CIVIL DEFENSE INFORMATION FILM FALLOUT SHELTER SURVIVAL 29102

  • This Cold War film "Information Within Public Shelters" takes place in a fallout shelter, showing how a well-trained staff that provides information to shelter occupants, can keep them busy and calm during nuclear armageddon.
This film was produced as the U.S. Government began to shift from promoting privately-owned "family" fallout shelters to the concept of large, public shelters. Of course, it is hard to imagine nuclear armageddon would like anything remotely like this film …which feels more like an episode of 'The Twilight Zone' than a morale-boosting movie.

My grandfather was a volunteer for the Civil Defense in my hometown. Chances are, he watched these same films.

The date that I'm writing this is April 16, 2022. As I write this, I'm 61 years old and I'm just now finding out what the heck fallout shelter was. I remember seeing these posted outside of some buildings in the City of Chicago and wondering what the heck that meant. I never asked anyone either. I thought it was that I had to be careful walking through there lest anything fall out of the roof of the building on my head.😂

These films always depict nice, clean, well dressed 'good people like us' middle class white folks in the suburbs.

These films are a great snapshot of life during the Cold War, obviously mostly about a nuclear attack, but, and there is always a but, why did they present everyone in nice well fitting clothes, the woman with perfect hair and makeup etc and the men in shirt jacket and ties, even later in the film they look quite comfortable with ties and jackets on etc etc, it isn’t until things start to get uncomfortable both physically and mentally that anyone starts to dress down.

This shelter needs a 45 inch flatscreen TV, robot servants, toilets and showers and bathtubs, bunks, a kitchen, and drones outside the shelter.
