It seems to me that if you reduce the amount of fertilizer banded the tenant sees a direct benefit from this but the land lord could experience an overall reduction of fertility across his field. This is essentially referred to mining the soil fertility. We have a farm with a minimum fertility trigger built into the lease. Our tenant has been strip tilling for several years and out overall fertility has been reduced to the point where we may require him by contract to broadcast some build-up fertilizer. I would like to see what happens if you band 50% and broadcast 50% or even 25%. Would this allow the greater yield while maintaining overall fertility? Obviously the profit potential for a grower is higher if he doesn't broadcast because he has saved 50% of his bill for dry application but at wat cost to the land owner?
