Love my Tank 300, been on the Fawcett offroad trail in Perth . Just drop tyre pressures for off-road use and there is no bottoming out or anything odd. Its a great vehicle and wherever I go, it attracts a lot of positive attention. Difflocks are superb. Seats are perfect. Everything works as it should.

When I was looking to buy a TANK 300 I reviewed a number of You Tube Channels of which your was one. At the end of the day I placed an order and picked up the Orange Tank last Thursday. For around $50k (for the Ultra) it's fantastic value. I had the dealer replace the standard Michelins with Pirelli A/T Scorpion+ Tyres still on the 18inc Rims as part of the deal. I'd recommend everyone does this. The All Terrains I mean, Brand is up to you.
Initial impressions, Lane assist is indeed useless and is turned off. Steering in Sport mode make feel more than adequate. Size is perfect and storage options great for 3 - 4 people. Rides very well. Handling is what you would expect and is at least on par with my traded vehicle (2019 Cherokee Trailhawk). Styling, love it. Drivetrain very smooth with more than enough power and smooth ZF 8 speed auto. Fuel consumption is high but engine takes regular 91 unleaded. It's not a tow vehicle other than perhaps a 6x4 trailer. Braking performance, fine but your comments noted. Your review is well balanced unlike the AE review IT'S RUBBISH (I Quote). John seems to have a knack for the headline grab to garner in the unsuspecting punter and his review would be more relevant if he had actually driven the car! The AE channel though is unusually entertaining so there's that! The state of Schroder's Cat is indeed an enigma wrapped in a riddle. In conclusion does the TANK meet it's design brief, for me yep it's an 8/10. (10/10 value) It's no sports car but then my 2014 Boxster S meets the brief on that score.

Need to run it in for 1 - 2k before taking off road but this thing just shouts off road ability, straight out of the box (within its design brief). I really don't see where it fails if you consider it's targeted market?

You may have just smashed a big arse nail on the head there, Michelin tyres are original equipment, I wonder what the heavy breaking test would be like with average chinese tyres on it? Could this have been a sneaky ay to get a better ANCAP rating with sticky froggy boots on the car.

the most important of any vehicle are it's contact with the road and it's braking ability. If you hit the brakes in this thing you are heading for a potential disaster, One of the reasons that it take so long to stop is because the rear tyres have lost contact with the road. Enough said. And people commenting here think that is a minor thing, I can;t believe that is acceptable at any level.

Credit for GWM limiting the towing capacity to 2500kg, the Prado, Pajero and similar trucks should not tow more that that, even though they are rated higher. BUT....only 400kg payload !! Forget towing your 2.5t van unless you plan to have virtually nothing inside the car apart from the driver and passenger.

I've seen a lot of faux Chinese leather disintegrating after five years, so I doubt this lot will last.

faux Chinese leather disintegrating.. Mazda maztex fake leather made in china but thats ok? It's amazing how people blame china and not the person importing the stuff. My dealings with a Chinese manufacturer was me telling them what I wanted and they asked me how much I wanted to pay, gave me options on quantities and they made the best product at the price I specified, sent me the sample and I accepted it. Works pretty much the same way here in 'straya, you get what you pay for.

① I saw the braking performance tested by the Chinese automotive media. It is almost the same as yours. When braking suddenly, the rear end almost leaves the ground. I think this will affect the friction between the rear wheel and the ground, which also leads to poor braking performance. One of the reasons is that there will also be relatively large safety risks. But considering its suspension structure, I can actually accept this problem because I personally rarely drive so extreme.
② In addition, everyone thinks that the fuel consumption of this car is indeed high, but now there are HEVs to choose from, with stronger power and better fuel consumption results.
③The media is very concerned about the towing performance of this car, but in fact 95% of people can’t tow any vehicle. This is very funny.
④ The assisted driving will turn the steering wheel greatly. This is because it is not set correctly and cannot be considered a problem. The rest is my positive review of it
①The price/performance ratio is very high. The highest configuration of this car is priced at less than US$30,000 in China. I won't spend a single dollar more for the expensive brand premiums of off-road vehicle brands from Japan, the United States, etc.
② It is safe enough. I have seen a lot of tank 300 car accident videos on China’s Tik Tok, and the performance is very good. In fact, with today's technological level, all car manufacturers use similar materials for body structures. I have no superstition about brands.
③Excellent passability and off-road capabilities, its performance on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at high altitudes and harsh road conditions is ten times better than the Prado 2.7 garbage truck.
④The appearance and interior are beautiful, even if its design is very controversial. But beautiful, some very good functions with practicality are indeed worth "copying".

@@v8snail I know what you mean, but the specific "car accident" I'm talking about does not involve using the Tank 300's braking system, such as climbing a steep hillside and rolling down; being rear-ended by a car behind you while waiting at a red light; being hit from the side by a vehicle that ran a red light. etc. These scenarios do not produce what you said is caused by the poor braking performance of the Tank 300.

Theres a great deal being made of this vehicles braking.
    Even Car Expert condemns it.
Right, so in Car Experts stopping distance testing it pulls up as good or better than rivals (even with rear wheels lifted).
    Now this tells me;
    1. Someone has finally fitted brakes that actually grasp a rotor, good god, it's got so much grip its lifting the rear up.
    2. These brakes will clearly stop a ladden vehicle, that's very apparent. That translates to relief for owners, nothing more, so stop condemning it.
As a owner of a very ladden 4WD a primary concern of mine was the braking component. I have addressed this with better rotors & pads, so I'm comfortable with my choice.
This vehicle will not require such action, its ready for its payload to be met without worry.
Now whats being so overlooked here is this Tank had been developed as a hybrid, yes a vehicle that has heavy battery mass, so I strongly suspect the brakes have been designed to stop the hybrid version, the additional battery weight will contribute to stability in hazard stopping as displayed here.
What will also assist stability of the non hybrid version tested here is payload.
    Now to sum up.
No one hazard brakes as displayed here in every day driving.
Should you have to hazard brake as displayed here, the least if your worries will be if your tyres are on the ground, it will be about what am I about to impact with, will it hurt?
Let's take it further. Hazard braking as displayed here will most commonly occur in Roo country. The very least of your worries should be about striking said Roo, just hit the thing, don't create a hazard by attempting avasive action and ending up being the statistic whilst said Roo hopps away due to your curtousity to avoid it.
To some that is inscesative, well it's how it is if you wish to have minimal impact on your life and your passengers.
I'd buy a Tank 300 with total confidence myself.

Thanks for your comment. This all sounds like you're are trying to justify a fundamental issue. With most competitors, these specific issues are not there to justify.
Wheels coming off the ground is unacceptable vehicle behaviour during braking. That's the reality of it. There is no scenario where this is favourable.
To me it suggests the vehicle is not engineered to a reasonable standard. And not to the standard of every other key rival that I've tested in the exact-same way, on the same piece of tarmac.
I can't speak for CarExpert's tests; they use a different piece of tarmac and different testing equipment. I use a Racelogic Vbox Sport running at 20Hz. Our measurements are all conducted on the same piece of tarmac and thus you can compare our results between vehicles that we've tested. Full results database here, and you can sort and search to compare: drivingenthusiast.com.au/performance-data/
(keep in mind some rivals wear all-terrain tyres, which impact stopping distances. This Tank 300 features good Michelin road tyres)
Regarding emergency stops, @AutoExpertJC paints a better picture than me in terms of why emergency braking is important. To be brief, emergencies are usually emergencies; there is no planning time or location that you can predetermine, and you don't get many second chances. That's why this is such an important issue. You can check out his video here: czcams.com/video/5QkUcRSREtI/video.html
Thanks again for your comment and concern.

Ok, now compare your price with an equivalent Toyota or Isuzu of the same age. You’ll find they have held value a bit better. I’m not saying it’s potentially the worst thing about ownership, it’s simply something to consider.
Regarding dealerships, Toyota has around 300 in Australia, Mitsubishi has around 200 and even Isuzu has around 150. In other words, a lot more. Again, just something to consider.

Totally wrong with resale value, with lower priced brands they have less drop in resale compared to the higher priced older brands. You only have to look at sales figures for used haval h6 and jolion in last 2 years and most are selling for same as new or slightly less. I sold my jolion after 20000 kms and only list $600 after 2 years
Also the brake tests you did were way off compared to others that tested this

    • @drivingenthusiastaustralia
      @drivingenthusiastaustralia  Před 8 měsíci +4

      Thanks for your comments.
Like with 0-100 tests, it’s never a good idea to compare different tester results. Because the surface, altitude and weather all impact the figures. It’s like comparing different drag strip results; they are going to be different. The main thing we focus on is testing consistency so you can compare our results with other vehicles we have tested (including going back to the PDriveTV years). We’ve tested around 1000 vehicles on this same piece of tarmac, and 44m does not stack up well against others that we’ve tested in the exact same way with the same Vbox, same tarmac and driver. You can check our full Vbox results data page linked in the description.
At the end of the day, rear wheels coming off the ground is not good, pure and simple. EBD can’t operate properly if two wheels are not in touch with the ground. And, as mentioned, these Michelin tyres are actually quite good. There is no excuse for that long measurement.
As for resale, you say you only lost $600. Many rivals are actually increasing in value compared with their MLP. Also, the small loss you’re experiencing is likely the result of a strong used car market in general, regardless of the brand.
      Hope that helps.
