Period Paid Leave पर Lallantop Newsroom में लोगों ने क्या-क्या बता दिया? | Smriti Irani

  • Union Minister Smriti Irani has opposed mandatory paid menstrual leave, considering menstruation a natural part of life. While acknowledging menstrual hygiene's importance, Irani announces a draft national policy to raise awareness and improve access to proper menstrual hygiene practices. Irani's announcement follows a parliamentary report on menstrual leave, positioning it as a health issue under the health ministry's purview. In contrast to Spain, India currently has no proposal for mandatory menstrual leave. While there has been an ongoing demand for the paid period leave, the statement of Union Women & Child Minister Smriti Irani has attracted diverse reactions. What does the Lallantop Newsroom think about it? Watch the video!

    My opinion -
    1) It cannot be a paid leave. It must be an unpaid leave if you are not working. This is because it will benefit only office-going women. Other women are paid if they work. So it will act as a discrimination against them.
    2) If you do not agree with unpaid leave then a median national income equivalent to 1 day's work must be paid every month to every woman irrespective of the fact whether they work or not.
Anything else has 2nd/3rd order discrimination.

I think Govt. might be scared that if they passed the bill for the paid period leave then it can severely affect the employment rate of women because every private business makes sure that the employees should get as minimum leaves as possible. So if they passed this bill then employers might just give more preference to men than women(even more than today) during the hiring process. I might be wrong, but I think companies should have something like 10-12 paid period leaves for women yearly, so whenever it becomes unbearable they can utilize it.

    Few observations/suggestions:
    1. Majority of the speakers made the topic very simplistic and came to the conclusion that there should be paid leaves for periods. I a regular viewer of LT expected more from the LT team. (except for few people)
    2. Companies/organizations hire people to accomplish a task and contribute to the growth of the company. Companies are not charity organizations to pay/aid people without work. Even the so called “paid leaves” people get are actually considered when planning compensation of an employee. Any law around this can very easily backfire against women.
    3. I would have loved to see a more nuanced approach to the problem. Finding solution is what humans are great at, LT team failed at bringing the seriousness to the discussion and rather talked in a very emotional sense.
    4. I felt some of the speakers felt not confident in saying what they actually feel but rather just joined the crowd. This is not going to get us to the solution.
Lastly, thanks for bringing this topic in discussion. This helps make people(mainly men) aware that there is a problem that needs to be solved. Continue the good work!

Females for numerous years have tolerated and forced to live by the rules made by insensitive men barring a few. You also join the bandwagon. To give or not give a leave or to take or not take a leave in individual and subjective.
But to not even discuss that there is a serious problem is problematic. I would appreciate if men also wholeheartedly give up the unfair pay that they receive against the equal work woman do. Why not also speak up unbiased o the pay parity. Make that equal too.
Its strange naa that we work your equals and are paid peanuts. Its always different when you are on the receiving end. Leaves of such manner are not privelege but a need for many woman.

Currently, I am on parental leave (6 months equal to `maternity leave`) - we have such policies in our organisation. Some of us will ask why you need leave for 6 months as a male (more as a father). I can discuss why we have such policy, it's impact on work-environment, economy, equal opportunities and many more.
We should have a discussion around such topics and have analysis of each possible aspects we can think of right now.
I have firm believe in discussion - not running away from issue. Doctors, Psychologists, People Mangers, Economists, Workers and so on can discuss and put there points and based on findings, such issues can be / should be addressed.

There could be 2 possibilities - 1 ) Undue advantage of the leaves 2) Person going through actual pain
The mensuration cycle sometimes gets delayed due to some health conditions....this can lead / affect the work if the person is solely responsible for his / her own work ( when no-one else perform his / her duties )
giving paid leaves/LWP is an optional ( this is applied in Bihar and state ) depending upon office policies.
so first check or find out ( collect the survey data ) what is the real impact on the work if anyone is taking period leaves

I believe the foremost thing to note is that pain has no gender-based definition. Secondly, Vikas, you did a great job, emphasizing that we can openly address each other's problems and issues on this platform.
In my opinion, there should be a provision for period leave in every company, regardless of the pain tolerance levels of women. The company's framework should address this issue. If they choose not to provide paid leave, they should either mandate remote work benefits or allow employees to compensate for those leaves based on their workdays. This would eliminate the issue of salary deductions, and women can proudly assert to any chauvinistic individuals that their contributions are equally important for the company and society.

My suggestion is to make it “half pay” than “ full pay “. Women do suffer a lot. But full paid leave will demoralise the companies to hire women. How come maternity leave is connected to this issue??? A woman goes through, physical pain, emotional turmoil, hormonal changes during pregnancy as well as after delivery. The body needs time to recover. Besides, a baby needs to be breastfeeding EXCLUSIVELY FOR 6 MONTHS.
Child care leave is for a maximum 2 years..One YEAR PAID NEXT YEAR HALF-PAID. If men feel that's an advantage then it should be changed and men should be given CHILD CARE LEAVE PROVIDED THEY TAKE WHOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF CHILD CARE

5 days period leave = 1 working week
That means women will work only 3/4th of the month. Which means they'll be 33% more expensive for companies to hire and if govt. brings such regulation, no employer would prefer to hire a woman. Think wisely.

Well the issue raised in parliament is a valid issue to be discussed and debated just like paid maternity leave was also once not available and then was discussed debated and brough and was accepted by industry.
    My initial opinion is:-
    1) A no question asked or default leave will affect women themselves. So its not just the women in IT or media or some other job, it has to be given to women working in factories, construction and other labour intensive industry which which leave a little incentive for the owner to hire women worker. In time where some business owner are already discussing more working hours, this will not be liked by business owner thus creating negative market sentiment and more job losses. (Maybe women will ve less preferred for such job)
    2) This unequal distribution of leaves (of course for no fault of theirs) will create more disparity in income and will again pose a question of how shall you be appraised for your job? Lets say a man does work on same quality for 10 days and women also work with same quality but for 9 days then should she be judged for the 9 days she worked or for 10? Because its possible that the one extra day might have given men an edge (off course for no fault of theirs), now this will firther increase the gender pay gap.
    3) In a country where more and more women are joining workforce, the absolute equality is hard to achieve but shall be pursued. For starters I believe we can start with complementary off.

The company businesses will also be impacted as its not matter of one woman or one day ... Our mom's don't take any leave neither any of college students or school students... I work in UK, here employers give unlimited sick leaves upto 30 days, and then 25% pay for any sick absences after that. Any continuous sick absence for more than 3 days has to be supported by doctor's note. These sick leaves include leaves for mental health issues. I personally feel this policy gives me confidence that my employer treats me like a human resource, and I've not seen anyone misusing this policy. This promotes culture of honesty, plus equality.

There are sick leaves, PL, other leaves, women should be allowed to take leave from their set of leaves or WFH should be given, even flexible working hours should be allowed without any questions asked.
But giving additional leaves impact working women itself.. already 7 months pregnancy leaves impact their hiring, MCNs may not be thinking it, but small companies do think twice before hiring female and ask additional questions regarding their marital status.
If additional period leaves are compulsory.... All companies will start thinking twice before hiring females...and demoralize them.

During holidays or during paid leaves or going outing with your family or with your boyfriend if periods are there, then they are ok and they don't have any problems, only at workplace they have problems. No body is talking about the misuse of these paid leaves if provided. The best example is that of false dowry and rape cases against men and this happened only when strict laws were made but the equality is missing in it too. Well i too agree that women goes through a lot of pain during those days but before bringing any law, it must be made sure that equality in terms of work must also be considered. I like and agree to one of the team members of LT who said that the work pay must be based on number of working hours. Equality in terms of pay to women should also be considered as per their efficiency regardless of any gender. Bringing equality in real sense will only justify a good law.

She is amazing girl and beautiful 🙏🙏🙏

If the pain is subjective, why should there be generalization in the form of a Bill/Law?!? A provision for the same can be drafted in the joining letter and females who feel indisposed, can use it as and when required!

Very good opinions. I agree pain is pain whether it's a period or any crisis and that definitely depends upon individual. I really appreciate women. A female body has different needs. I also support the hourly work culture and 5 days of the weekly work payment system. In now situation there must be 12 paid leave at least given to women in a year in a separate category . I also support feeding breaks to grow their children healthy if a mother is at work. I found your office culture is very supportive for women's sensitivity in this discussion. I also love the lallantop and saurabh chaturvedi. I am Reetesh Naik from chhattisgarh. I am a sickle cell disabled and I know the pain over our body. We struggle a lot to achieve our identity from a disease to disable. In this period of time no one was and is understanding how our body goes through and social stigma . For a period of 10 years of struggle with the authority now Our PM modiji is doing awareness for SCD is our achievement. Still long to go . because Our system is not that much accessible. My best wishes to women. We respect you, we value you,we love you. We are here because of You .Thank you so much for this talk 🙏.

Schools me aisi demand kyu nahi thi aap logo ki??? What about during exams??? What about women playing sports??? What about housewives??? Ek shuruaat ke taur pe jo leaves ki demand kar rahe hain ya support kar rahe hain, wo ye chuttiyan pehle apni maids, house helps, apni mothers ko dena shuru karke raah kyu nahi dikhati???
Ek tareeka bht simple sa hai. Monthly salary sabki chargeability ke hisab se kariye. Month me jitne working days hain, usme 8 hrs/day ke hisab se total hours complete karne pe full salary dein. Baki bache hours chahe wo compensate karein baki din kaam karke, ya fir pro-rated basis pe salary draw karein. Jitna ho sake log koshish karke work from home se manage kar sakte hain, warna fir pro-rated basis pe apne chargeable hours ka paisa uthaiye.
This is the most fool-proof way to tackle this issue.
