any other reward if your opponent can't be affected by anything for the same duration?
The slight pause at the end of Brinstar Depths was so funny. And the end card... priceless!
Thank you SO MUCH for making a video on this! I LOVE the fact that they can be turned off, giving people WAAAAAAAAY more stages to play 1v1 on online.~ It's waaaaaaay better than how Smash 4 handled it.
You came outta nowhere with a new video
I am very happy
Love your work as always PM ♥
i love you so much! whenever you make a video, i get so happy!
I agree with pretty much all the stages except for WarioWare, Gamer and Wuhu Island.
The minigames, -Satan- 5-Volt and stage transitions are what make them special. Otherwise it's almost battlefield with better music and background
I prefer WarioWare with stage hazards because without it its not wario ware, but I can see the appeal of the unique platform placements
@@Linktober04 Turning off stage hazard's on WarioWare, Inc. still makes it unique, that stage layout placement is nice.
@@spectral5939 I know, thats the point im making
Thank you for not stretching your critique out. I hate when people waste time not getting to the point for ad rev.

Favourite CZcamsr meets favourite game. I'm one happy Sophie rn
Here are my opinions:
Peach's Castle: Hazards on, it's bland without them
Kongo Jungle: Hazards on, moving platforms are better
Hyrule Castle: Hazards on, tornadoes help prevent camping
Super Happy Tree: Hazards on, vanishing clouds prevent camping and stalling out the timer
Dream Land 64: No preference, wind doesn't make much of a difference
Saffron City: Hazards on, Pokemon help prevent wall infinites
Mushroom Kingdom I: Hazards off, pipes encourage circle camping
Princess Peach's Castle: Hazards on, banzai bills discourage wall infinites
Rainbow Cruise: Hazards off, do I need to explain?
Kongo Falls: Hazards on, klap trap prevents camping on the rock
Jungle Japes: No preference, klap trap does not contribute much to the fight
Great Bay: No preference, Tingle doesn't do much
Brinstar: Hazards off, acid is awful
Yoshi's Island (Melee): Hazards on, unbreakable blocks cause jank
Yoshi's Story: Hazards on, unplayable without Randall
Fountain of Dreams: Hazards on, I want an interesting Battlefield clone
Green Greens: Hazards off, bombs are too powerful
Corneria: Hazards on, I don't want people to camp on the blaster
Venom: Hazards on, Wolfens and Arwings provide extra platforms
Pokémon Stadium: Hazards on, No reason to not have transformations
Onett: Hazards off, the cars are awful
Mushroom Kingdom II: Hazards off, eggs are too powerful
Brinstar Depths: Hazards on, the platform in the corner is jank
Big Blue: Hazards on, falcon flyer is quite small
Fourside: Hazards off, UFO causes too many stage spikes
Mushroomy Kingdom: No preference, I don't like items in Ultimate so it makes no difference
Figure-8 Circuit: Hazards off, racers disrupt gameplay too much
WarioWare, Inc.: Depends on my mood
Bridge of Eldin: Hazards off, King Bulbin forces everyone into the air
Norfair: Hazards off, lava is awful
Frigate Orpheon: Hazards on, multiple layouts is nice and the flip isn't too bad
Yoshi's Island (Brawl): Hazards on, I like moving platforms
Halberd: Depends on my mood
Lylat Cruise: Hazards off, stage tilting is awful
Pokémon Stadium 2: No preference, some transformations are good, some are bad
Castle Seige: Hazards on, I like varying layouts
Distant Planet: Hazards off, pellet posies can be janky at times
Smashville: Hazards on, I like moving platforms
New Pork City: Hazards on, Ultimate Chimera speeds up the fight and prevents camping
Summit: Hazards on, the fish is awful
Skyworld: Hazards on, hazards off is an indefinite cave of life
Shadow Moses Island: Hazards on, I like being able to KO off the side
Luigi's Mansion: Hazards on, you should be able to destroy the mansion
Pirate Ship: Hazards off, catapults and canons disrupt the match too much
Spear Pillar: Hazards on, the legendary pokémon need to be there to prevent camping
75m: Hazards on, I dunno I'm the only person in the entirety of the universe to like this stage. fireballs prevent camping
Mario Bros.: Depends on my mood
Hanenbow: Hazards off, the moving platforms are a bit awkward
Green Hill Zone: Hazards on, checkpoints are awful
3D Land: No preference, see mushroomy kingdom
Golden Plains: Hazards off, the coins distract the fight too much
Paper Mario: Hazards on, I like varying layouts
I'll do the rest later
It feels like stage hazards have no balancing to them. They go from minor annoyances to "oops you died." They would be so much better if they had some basic guidelines to them.
1) The goal should always be to fight the opponent. Players should be mindful of them, but the hazard in question should not stop the flow of battle or consume the player's attention. (Unlike Norfair, Wily Castle)
2) Stage hazards should be sufficiently telegraphed so that the players may react to them. (As a poorly telegraphed hazard causes a player to blame the stage for their death, like Jungle Japes' klaptrap)
3) Stage hazards should not just punish people, but to reward those who use their environment to their advantage. (Such as tossing a player into the red bulborb on distant planet)
This won't fix all of the problems you brought up in the video, but I think they would go a long way towards preventing stages that are pretty much player vs environment.
I love spear pillars design with the beautiful lights and how they change with the legendaries. Only if hazards off collapsed the cave entrances
This is a really fun video, keep it up
No items, Fox only, final destination
That feeling when smashville’s platform is considered a “hazard” but the living room blocks aren’t.
Interesting design choice Nintendo
Just imagine having the option of Hazzards On, Hazzards Off, and a Custom Toggle.
No Yellow Devil or Flying Men without getting rid of the other hazzards!
You're a pretty underrated content creator, love your vids Bro keep it up
Ah, good content as always. Good job Mushy.
So many channels coming back Alive
The main reason I'm not too big of a fan of hazard's off is probs cuz I'm not a big competitive player. And turning off hazards pretty much renders each stage a bunch of platforms and the game the stage is based on is irrelevant.
Your back!!!!!
😄 Love the Genesis reference in the title! I clicked on the video just because of that!
22:15 which version of Gamer is that? It looks cool
I appreciate the Genesis reference in the title
If there was an option to toggle stage hazards for specific stages, Yellow Devil & the Flying Men would be BURIED forever.
mushroom at 12 minutes in: "Really too short of a video"
Me: what the heck are smoking???
RIP Randall. I made two similar rulesets for hazards on and off, one for Randall, one without.
Guys, remember that leak for Mario Odyssey that claimed that Delfino Plaza was a DLC Kingdom? The Delfino Plaza in Smash Ultimate is really close to the leaked version.
The Delfino Plaza stage has been 1:1 with the same area in Sunshine ever since Brawl (aside from the extra platforms on the Shine Gate, of course).
There were so many stages that would have been good for competitive, but they were set back by whatever stage hazard they have, like microgames, cannons, bosses, etc.
Personally I really enjoy Green Hill Zone with hazards on, the checkpoint ball thing is really easy to avoid but also a lot of fun to use. I also really like the floor breaking, gives this stage some extra challenge while staying fairly easy to avoid
If hazards are turned off, there is this symbol on top of the Stage Selection Screen. Just leave it there and make it a toggle. Even back in the day when hazards were announced this aggravated me because I figured it would be necessary to take the detour to the ruleset every time.
Good video, you did a tremendous work :)
I'm kind of indecisive about stage hazards. On one hand, it means you can actually play on stages without having to resort to the battlefield or final destination forms (which are fun but a little basic and boring to just never switch off of) but on the other hand, it disables a lot more than just what you'd consider "hazards". Stuff like the moving platform in Smashville and Town and City, the platforms dropping in fountain of dreams, stuff like that.
The crab dance got me
17:27 that caught me off guard. I laughed a little of how you lost.
Particular mushroom singing Mona Pizza is godlike.
You didn't cross off Miiverse since now it is just battlefield.
Oh whoops! You're right.
This is a great video. I agree with you so much!
Great video! But at 3:42 when you say “this here is mona pizza” siri thinks im saying something
I love having the hazards on it they add to the stage and when playing with friends it's just great
If you play Shadow Moses Island with stage hazards off and stage morph on, you can get stuck on the other side of one of the walls where it is impossible to hit the other player.
I like how no one commented about that *Lit Game and Watch 0 To Death Combo*
For some maps that have multiple sections I wish we could choose which section it stays at example being castle siege where my favorite stage of that map is the second stage. Otherwise I am glad this feature exists.
3:09 It never was a lottery if you do the challenges right you get a power up.
wait particular made a video not about mario sunshine?
there was also the luigi's mansion one and the mario odyssey review and rotozoa and the tooth and tail review and the discord announcement
wow that must have been exhausting
I like the stage hazards (except for the bosses that just keep coming back no matter how many times you kill them) they make the match more epic to play just like items (I like to play with items on medium, usually with healing items off as well as certain other items). Playing on JUST final destination and battle field stages is so boring, even when we turn items off and get serious. With me it's a sign of skill when you can pay attention to your opponent as well as the stage and use hazards to your advantage. It showed a deeper level of strategic thinking in my opinion. I wish more pro players had this mentality because then tournaments wouldn't get so boring so quickly with competitors using the same combos over and over. It's just kinda frustrating how everytime a Smash game comes out most of the stages get immediately banned because they're not flat and boring. Some stages I understand, but damn they just go way too far and sound so whiny about it like little kids not getting their way. Anyway this went on for way longer than I planned it too lol. Guess I'm more passionate about it than I thought lol.
Also, sweet victory at the beginning.
Man I love this option!
0:42 Yes. Yes we are 😅 I can’t help it, he’s fun to play as
18:11 Ultimate Chimera? Cool
Pilotwings should be set to hazards on. There are a few spots where cave walls can obstruct KOs, or unexpectedly KO people in the air in Hazards off, so you may as well get the full experience anyways.
The Jungle Japes water stayed because it wasn't really a hazard so much as a basic mechanic tied to the stage.
Great vid. Time to Subscribe
My favorite hazards off stage is Kalos Pokemon League. I love the platform layout.
7:28 "Paint me like one of your French girls"
instead of having an on/off toggle, each stage should have an on/off toggle so if you like one stage with hazzards off, but another on, you don't have to keep changing the option
Hey, I just wanted t say this was really funny and entertaining to watch, and I just love your style of videos! Keep up the good work?
I noticed that thing with Living Room, too, and it reeeaaally confused me when I first saw it. By the way, I like the tone and emphasis when you say "please" at the end of the line at 10:40 (and the rest of the line is pretty good too), it's really amusing for some weird reason.
Also, the rapid-fire hazard notes are a little hard to keep up with. Maybe a pause between hazards on/off and the next stage appearing would be easier to keep up with.
Brinstar's also cool with hazards off, the acid doesn't rise and you can't break the membranes
I believe Mario Galaxy flips when hazards off.
Edit: Nope I'm just crazy! But I do remember hearing that one of the stages does flip with hazards off
20:16 is my favorite part
That game & watch battle made me laugh really hard. Hopefully, you unlocked him eventually.
