Doesn't work on an 8GB Pi. This is a known bug by Ubuntu. It may well work on a 2GB or 4GB system.
Good to know - pinned
Did you manage to get it to work on a 8GB Pi? I too, am on the same boat
@@SabadoProject I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet to test.
@@SabadoProject You can do a workaround of disabling Wayland by logging in with Ubuntu-Xorg and installing x11vnc. I wasn't able to get the "Allow Locked" gnome extension working with Firefox or chromium (since chrome doesn't support arm64 yet) but I was able to create an init script for x11vnc that loads it up on boot and keeps it running in the background so I didn't need this extension after all. I strongly recommend using vnc over ssh though since this makes it much more secure. Obviously this whole method is much more involved than the easy way of using Remote Desktop in this video but I just wanted to let you know that it is possible to have a Remote Desktop on an 8GB Pi running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Took me a while and lots of troubleshooting to get it working but glad I got it done now!
No basis and no information
The best tutorial I've seen of this topic, thank you so much!
This also works on Mac OS with Ubuntu 22.04. This works straight away (after losing many hours trying everything.) Thank you so much! (In the VNC client I did have to turn encryption off!)
Thanks a lot for sharing !!!. Screen locking was terminating Remmina sessions to my remote ubuntu servers ( 22.04 and 21.10 as well) for weeks, I am happy that I found your solutions and this stupid problem is finally resolved !!
This solution works for both VNC and RDP (Please note that Ubuntu 22.04 accepts RDP connections a well so in Remmina one can choose RDP protocol)
Thank you! I have tried to setup remote access to Ubuntu a few times in different ways and it never worked, don't know if Jammy Jellyfish made it easier or what but this video got me pointed in the right direction and it's now working.
OMG. That's the fastest video I have watched to get what I want. Thanks man :)
I liked the video, commented it and subscribed. without you telling me to.
LOL :))
Thanks, I hope it was helpful.
The best tutorial. On point. Thank you
Thanks mate, you really made my day. Hats off
Jolly good video 👍
Gnome extension for *lock-able remote session* is an awesome tip --- THANKS!
Kindest regards.
Omg thanks you so much for this! It works perfectly!
Thanks exactly what I was looking for.
This does only work when you have logged in at least once on the computer physically, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of *remote* desktop. I could not find any solution for this problem that actually works.
You save me man! Thank you! It works on Ubuntu 22 lts.
Worked with me. Thanks!
Awesome tutorial!!!
Working flawlessly on 8GB RAM Pi 5 :)
Thank you so much!
worked like a charm for me............
Very helpful Video amazing
Nice, but wish it could work for connecting after reboot... Can't believe there is no simple option to set up a fully remote workstation without disabling encryption
man and it was so easy :::) why didnt i watched your video earlier, before 2hrs wasted
Great trick, works for me
Extension removed from website
How did you install the extension?
Thanks, the solution worked for the lock screen.
But what should we do for the log in step! After every power outage or every reset, connection will be lost and cannot be recovered due to log in problem. SSH is working but RDP does not!
I have same, try to use auto login
@@arvydasjac8160 I tried, did not work...
thnx my friend
Wich client do you use ? I try with Real VNC but I have a black sreen
I have noticed if my Ubuntu restarts, I have to go into settings on the machine and put in a password to unlock the remote desktop setting again...
When I reunlock the setting..it also changes my password
Is there a way around this?... So upon reboot..it will just let me remote in again (I'm guessing gnome may be the answer?)
Thank you very much for this tutorial. Works flawless. Just one thing... there's still a problem with the Remote Desktop which is it must be connected to a monitor or the build-in Remote Desktop will not work. How can we make it work without a monitor?
i've not needed to myself but you can fake a monitor being attached - have a look for thinks like 'dummy monitor xorg' online. and for a full terminal based experience theres xrdp - but it's kinda a different thing to what i'm showing here.
Thanks very clear. A question though. Can you unhook the monitor etc from the linux machine as well and still use that remote or vnc connections?
That depends on the hardware in the machine, older machines with VGA i've been able to do this one, some newer machines that only have DP or HDMI i've struggled to.
they have dumby hdmi plugs that trick the computer into thinking a display is hooked up. that may work?
Will this allow me to connect to my ubuntu server and see all the programs i left open? even if the server is still logged in?
Thanks! How do you change the resolution when using RDP? And how do you get the sound to play on the Windows machine? Would appreciate your help!
Nvm I solved it by using teamviewer and connecting a second screen.
Anyone having an issue where you get in with the RDP, I can even get my mouse to move on screen, but it doesn't let me click on anything? I was literally watching the target computer in the other room as I was doing it, there was zero response. Couldn't even see the mouse moving (not sure if that's a thing). Like I said, I was in, I could see the desktop, but I couldn't do anything but move the mouse.
WOW crazy good tutorial. Speed is top, just needed to pauze some times, but prefer that than having to skip! I had 1 issue though on Windows 11: I can not remote control with RDP, I can with TigerVNC, but would prefer the RDP because of the automatic scaling! Any idea? With Remmina on Linux I have the same issue with RDP, not with VNC.
sounds like there might be an issue with the server side of the RDP, not really sure on the problem, but i would probably start by loading in the live CD/ISO and seeing if the issue also happens from that.
@@CrazyLogic Ok, I'll try that later, VNC is working. But I seem to have 1 real issue left: after a restart no VNC connection is allowed. Apparently everything works if you login once. Where you able to solve that? I tried autologin but that did not work either: it is asking to login for the keyring. Probably that is the main reason for the issue.
@@CrazyLogic I got that to work, by using following command: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.remote-desktop.rdp view-only "false"
you can check on the status of the gnome remote desktop by using: grdctl status
what about the auto login prolem? If you set Ubuntu to auto login an account. It sets the remote desktop password to some random password. Auto login has to be disabled in order to maintain the set password. But there's another problem. Remote desktop does not start until someone has logged in to the system. So if you system reboots and is sitting at the login page, you can't remote into it and if you set auto login, it sets a random password. So how the hell are we supposed to get this working the way we want it to. Either auto login with a consistent password or be able to login in through VNC/RDP?
Did you find out?
Thanks for the video. Could you add some more information on how to setup XRDP through SSL if you only have SSL access to a bare metal server and want to access it through RDP as well?
Not really an area i know much about so not something i should make a video about. sorry.
@@CrazyLogic ok, thanks for the reply.
hey. i do that all the steps and still not connected. my two devices connected to same net work but one with usb thereting with mobile wifi and other with lan. and i cant connect to it. in other hand i want to use that machine for downloading at night with another network. what is you suggestion?
Thanks for the video, I got it working, but unfortunately from a Mac, I get a black screen on both vnc connection and ms-rd.
I never imagined trying anything other than a headless docker container, which I've been using for many years. This was quite a surprise to me. Any idea how the performance of this compares to a vm in VirtualBox or QEMU?
urm, not really sure i can say without more details. remoting into a box is quite different from running a VM. they're usually used for different purposes
RDP goes over the network. It can't be faster than directly accessing the VM through the host software. If your running VM Ware server or KVM then RDP is a lot faster than VNC.
However, there's still a problem with the Remote Desktop which is it must be connected to a monitor or the build-in Remote Desktop will not work.
yep - this is pretty common, but if you're on server hardware they often have VGA which you can configure without having a physical device on, or you can use a dummy plug for HDMI/DP. It's cheap and alot easier than forcing the software in my experience.
How many numbers user can connect through vnc at a time
Thanks.
My username keeps reseting each time i restart the ubuntu. Is there a way to have a fixed password? Ta
When setting up sharing I keep getting this message "An application wants access to the keyring "Default keyring", but it is locked"
I have no idea what password it wants and I don't recall setting anything to do with keyrings, whatever they are 😞
How can I make a remote desktop from any PC to my Ubuntu 22.04 if it does not have a monitor?
Hi, how to be with changed password after iach reboot?? Is it can be fixed?
This seems to work until you reboot the machine, then you can't get back in until someone logs in. I even tried the auto-login option - no dice.
Can i access it in ubuntu not windows ?
I usually install x11vnc and use that one
The problem I have is, whenever I try to use Teamviewer, it won't connect unless I enable Share every time. Why is that? Is there a way to keep the Share option enabled permanently?
The reason I use Teamviewer is because Remote Desktop is so slow and laggy!
It'll be a security setting within team viewer client.... I remember having set it on a ras pi, but that was a while back now.
Is there any way to get RDP Session in full screen?
I've never it seen it scale like on Windows.
I followed your guide. But when i go to settings for the remote desktop it shows different options. Why? Yes its 22.04
It’s in “Settings > System > Desktop Sharing” now
Does not work for me; Win10 Remote Desktop fails to connect...but
RealVNC does connect properly.
running Ubuntu 22.04 LIVE-from-USB
this is probably something certificate related with RDP. try installing, then wen prompted accept the cert.
Which version of RealVNC did you use? Mine won't connect properly.
this solution is no longer working?
even I tried to turn it on, it will always switch off by itself, does anyone have the same issue please?
I finally "sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extension-manager" and am able to make it persistently on. However, it still doesn't work. I'm using Ubuntu 22.04, gnome-shell --version = 42.5. Tried to use Real VNC viewer to connect to that server with the screen locked. Return "The connection closed unexpectedly"
Could anyone help please?
what if you dont' have a Static IP?
thanks!
Things get a bit trickier - if you want to access by IP you'll need to keep finding it or, make it static. OR you look into using the DNS name.
ubuntu does not have a legacy vnc feature anymore, and also everytime i do try and remote into the damn thing i get a blank screen, even with logging out as people had tried to suggest, didnt work
what display manager are you using?
@@CrazyLogic haven't changed it so whatever Ubuntu has as default
@@Cinnamon_Shaey and that will be the problem. Im pretty sure I cover moving to lightdm in the video.
@@CrazyLogic well i followed the tutorial to a tee and still that result
It's specifically for a headless application so I will not have a screen attached
looks like it still require the user is logged in first.....
why would installing a browser extentin have anything to do with remote desktop at all. this make no sense.
it's a helper extension to install the actual gnome part underneath the hood, from the web browser.
I must say you are working at a breakneck speed, I still do not know what you have done ??
I try not to waste anyone's time. On CZcams you can slow and pause the video to follow along.
