#WatchItPlayed #BoardGames #Tutorial - Hry
I found the rulebook for this game to be very lacking in details and the information wasn't presented in a way that made sense to me, we were really struggling to understand the game based on the book, so we came to CZcams and your video made the game very easy to understand. Thanks!
+Callahan09 So nice of you to say - thank you for checking out the video and I hope you have a great time playing!
Yea you can definitely tell the rule book is translate from another language or written in english by a non english speaker.
@@Svergara1honestly, even in its original language (French), the rulebook isn't very clear. Thank god for Rodney, even years later!
Just opened 20 minutes ago…the rulebook really struggles laying out where the real “gameplay” is
Interesting game. It"s nice to see someone reminding people, even if only in a game, about the WWs and its nice to see someone reminding people that war isn't always about guns and bullets.
alaskankare I like my run and gun games as much as the next person, but I share your opinion here.
This is beautiful - the artwork and the theme. It really hits different when games (either digital or tabletop) have deep themes/stories that make it so immersive to players to experience than just watching/reading about them.
You're the man Rodney. I don't know what I'd do without your videos, now I can enjoy my Christmas gift. Happy New Year
+Joshua Jones Nice gift! Have a great time playing Joshua :)
Such a great tutorial, you even provide some hints in what to do in a few situations. Great tutorial indeed.
Glad you liked it Rogerio!
I finally picked up this game and I was pretty upset to hear about Tignous's death. May his brilliance shine on.
His legacy continues in our gaming circles now.
Damn... Talk about a serious tone... had no idea that one of the people died after making this game... My condolences to CMON and their families on the artist's and his colleagues deaths. RIP.
This video explanation was absolutely perfect. I mean, really, I don't think anyone puts together "how to play" vids better than this man. And Rodney, I liked some of the thematic narrative you wove into the rules explanation...nice touch.
+J Young So nice of you to say - that means a lot. Thanks for taking the time to learn the game with me!
are you a professional teacher/trainer/coach? often i start watching board game review videos and they end up losing my attention halfway through... but all your videos make learning games so easy and i always end up watching them through the end lol
+Neil Sabo That's very kind of you to say. No I am not any of those things you list, but I suppose I know the method I find that works when I'm learning a game, so I just try to use that method and hope it works for others as well.
Watch It Played what is your job/profession?
This channel has been my full time job for about 3 years now, and I've been working on it for 5. Before that I was with the Federal Government of Canada.
@@WatchItPlayed I guess you are a professional teacher/trainer/coach, and have been since this channel became your fulltime job :). Thanks for the great work coach.
Valiant Hearts, the board game! :D
Same theme. While Valiant hearts its story driven this its very abstract.
that was exactly my thinking haha, I made a playlist for this game and it has a lot of the Valiant Hearts soundtrack on it
I was looking for a quick tutorial for this since I just got it on Amazon's sale. I was confused watching other videos but you made it so clear and concise. please keep up the awesome work! I really like your videos
Thanks so much - glad you liked the video and found it helpful!
As always, excellent job. Never ceases to amaze that what ever game I'm looking up... YOU'VE DONE IT! LOVE IT!! You are much more pleasant to listen to than... other game reviewers... I'll just leave that there. I was on the fence with this game. I saw it in a Barnes n Noble a while back and it has been stuck in my head. I'm definitely getting this as a stocking stuffer "from Santa". Thanks again... Keep 'em coming.
You must have been a good boy :) Hope you have a great time with the game Wade and thanks for the kind comment :)
Hi Rodney! Perfect video, as usual, thank you very much! It always amazes me how easily and yet in detail you show the rules of every game. I fell in love with this game a long time ago, but only now, through your presentation, everything has become clear. Keep up the good work, you are the best! :) Best wishes from Hungary. :)
You're very kind - thanks for the nice words, and so glad you've been enjoying the videos!
Rodney... this series has really made such a difference! I'm not the sort of fellow who "reads stereo instructions" so well. Watching your videos is very uplifting... you break through the confusing bits and pave the way for everyone to understand the ebb and flow of the game. I liked the idea of "The Grizzled" and bought it as soon as I could... also bought "At your orders" as soon as I could. The depth and strategy of this game makes you work hard, which is how a good and challenging game should go. I wouldn't be too far wrong in saying that you and Rahdo are industry standard in terms of learning a game. I would include Stuka Joe in this group as well. Thanks for doing so much reading and making it easy for the rest of us.
Jim, thank you for the very kind words - it means a lot to know the videos are enjoyed and useful. Glad you are enjoying the game!
Thanks for another great vid! This is one I'll definitely keep in mind. Also, I'm really happy the funding for season 5 is going so well! Can't wait for more in the future.
Otherspersons Me too, I'm excited to think I'll get to do this for another year!
As always thank you for the video! Picked this up at GenCon and I can't wait to play it.
boardgamecloset Enjoy!!
Not only did you give your clear and concise explanation but you did so with the appropriate dignity and solemnity which the subject demanded. Well done on all counts.
Thank you kindly!
That was a great explanation of the game - easy to follow, well thought out to show different scenario's, and good table layout - thanks Rodney
Very kind of you to say Dan!
I have used you so many times to learn games. Finally subscribed keep up the great work and thanks for the knowledge
Very glad to have you with us Anthony!
It's impressive how you explain game rules Rodney, thanks for your amazing videos!
Thanks so much for the kind words Juan!
Thanks as always Rodney! I was like wow small book this should be easy to learn, then i find out how unclear my rules were and gave up and found out you had a watch it played. Almost to the point of not buying games unless you do a breakdown of the rules! Kidding of course but it is always great when you do have one for a game I buy!
+bhill1024 So glad the video was a help and I hope you have a great time playing!
Thanks for the review!
A great coop! Can't wait to get a copy and play!
Mira WeetNie Glad you enjoyed it Mira!
Your Videos are the best!!!! So great, hope i can support you soon on Kickstarter
+Tabletophunter Thanks for that!
I'm a bit late to the party (or war I should say) but you're incredible at teaching! This is the best game tutorial I've ever seen. I watched the entire thing without getting bored or distracted once. With the written instructions, it was so difficult for me to follow along, but your video made it so simple. Thank you. 😊
That is wonderful feedback - and hey, you're never too late to a gaming party. In fact I just played this game two days ago :)
Great episode Rodney. This has quickly become my new favorite game. I've played it many times, but have only won once. There were a few rules that I apparently had wrong. I didn't know you could remove a trauma/phobia with a speech token. I also played where the speech doesn't benefit the speech giver but was told it does. I was glad to see that clarified. I absolutely love this game. Thanks for your time and efforts.
Scott LeBlanc
+Scott Leblanc Heya Scott! (With a speech you can remove a phobia/trauma from your hand - not if it's in play). Very pleased I could help clarify a couple points. I've only won once as well - finally, just two days ago.
You must be an angel Rodney, I was really looking forward to this game, and then all of a sudden you made this video. Thanks a bunch. P.S USA loves you
Ryan Heckel Thank you Ryan (and USA!)
Rodney, great video! Thank you so much. I got this game at Gencon and it is a beautiful elegant game soaked in theme. I really like it. I cant wait for your run through
Ryan Mahon So glad you were able to get a copy Ryan, thank you!
Just got it for $13 on AMAZON! TY Rodney You rock! And I got to meet you finally when you were at a Con here in Texas a couple years ago!
Hope you have a great time playing and glad we were able to meet!
Darn it Rodney... another game I have to buy now because of your outstanding How to Play!
+Capt Carry On Thanks for checking it out Captain!
Thank you for these great videos!!!
You're very welcome!
I bought this game at the superb Great War Museum in Perone on a visit to the battlefields with my 12 year old son last year, my great grandfather survived the battle of the Somme and I was lucky enough to know him. We bought the game based on the artwork, but sadly couldn't get to grips with the gameplay through the instructions. This is a brilliant tutorial, really clear instructions and engaging throughout, you really have succeeded in simplifying what could easily be an over complicated and confusing video. I'm very grateful and am looking forward to sitting down with my son and a couple of his friends and playing this quite unique game.
Thanks so much for the kind feedback on the video Adrian - very glad to know you found it helpful, and I hope you enjoy the game with your son!
Really excellent rule explanation, and a great coop game. The rules make such great sense with the theme of the game. Thanks!
Very glad you liked the video :)
I'm looking forward to this playthrough. If I just read the description of this game online I would have dismissed it but it actually looks kind of interesting after watching you explain it.
Jake Davidson Thanks for taking the time to look into it a little further!
Thanks for the explanation. It was very helpful :)
Very nice to hear! Have a great time playing :)
Very nice video as usual and very respectful to the theme and the artist.
Thanks for checking out the video!
thank you very much! just got this game for christmas and now i get it way better than After reading the instructions
+kokokoko shooshooboop Great to hear - have a great time playing! And Merry Christmas!
Great instructions. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice to know you liked them!
thanks, bud. you did a great job of explaining the game
Thank you - glad you liked it!
Awesome video, Rodney! Already want to play again...
Brady Sadler Thanks Brady - and for sharing the video on Facebook with such kind enthusiasm!
Thanks for another great tutorial!
You're very welcome Jason - glad you liked it!
Excellent tutorial as always.
Thanks Decker!
Great overview, thank you
You're very welcome Austin!
This was great I thought this game was going to be too confusing for me but you changed that thank you!
Very glad to hear the video helped!
Extremely well explained. TY.
Thanks Brent, glad you liked it!
Somehow I missed this at gencon. Dang it, thought I got them all! Thanks for this one Rodney.
Joshua Davis Not surprising you missed it. Gen Con was a zoo!
Nice review
Love the game! Great way to teach the game and strategies involved. I also liked seeing you on gamewire's channel teaching the expansion. However, whatever happened to the game play video of the grizzled you mentioned at the end?
Didn't end up happening. May happen in the future.
Finally got my hands on a copy of this game :) This tutorial was definitely a reason for why I wanted to play this game. Great work as usual.
I have been playing it with my co-workers at lunch break and I tell them to watch this before hand so we can get it going more rapidly. Basically it's just shuffle and deal even with new players :)
I do have a couple of rules questions thou that maybe you can help me with:
Scenario: Witdrawal with the Clumsy card
GIVEN player A have the Clumsy hardknock ("After your withdrawal, you must draw a Trial card and play it")
AND player A also have a Trauma ("Let's say Night")
WHEN player A withdraws
THEN player A's Trauma card is no longer in play when the Trial card is drawn
Or is it
THEN player A's Trauma card is STILL in play when the Trial card is drawn
We interpreted it as "no longer in play" but there was confusion :)
And then there are a few hardknocks that totally contradicts each other:
Fragile - "Other players cannot withdraw as long as they have any cards in hand"
Hardheaded - " You cannot withdraw as long as you have 2 or more cards in hand"
Prideful - "You may withdraw only if your hand is empty, or if you are the last one still in the Mission"
all of these contradicts with Fearful - "On your turn, you must withdraw if 2 identical Threats are active"
Which one takes precedence ? Fearful or any of the other three?
Thanks again for being awesome
Glad you liked the tutorial! Good questions here. I usually defer players to the publisher when it comes to specific card interaction effects (too many variables for me to try to determine, and I'm not an official source :) ). That said, I'll tell you how I would rules it: The wording says "after" you withdraw, add a trial card. Since the card is placed in the common area "after" you withdraw, I'd say the player A's fear of night is no longer a consideration for the other players.
The hardknock contradictions is actually clarified in the rule book, and you'll also find it in this video :) Check the description of the video, towards the bottom, and you'll find an index, with a timestamp link you can click that will take you to the rules for resolving hard knock conflicts.
All the best and I hope you have a good time playing!
Thanks for the swift reply.
Found the rules clarifications.
Leaving the relevant clarification here for future reference :)
* In case of conflict between Hard Knocks:
- on the same player, the priority goes to the oldest one. (So don't shuffle them around after they are assigned to you ;))
- on different players, those from the player currently playing are applied first.
You are the man !!!! Thank you very much
You bet!
This looks really good!
Carl Frodge Thanks for checking it out Carl.
You knocked this one outta the park yet again Rodney, thank you fro the video. Got a quick question though, I noticed you sounded a little different is that a bit of GenCon Hangover I hear or were you just a lil tired?
Ryan Diaz Not tired, but had lost my voice while at Gen Con, which was still lingering. I just didn't want to delay shooting any longer. Gotta keep to a strict schedule :)
Great video! I would REALLY LOVE to see this game played by the hilarious people of Watch It Played. Will this ever be possible?
No plans to currently, but it's possible in the future.
Awesome how to video!
Thanks so much David!
Hi Rodney, loved the explanation! In the end you are talking about doing a full game play video of The Grizzled in future episodes. Where can I find this?
Did not end up recording that play through. Time got away from me.
Ah, thanks for this video, Rodney. We were given a demo of the game at Gencon, but many of the rules were left out leaving us (and others I talked to) a bit sour on the game. Knowing the full rule-set makes it seem much more enjoyable. Looking forward to your run-through.
vrava A pleasure to share! I saw a few mistakes in demos being given as well, but to be fair, I played the game lots and re-read the rules a few times. Hoping our video can help crystallize things!
This game just moved from my "curious" list to my "grab it when I find it" list - thanks, Rodney!
Mike Sprague My pleasure Mike!
This is a very well presented how-to.
+Kindlesmith70 Thank you Kindle!
hi Rodney, It sounds like a beautiful and sad game. Great instructional video as usual!
Facurdo Thank you for checking it out Facurdo.
Thank you!
You're welcome Beckett!
Happy Fathers Day
Great presentation
Thanks
Thank you kindly!
That is a beautifully well-thought out game
***** Thanks for checking out the video Evan!
Hi Rod!
Are you planning to do a video about the expansion "At your Orders"?
It would be nice to have a good explanation about the Missions. Mainly the "hard" missions like "Gastroenteritis", "Mustard Gas", etc. Unfortunately, those cards are not clear...
And, keep the great work! I watch your videos from Brazil! :-)
Hey, thanks for the interest. I avoid pre-announcing games we are going to cover in case my schedule changes (I don't like to disappoint).
The timing of this video is kismet. I just had the honour of winning a copy of the Grizzled at GenCant, now I will know how to play it :D
Madbonna1 Congrats on winning the game :)
Thanks a Lot!!!!
You're very welcome!
I always wanted to get this, and now I know the story of the artist, I want it even more.
paganeagle2001 Thanks for checking out the video!
Wow, this game is kind of...sad, but interesting. As per usual, you made a great job demonstrating this. I'm not sure how this differ from the Armistice edition but I'd love to have it, especially when I heard how actually engaging the game is in a kind of poignant but anecdotal way.
Again, this is such a clean video, especially amazing because it's six years ago! 😅 Thanks Sir!
The Armistice edition gives you an ongoing campaign to play through, but it's built on the same general mechanics.
Gotta get this game
Did you get a chance to try it?
Hi Rodney, I love your idea of working a narrative element into playing each card. I wonder, how do you work the lucky charms into the story? I would love to see a play through with all players invested in the narrative variant. How about a playthrough using the Duo variant in the expansion At Your Orders? I know it's an 'older' game now, but consider it! :D
I'd really enjoy playing this one as part of a live play through once we get our video and audio sync issues sorted out.
Huzzah!
Hi Rodney
It's been a while since the video. Did you decide not to do a playthrough of this? Great quality as always. Amazed that 3 people have given a thumbs down!!! Some people are strange.
Everyone likes different things :) This one was a bit tricky as it needs 3 players, and that's a little harder to schedule. We may do it during our live gaming marathon.
Cant wait to play this . Im gonna use a die to roll for mission intensity should make it interesting . Great vid like always .
+BigBillyw85 Thank you!
Great video Rodney, thanks!
What's your take on the following stuation: The peace card is visible, only one player has a card remaining in his hand. He plays it, but it's his fourth hard knock.Do players win immediately or do they have to see whether in the support phase the can get rid of two of the hard knocks and then win?
Michael Wißner You check for victory after the Support phase - no easy outs :)
Hi excelent tutorial !, which 2 player way is better? the one that cames with the base game or with the expansion ?
Hey Leandro, I tend to avoid offering suggestions on preferences, because I don't feel confident that I can say for you, which you'll like better.
Like the new intro
thejcpbeats Me too - Chaz did a great job of adding some nice extra touches to it :)
the "Gen Con effect" on your voice actually sort of fits really well with the game :P
Need an At Your Orders video :)
We'll see if we get a chance :)
Amazing explanation, I just bought it and the person who sold it to me just failed in explaining it XD, THANKS! :D
+Odice Blackjacker Glad this was helpful Odice!
Thank you so much Rodney! QQ on the rule for Speeches: you mentioned that the speech does not affect the player giving the speech. ~12:30. If the speach-giving player has the suggestion card(s) in his hand.... example... no whistles have been seen in play... the speech-giver has them so he calls out the symbol for Call to battle (whistles)... Can the speech giver also discard a 'whistle' card same as other players?
Just want to make sure I understand this, so I'm going to word it a little differently. If I'm using a speech token, then I will not get to discard anything as part of the speech-giving action. Thematically, my speech is about inspiring others, not inspiring myself. Does that answer it?
Great , I will always go first in this game, Damn Italian genes!!!!! Good job Rodney!!!
Pete Shirey Hahah :)
***** Rodney, I'm glad you decided to do this video. The Grizzled was my surprise hit at Gen Con - my buddy picked it up, basically sight-unseen, while standing in line with me while I got Blood Rage. The Grizzled has such a unique, well-conceived, and important theme. I'll likely pick up my own copy soon - I think it would go over well with some history enthusiast non-gamer friends and family. And I'll make them watch you teach it!
Still a favorite of mine - you try the campaign version?
@@WatchItPlayed Not yet. Want to, but there are just too many great games.
@@rgriffin19 Ain't that the truth!
Good day sir...may i ask why you have yet to post the gameplay run through of this game??
My schedule didn't allow for it at the time, and then enough time passed that I didn't get back to it.
Thanks Rodney. Looks like a very interesting game. Unfortunately too much hidden information that would make it not so good as a solo game.
Kevin Erskine Nope, definitely not a solo game.
Interesting take on a co-op - a little bit of Hanabi, but with a point to it :-)
Neil Blaiberg People will probably feel the theme of this game a little moreso :)
Well it actually has a theme so probably 😃
I couldn't follow the 3 min video explanation of the game but this made it clear
Very glad this video was helpful David!
So after the first round which is 3 intensity, would it be beneficial to jut use level 1 intensity and pass out only 1 card to everyone? or is there some sort of flaw that can happen with that ?
If you only deal out 1 card per player, then you won't be going through the deck as quickly, which will likely catch up with you later. It's a bit hard to explain, but it quickly makes sense in practice :)
I played this tonight, after watching this video for the rules. We went 1 and 9 for W:D!!! So much fun.
+Cowsablanca Glad you enjoyed it :)
+Watch It Played Are you going to be at Gencon this year? I'm a local, and would love to meet you and your son (kicked in to MasMorra and am totally buying the mini based off your son!).
+Cowsablanca Thanks for backing the mini :) I will be going to Gen Con, most likely - but Luke won't be. Very expensive to fly there, and I keep pretty ridiculous hours while I'm there - not good for a kid :)
+Watch It Played well, if you want a nice, home cooked meal while you are here or anything, or even just a snazzy drive around town, let me know :)
+Cowsablanca Very kind of you! To be frank, I rarely eat at regular times, and have a hard time scheduling things, as my schedule has to be fit around the often unpredictable things that go on at the convention, but I hope we run into each other and at least get a chance to geek out a little about the show and what we've been up to.
Quick question, can a lucky charm remove a trauma/phobia or does it only apply to cards in No Man's Land?
Just in No Man's Land.
This game looks like quite a different and intriguing experience.
CrystalblueMage I look forward to sharing the game play with you!
Idk if you are still answering questions. But in trials deck (the one to peace), after declaring how much cards each player gets, if the decks gets emptied but the last player who draw had the card where you need to take two more cards. Does he/she draws two cards from the other deck or doesn't draw more at all?
They don't draw more
@@WatchItPlayed thanks for the answer!!!
I think we would have won that game if we didn't draw those cards...
Well, for the next time now we know.
Hi Rodney, thanks for the video! Quick rules question. At the end of a mission, if all players have played the cards in their hands so 0 cards are left (but there are still cards on the peace stack - I forgot what that stack is called), do you still add a minimum of 3 cards to the peace stack from the monument stack? In your example one player had 1 card left, but I'm wondering if the rule changes for 0 cards?
+David Seidner Hey David, you always move at least 3 cards to the peace deck, even if the players have no cards left in hand.
***** Thanks for the quick reply!!
Do you think you'll ever do a full play through of this?
I avoid pre-announcing videos until I'm at the recording stage, just in case my schedule changes (I don't like to disappoint).
Nice video. But I've got 1 question. If the deck is empty and we don't have cards in our hands but 1 player has 4 hard knocks, will we win if he got more support tokens than others. So he will just heal himself
Yes, you don't check for having too many hard knocks until "after" support has been resolved.
Are you going to do a video for the expansion...or have you already?
+Kentershaw pcm Thanks for the interest! I actually collaborated with GameWire recently to talk about it here: czcams.com/video/1UXaSwPQU74/video.html
We're having trouble figure out what we can or can't communicate. I see we can't make suggestions on which support tiles to use. What about suggesting the use of speech cards or using a good luck charm, or how to use their support win, etc.
Ryan Bui I think you'll want to agree as a group how much chatting you want to do. I will sometimes talk out loud about strategies ideas, but I personally try to avoid leading people with suggestions.
Question: does the game immediately end when a player places a 4th Hard Knock card to their character or is the team given a chance to remove it during Withdraw/Support at the end of the Mission?
Hey iGen, I try to answer all questions, but if the answer is in the video itself (which it is here), then I have to ask you to watch the video, or check the description (where you'll find a clickable index)
Is a hard knock considered one lightning bolt, or one card? I ask because I believe in a demo I saw of this, a hard knock with 2 lightning bolts came up. So would that mean it would only take 2 other Hard knock cards to kill that soldier, since that would total 4 lightning bolt symbols?
+Nathan Norton Correct. The penalty of that Hard Knock is that it counts as 2 wounds. So that and 2 other hard knocks and the soldier would be defeated if they still have those wounds by the end of the support phase.
19:10 You said there is a minimum of 3 cards transferred. What if they had no threats in their hands? Do they still draw extra cards?
Yep, 3 is always transferred. For example, if the players are collectively holding 1 card (or even zero cards), 3 will still be dealt over.
When the mission fails, the morale drops right ? Meaning we have add the total number of cards from the hands to the trial pile. But only when the mission fails, correct?
If it succeeded there's no need to enter need morale drop ?
The Morale drops at the end of each round.
I don’t know if you still check comments, but I just got this game and am unsure how much you can discuss the trial cards in your hand. Can I give suggestions to other soldiers on cards to lucky charm?
Hey Luke - yep, still check all the messages :)
You are not meant to discuss the trials in your hand, or give clues to what you might be holding, or make suggestions for what a player "should play".
When are you posting more ashes game play through?
Roscoe S As soon as it is ready. Should be Monday.
Does playing the 3rd same symbol end the round immediately as someone may have a lucky charm removing one of the cards.
yuitry1 You only get 1 action per turn, so on the turn that you add the 3rd symbol, the game ends, so you won't get to the next players turn who could possibly use the lucky charm (which also requires a full turn). Hope that helps!
