DJ Grooves will always be the canon villain to me. He's set up to be the underdog in the competition, subverting your expectations that he's the good guy. He's outwardly friendly to Hat Kid, but is really just a master of emotional manipulation. His movies are fun personified, but secretly are just engineered to maximize serotonin instead of engaging you with actually good cinematography. And when his facade drops, it genuinely feels like a terrible betrayal. On the flip side, when the Conductor comes to your rescue at the eleventh hour, it shows that even though the Conductor is an insane perfectionist with no social skills, he really has a heart of gold. When the roles are reversed, it falls completely flat. The angry demon bird is evil and the nice friendly bird is good.
Yeah, I can get what you mean there. Though honestly, I would say Grooves' friendly face is an honest one. Yes, he can be a bit crazy in his fight, but I do think that for the most part, he is honest in what he says, and his movies aren't maliciously engineered for serotonin or anything. Yeah he wants to have fun, but more so in a genuine sense, not just profit, he's just not the best at making actual like cinematic movies or anything, just lighthearted fun ones, even if they lack the proper elements. Yeah he wants the trophy, but after so many loses to the conductor, it's not exactly hard to see why he would want it, same for why he may be a bit spiteful about it or something. Plus, honestly, the fight to me, as others have said, kinda feel like you're knocking some sense into him and such, bring back the smiling face people love if that makes any sense.

Hearing 12:50 and seeing a giant kitchen knife being pulled against a small child is such a genuine depiction of depravity; definitely blew me away when I realized a flaming discostar/cartoon penguin did this.
A Hat in Time spent quite a while in development and underwent a lot of changes - I'd estimate that only about 60% of the voice lines made it into the game.
