  • Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the weaponry of Resident Evil 4, including the powerful Striker shotgun, the distinctive Red 9 pistol, and the ridiculous Infinite Rocket Launcher.
Resident Evil 4 saw Capcom’s horror franchise venture into the action genre for the first time and gave players access to an arsenal of unique weapons, including the TMP submachine gun, the H&K VP70M handgun, and the Thompson M1A1, known in-game as the Chicago Typewriter.
In the latest video in the Firearm Expert Reacts series , Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of Resident Evil 4, and compares them to their real-life counterparts.

A bit late, but I figured I'd add that one thing I also like aside from that general attitude is that he talks about gaming trends and tropes, and how that plays into the way weapons are depicted versus how they actually work. Like when he mentions how the way they reduce damage for SMGs versus pistols isn't accurate, but also discusses how it's understandable to do so to keep gameplay balanced so the pistols don't become irrelevant.
Instead of just saying "this is wrong," he usually goes with "this isn't accurate, but it's fun and here's why I think they do it that way."

For example, the Red 9's bolt moves slowly in-game... so the player can see the animation at the in-game framerate.
Another example is that sight apertures in video games are usually depicted as much bigger than those on real-world firearms. Thing is, if you made them real-world accurate they'd be unusable in-game.

The first weapon is Leon's own custom handgun called the Silver Ghost. It's not really meant to be real, it's just a bunch of parts thrown together, they just wanted him to have a cool US secret agent looking side arm. It's actually in canon stated to be fully customized by a guy named Joseph Kendo. He also made Chris, and Jill's custom Beretta 92Fs he named the "Samurais Edge". The games weapon designer stated that it was completely fictional, and claims that he designed the handgun himself with no individual base model, but admits that the USP was a source of aesthetic inspiration.

I appreciate that he actually understands a little bit more about the way games are developed and isn't just dryly pointing out things that are unrealistic. Everything he had to say about the actual guns and their translation into the game by the developers was super interesting, too. Excellent review!

I appreciate this gun expert is also familiar with game design quirks like normally spraying a mess of bullets from an smg is quite lethal but he acknowledges why have pistols at all when you have the TMP in RE4

It genuinely gives me anxiety when the person playing isn't running up to kick stunned enemies.

He's trying to show off the guns, not Leon's fabulous kicks.

Nice to see someone that doesn't just rag in inaccuracies, but understands they're there for game balance.

great content! several pistols are missing though. Black Tail, Broken Butterfly, Hand cannon, to name a few. I really enjoyed using Black Tail, a magnificent gun in the game when fully upgraded.

One of the greatest weapon analysis to the game and great way to analyze it with game scene

They overlooked the rattail, the punisher, the PSG-1, and broken butterfly. 😥 😔

Trust me Jonathan, we would love the RPG to be so realistically depicted that it actually kills Ashley

In the slowed down footage of the protector being reloaded, it looks like he winds it a small amount just before putting his hand back on the foregrip

I would pay a paid subscription to see him play through some of these games, a let's play with running guns commentary as he find new ones. I suspect I am not alone in this feeling

And quickly, before a shitty remake removes every good thing about it and becomes the new go-to version of RE4 that Capcom releases on every new system

I only subscribed to GameSpot because of this series. This guy is such a pleasure to listen to, its like getting a nice treat from that one guy you don't often see in your feed but you get so happy when he appears!
