Joey was always my favorite. Especially when seeing how humble Matt LeBlanc was about it. He said people would come up to him and tell him how clever he was in the role, and he'd say, "It's the writers."
Sure the writers gave him the lines, but not everyone can pull off a believable dumb character who isn’t annoying, Matt LeBlanc should give himself more credit

my favourite is when chandler accidentally slips out ross is in love with rachel, he starts rubbing his head because he is stressed and joey just pats him on the back and says, "that's good, keep rubbing your head. that'll turn back time." it's just funny and refreshing to see joey mocking chandler in a clever way once in a while.

When Joey corrects Ross by saying it's "whom" and not "who," that was a callback to The One With Joey's Big Break. In that episode, Ross is trying to find out why Phoebe is mad at him, and Monica suggests it's because he's always correcting their grammar whenever they say "who" instead of "whom." Now Joey gets to correct Ross on the same subject. That particular moment was great.
Also, in rewatching all those clips, I think most of them involve Joey out-thinking Ross. So much for the supposed intellectual of the group.

One of my favorite Joey moments is when he explained to Chandler that he uses 2 bars of soap. Chandler had a weird facial expression and Joey said, yeah think about the last thing I wash and the first thing you wash. That was one of the most intelligent Joey moments!

The smartest thing he said had to be when Ross was trying to get Rachael to move in with him so things between them could possibly work out in the future. Joey said Ross you don’t want to do this man. You still have feelings for her and she is going to be coming back to your apartment with random guys, it’s going to crush you mentally. You shouldn’t do this. I thought that was the smartest thing that he ever said.

Except when the guys were on a ride along with Gary? (Phoebe’s cop boyfriend), heard what the three of them thought was a gunshot, and Joey dove to shield Ross (but later admitted to Chandler that he was actually trying to protect the best sandwich in the world 🤣).

It’s because of Joey being so stupid normally that the reactions of others in such situations ends up being rly rly funny. It’s a skillful way that the writers made full use of the kind of character they gave to Joey.

In the scene where Chandler accidentally implied that Ross was in love with Rachel you can tell by Joey's eyes and body language that he realized what Chandler had done before Chandler figured it out.
Also, Phoebe is sometimes extremely intelligent... Look at the moments where she plays little game with Rachel laying to her that she was not pregnant in order for her to realize her own feelings about that... And the scene where she asks from Monica to keep her away from Marc, she tested her first... Impressive.
Phoebe is actually the most intelligent and sharpest in girls! Rachelle is kind of immature and kind of that girl. Monica always keeps nagging, complaining (I am not saying Rachel & Monica are bad). Phoebe on the other hand is heart warmer & sharp personality at the same time.

I just remember 1) the time he convinced the adoption evaluator that he didn’t call not because he was a playboy but because she didn’t leave her number 2) when he showed interest to the encyclopedia salesman, spent easily an hour with him and, when it came time to buy, he pointed out how he was at home in the middle of the day sitting on patio furniture, clearly unable to buy anything real (“Not everything can be learned in books.”)
There were some more I think. One of them was telling Chandler to break up with Janice if she has a chance to get back with her husband, preventing a family from falling apart.

Joey had always been super smart but it was always hidden by the facade he held.
I loved that last 4th wall break.
He reminds me of myself, my friends view me as a dumb guy, but every now and then I say something intelligent or make an observation they don't notice and are like "what the hell?"
I remember I had a really good idea once and later on my friend saw that and was like "Bro, where the hell are these ideas when you're around me?"
..I think the point is that when Joey seems to be the smartest one in the room it's that the others are being dense if not outright stupid.
