      Yeah, it happened to me here in Colombia when I worked as a designer in a bookstore and opened the door for a pair of Karens as the clerks were busy.
      They didn't even say "good afternoon" or "hello" but "Ehm.. english only please..." If they had been kind I would've forgotten the thing at least, but as they were so arrogant and almost stomped me, I "politely" told them: "We're in Colombia. Have some manners and please speak in spanish because when we visit your homelands you get mad at us if we don't use you mother language."
      White Karens became angry red Karens and then left, not before making a good purchase of course.

      Because the reporter asked him to as it's a question by his befriended colleagues from Sky UK.
      What's the problem with asking that?
      He does not have to answer, he doesn't even have to be there in fact.

      Exactly! Plus if you're on holiday or working abroad, where's the fun in just speaking English? You might as well just stay back home! Of course we're all different and all learn languages at different paces, but we should at least make the effort to understand and speak another language if we're over there.

    I think the most bizarre thing about the reporter's question is that is was posed in German (by, as far as I can tell, a German reporter). My guess is that if an English reporter had asked Klopp in English, he would have felt obliged to reply in English. But with the reporter conveniently asking in German, it would have felt somewhat silly for Klopp to reply in English.

      @K9hobo productions “ist mir egal“ is the correct form. But it is not polite/formal either.
      "Ist mir egal" and "it is sausage to me" can be compared to the english "I don't care" and "I don't give a drinkers damn".
      There are many other (strange) ways to express that you dont care.
      "Ist mir piepe“ / “ist mir schnurz“ / “bockt nicht“ / ...
      Also: There are many different sayings in german that include sausages but never relate to actual sausages.

      Totally agree and I'm English. I can speak French pretty fluently still, though it's a long time since I've used it, and I also know Spanish and Italian. I actually feel very lucky to have English as my native language, but I don't feel entitled at all. If I was unable to communicate in another country I would at least learn how to politely ask if anyone could help me by speaking English to help me with their own language.

      @Hans Wurst As a native English speaker, I find German hard to speak. At the same time, I do find German more logical than English. So I think it is a confidence issue. I am afraid of messing up with a case ending while speaking. Also, my vocabulary is weak.

      @@vladzioadenauer943 @Vladzio Adenauer there's alot of us that speak Welsh but when you leave school it sort of fades out as you have to speak predominantly in English to accommodate other people. I've not got a problem with English people my partner is English and my daughter is has learned both languages at the same time since birth. It's simple things like walking into a shop and the cashier speaks to you in English until they find out your Welsh shouldn't they speak Welsh first and then switch to English if you don't understand them? It really dose baffle me as to how most people don't see that this is going on. If your interested in knowing how the language started to fade have a search up on the "Welsh not" . It's claimed to have been stopped sooner but there are people who claims to have been punished this way even as late as the 50's

      @@EPICFAILKING1 That is why Brits are being left behind if compared to other Europeans. They are absolutely unable of speaking any language, they don't even know their own syntax/grammar properly.
      The rest of European youngsters learn at least their mother tongue and English, while many learn some other international languages, namely Spanish, French or German.
      Brits nowaday are too Anglo-centric. They tend to believe the rest of the world should imitate them, like if the world should adapt to the UK and not the other way around.
      And then some people gets surprised about Brexit and wonders why that country is comitting suicide. Nationalism and provincialism at its finest, if you ask me.

    I love his reaction. Ok, up to a certain degree it is for the fact of being in Germany. The foreign reporters are in charge of getting a translation. But there is one thing that counts even more.     Most people don't seem to get why he refused. The fact that the "journalist" himself asked in german but wanted him to answer in english and basically do a translater's job was just disrespectful. It felt like "I'm gonna make my life easy by asking in german and translating it afterwards but you do our work please for your part and speak english immediately"
    It had pretty much "dance monkey, dance" energy and didn't have anything to do with the fact that hes's a german in germany. It was about respect.

    When English speaking people go on a holiday to other countries and come back they often complain "they don't speak any English there, it's hard to communicate" as if every country they go to must learn English for them. If you are in Germany speak German or use translater. That's it.

      Another big thing is wherever in the world you go, restaurants, shops, advertising boards and lots of other things are all written in English. Schools in England do not have a compulsory language to learn in lessons, you get to choose a language to learn if you wish. Maybe we should put a compulsory language lesson into our schools such as German or any other.

      Martin swift: Compulsory language should be Spanish or Chinese (Mandarin), given that those 2 languages (along with English) are spoken by the majority of the world's population, therefore they are most useful. German isn't that useful - it's only spoken in Germany and a few neighbouring countries. Same with French. Even languages like Hindi and Arabic are more useful than German.

German students leave the "Gymnasium"(equivalent to us prep school)with a language level usually around B2 to C1. (A1= newbie / C2= native speaker)

      @@zafferung4440 English and German are cut from the same cloth, not only this but English is the international language, it doesnt mean english speakers are forcing you to speak another language in your own country it means that if you can speak english, and you are comfortable speaking it, and you just so happen to be speaking at an international sports event, one which literally has the brand "FedEx" as a sponsor, makes you choosing to not speak english seem like a personal mental issue.
