  • Every Undertale CZcamsr has to, at some point, make a video about the music of the games to qualify for the UTDR Seal of Approval, and what better song to analyze than It's Raining Somewhere Else, my favourite and (as I argue in this video) one of the most important songs in the entire soundtrack. I hope you all enjoy.

Hey folks, thanks so much for the positive reception! This already got way more attention than I was expecting for a very niche topic in an already niche section.
I would like to quickly address the Goner Kid parasol dialogue that a couple of people have mentioned in the comments. Before this video I actually didn’t know it even existed, otherwise I most likely would have included it as it’s definitely another connection between this song and Gaster/Sans/Deltarune. That’s about the limit of it though, but still important. Thanks for pointing it out to me!

Another meaning that I found is that the title could be referring to the multiple timelines. With Sans seemingly having some level of awareness of the other timelines and possibilities, the song's title could be referring to Sans knowing that the no mercy/genocide route is a real possibility that could have happened. This could also explain the "you'd be dead where you stand" by hinting that Sans knows the danger the human could potentially pose. In this timeline, it's okay, but Sans knows that "It's raining somewhere else."

An interpretation that I came up with recently (It may not be what the title is actually referring to, but I wanna share it anyways) is that maybe it's a reference to Toriel. I have seen "Rain" being sometimes compared to crying. In that very scene, with that very music, Sans talks about the lady who is worried about you and who was crying at the other side of the door. "It's raining somewhere else" because Toriel is crying somewhere else, worried.
Honestly, I don't really believe that interpretation anymore, but it was interesting nonetheless.

    • @ethanotoroculus1060
      @ethanotoroculus1060 Před rokem +56

The odd thing is I came a pretty straightforward conclusion.
Raining is bad weather- so it's a rather standard poetic standin for some unpreventable bad outcome- and the _"somewhere else"_ referenced is every other timeline.
Bear in mind that tmk, this cutscene can only happen if the player is below a certain violence threshold. So the title is basically referencing Sans' profound awareness that, even if he's enjoying the luxury of a good repoire with you on a pacifist playthrough now, he's also cursed with the knowledge that another version of himself somewhere else could just as easily be in exact opposite situation. So, in that way, it really is raining somewhere else.

I gotta say, the case for "Sans is from Deltarune" sounds pretty damn obvious when you lay out all the evidence like that (even though that wasn't the point of the video lol). I knew _of_ the line where he replies "i know the feeling" after positing that Frisk must be homesick, but somehow had always interpreted it as a reference to Flowey's resets. As in "I wish things could go back to the way they were before". Of course, that was an interpretation that crystallized for me years before Deltarune was even a thing, and there was no better explanation at the time besides "Sans is Ness", but I think because of that I'd been subconsciously ignoring its new relevance until now.
Besides that, I don't have much to add. Sans' vibes remain immaculate as always, and so do the vibes of his music.

    • @AnonsTreasures
      @AnonsTreasures Před rokem +10

It's hard to tell yet, looking at all the evidence. It's just as easy to assume sans worked with Gaster and Alphys and learned of the nature of timelines. His consciousness doesn't exist outside changes or that he has some meta perspective over it. He lives in a state of constant incredulousness over the nature of his own reality. This could totally be if he was from Deltarune, but it begs the question of why he even would or if he even could. Gaster only learned of the existence of the player and the overarching "states" or "worlds" his original timeline is capable of being in because of the nature of him existing in a game controlled by humans. Sans has never had any dialogue to assume he knows more about the true nature of this outside of timelines being controlled by whoever has the determination to do so. Which his dialogue assumes it's Frisk, not us.
I wouldn't rule it out, but I actually don't expect any Sans 4th wall wackiness in Deltarune. It's entirely unfounded but I get the feeling it will be left vague if this Sans is ours.

i've noticed that sans feels incredibly in place in deltarune, but shockingly out of place in undertale, looking back. he's wear the type of outfit that most would already be wearing in hometown, including for the time of year, fall. a jacket and shorts. why would he wear that in a snowy forest filled with fantastical creatures, many laden in armor, including his own brother?
but most of all, he feels very happy in deltarune. not particularly "alternate events lead to the character being different" like asgore. but in retrospect of how sans in undertale feels so reminiscent and homesick, deltarune sans feels like this is his norm. deltarune light world is his element. he's just a janitor at a convenience store, he isn't a sentry guard in a war. he's just your casual neighbourhood friendly man everyone knows and loves. he doesn't have to lose his brother for no reason or defend his entire world, all he has to worry about is the weird dinosaur lady coming in every day in a trench coat and grabbing thirty dollars worth of instant noodles.

I remember someone commented in another video that the title "It's raining somewhere else" could be referring the genocide route or rather other timelines. If you look at it symbolically, rain often represents sadness and even loneliness. The phase it's raining somewhere else is suggesting that in another time in another place, somone is suffering. In genocide, sans mentions maybe in another time he could have been friends. So if he knows about that then he can know that theres a timeline where everyone dies in a pacifist or netural run. So he knows that even if it's peaceful now, a genocide timeline still exisit. In short, the title overall song imply that even if things are happy here, somewhere else somebody is sad, wheiter that be in a different timeline or just in general. The best day of your life could also be someone's worst, you winning first place means somone lost to last, etc and vice versa. Just because it's sunny right now doesn't mean it's not raining somewhere else

I just realized something about Sans' character while watching this video... whenever he specifically wants to talk to you about something - any certain something - he takes you out for food and a bit of banter. He's a casual guy, even when it's time for serious talks, and takes you to have casual conversation over a casual invitation to dinner (except, of course, in the hall of judgement).

    Great Video.
I noticed you didn't mention Goner Kid's dialogue, which I at least personally feel is referencing this song without it being included in his scene. Besides the reference to the song's title I also feel it fits in line with the idea of being lost elsewhere with really scary and sad implications in Goner Kid's case, especially since where he is now outright refuses to allow him to exist. What makes it even more creepy and sad is giving him the message through giving him the umbrella makes him come to terms with his situation and pass on, either telling you not to think about him so he can pass on, or possibly so you don't have to carry the weight of knowing the truth of things here.

to me, the song has always had a lot of different meanings.
the one i think of the most is.. well, this song plays only in neutral and pacifist. it's calm, maybe it's not always perfect, but it's ok, at least that's how sans sees it.
even so, the looming threat of "the anomaly" dampens it. sans knows, even if this timeline is peaceful, it's raining somewhere else. in some other timeline, sans is watching all his friends die, watching the underground go empty, and doing nothing about it.
it sounds sort of silly when i say it, but it's more of a feeling, it can't be explained. it's a feeling of respite, if you will. like the end of pacifist, before an inevitable reset. Respite.
i feel like respite really is what this song conveys. a moment of calm between chaos or pain.
rain could also be interpreted as sadness, or tears, as it often is. somewhere else could mean another place, person, or time. i dont know, im not good at interpreting this stuff.
personally, and i mean REALLY personally, to me it means a version of that first explanation, though maybe not quite a toddler murdering everyone i love in another timeline.
somewhere else, I'm stressed, in pain, apathetic, hurting, alone, somewhere else all my sins fall upon me and i feel like the scum of the earth, somewhere else i feel like i should just end it all, but not here, not now. right now, im listening to music, i dont have to worry or stress, i dont have to think about the past or the future, i can think of now, and watch the rain splatter against my window.
cause, even though its raining here and now, i know i'm okay, cause in reality,
    well, it's raining somewhere else.

I have a theory of my own on my channel. But I don't want to be rude by pugging my video here... So instead I'll summarize the theory. (And probably cover it better honestly because I leave notes to explain my thought process xP). I really want to know what your thoughts are on my theory.
But to summarize the video........ It explains that, because of how fountains work, water that is deep underground building up pressure until it shoots upwards, a geyser...
The definition of a geyser according to google is (a hot spring in which water intermittently boils, sending a tall column of water and steam into the air.) Friendly reminder that Jevil says "• *SOON, THE "QUEEN" RETURNS, AND HELL'S ROAR BUBBLES FROM THE DEPTHS...*
      • *LIGHTNERS, CAN YOU STOP IT?"* With the 'roar' bubbling sounding kinda like boiling water.
Now, if there is no geyser, this adds pressure with no where for the water to go, until the ground can't take it any longer and it all comes out at once. How are dark fountains opened? A lightner has to stab the ground with something, regardless if it's a knife, a sword or even a pin. So... where DO _Lightners_ get so much *_DARK_* energy or whatever that they can use their 'own' power to open whole fountains of the stuff? Well.. What if there's a massive natural reservoir of darkness underground?
The darkness is really spewing from the ground isn't it? So, isn't closing the holes that relieve this building pressure a bad thing? Yes. Yes it is. Then that calls into question Ralsei, because he DESPERATELY wants them closed

when we talk about sans, the first thing that came to our minds is that comedian sans or the genocide route sans, but i always like to remember the real sans. the sans that is calm, that like to stay in his own world in his head and that sans who cares more about the other than his self. he's melancholic, he's sad and feel every single time that something is missing, his home is missing.

I've always hought of the title's meaning as an inability to enjoy the present, in other words: even when the sun is shining, it's raining somwhere else.
In the context of the game, Sans can't really enjoy a "good ending" because he knows that it could be ripped away from them at any moment (by YOU the player) and that most likely "it's raining" in another timeline/universe.
I kinda feel like I focus(ed) so much on this interpretation because that was the part of Sans' character that I could relate to the most when I first played Undertale.

I think the Song's name tells people everything they need to know about Sans's backstory.
He's from "Somewhere else". Not Undertale, not Deltarune, somewhere else. Somewhere that maybe rains a lot, maybe so much that you can't ever see the Sun explaining why Papyrus doesn't know what a Sun is.
It feels that even in the Song's name it hurts to even remember about his old home. It's not "It's raining in [Insert Home name] it's somewhere else, somewhere else he can't go back to anymore. Somewhere else he may want to forget about to forget homesickness.

      Walked right in
Sopping wet, and chilled to the bone
      Grab a glass
      Just to get me warm
      Take a seat
Take a breath and sigh to myself
      Feeling so forlorn!
      Caught your eye
Coming over and stoped to say hi
Flash a smile, offering a drink
What a night, couldn't fight the feeling
Oh how you'd change my life!
Day by day, week by week, countless months we grow close
Such a strange way, how you draw me in
Come the day, you don't answer my call
Just want to know, how have you been?
You say it's nothing, don't know what I'm talking about
      Say
      That there is nothing wrong.
But I could see you shifting back and forth on your feet
      Why
      Did I play along!
Soon those days were gone and all I knew
Is how to think of you!
      And I won't be long
      No
      Not
      Long
I don't know, when the storm had started, I was
Already busy searching for it's end
      And i just know
It's the kind of weather you would treat
      Like an old friend!
      (Today's) a sunny day out
The birds still sing so sweetly
      Flowers bloom

7:14 That text.. "maybe sometimes its best to take whats given to you" followed by him taking it back is a BIG DEAL, let me explain, throughout the game, Sans subtly "tests" you: would you be willing to pay for Grillby's (does the human feel empathy?), do you have enough money to buy sans' fried ice? (does the human have wealth and is willing to use it?), "atleast you like crosswords" is sans acknowledging that atleast you have SOME kind of personality during the genocide run, and "pretend to be human?" (Does the player feel guilt/remorse?). He also has tests to see if weird timeline stuff is happening (like saves/loads) and in mettatons hotel thing where he tells you that you would be dead where you stand, is subtly aimed at making you fear him as to prevent a genocide run to happen to him in an alternate timeline, he is subtly trying to extract information about the range of emotions that you experience and then using that to try to secure his world, but in that scene, he lets up, he just cant bring himself to do it anymore...

This was great, I loved it! That scene is one of my favorites too.
My personal favorite song from UNDERTALE has got to be UNDERTALE, but if I were to pick the one that means the most to me personally, it would have to be Small Shock.
I think the scene talking to Flowey at the end of the Genocide route perfectly encapsulated the theme of empathy that persists throughout the entire game. Even on the evil route.
Because now, you understand that monster from the beginning. You are that monster. And THAT monster fears you.
My second most personal song would have to be Choked Up (the song that plays in the final corridor)
Also, my take on Sans wanting to go home was always me thinking he wanted to go back to the first timeline. Because flowey reset and effed things up himself, and Sans, possibly, remembered it.
So he wants to go back to how things were before Flowey ruined it all. Is kind of how I imagined it at the time.
I don't know if I'd still agree with that but I think it's an interesting take. ^.^
Btw I'm subscribing, I definitely wanna see more from you. This was really good.

Banger vid!! This song *always* stood out to me growing up.
I mean if the name itself doesn't imply it enough the song overall just feels like a perfect representation of distance,
at least from the way I see it. It gives you that sort of feeling of something being just out of your reach; but along with that it gives a feeling of a sort of contentment.
I feel like that's really just a perfect execution of sans' character at least from what's implied to be his backstory.

i loved this video! it's one of my favorite songs & i honestly didn't know IRSE was an arrangement of sans., but that makes a lot of things make sense. i'm really glad to see someone talking about it tbh, it's such a special song & i think a lot of speculation from fans is pretty limited, like you said, to boss fight songs & the like
before, i've always interpreted the melancholy of IRSE as having to do with the statue of asriel & the general sadness of the underground - especially with how the restaurant is right next to where it got ripped up & replaced with mettaton. the resulting "rain" from the broken fountain that soaks through the floor & falls on the statue's new location in waterfall, where presumably very few people will see it, has always felt really lonely to me. i think that maybe this secondary reference on top of the sans meaning that you went over is on purpose, because toby fox is Like That

For me, it's pretty straightforward. "It's Raining Somewhere Else" means to me that there's something bad happening elsewhere, just not here. I don't really think about it hard tbh, I just vibe hard to it on some rainy days or when I'm feeling like it. People praise Megalovania or Hopes and Dreams or Spider Dance or however many other favorite songs people vote for. For me, this song is one of if not my favorite song. I kinda like the chill (kinda somber) vibe. Dunno why, just does.

I'm happy to hear a breakdown of this song, since it does something the rest of UT's soundtrack seems to avoid: its genuinely sad. Think about it. Heartache is empty acceptance; Napstablook has several songs associated with him, and they're mostly pretty upbeat; Genocide lacks any sad tracks at all; and Here We Are is more about the fear that comes from trauma than the sorrow. So why is it that Sans, an implied outsider, is the only one thats sad? The entire species has gone through a lot of fucked up things, but he's the only one that has sadness associated with his trauma.
While It's Raining Somewhere Else isn't discussed much in the video essay space, the music remix side of the fanbase loves it. A lot of covers have been made, but I think ateotu's cover hits on something with it. "You hide the truth as you speak in jest."
I think the implication here is that Sans is a fundamentally broken person. He's burying himself in his job(s) and using humor as a deflection tool. After all, its a known phenomenon that people who are really funny tend to have poor mental health. Couple this with the devoution he has to his brother, and you have the recipe for someone who, unlike Toriel and Alphys, will do everything in his power to never allow his own trauma to surface. And if it does, don't worry about it, just a bit tired bro.

  • @rinina
    @rinina Před rokem +2

Ive loved this song since i first heard it on undertale, it always felt like sans and toriel's theme and with the deltarune native sans theory it gains a much more melancholic tone. Hey just something to share. Someone made a hypothetical, fanmade battle taking this idea, though at the moment it's purely a concept and no game is made about it yet. It's "[A Sans Hopes And Dreams] Dying for Somewhere Else" in SoundCloud.
It's a fanmade idea about Sans taking Asriel's place at the end of Pacifist, with him absorbing seven human souls and gained the ability to warp reality. Afterwards, he used this ability to try getting back, and basically you are getting in his way which forced him to fight. The title for the fanmade track also lines up, "Dying for Somewhere Else"

I actually love this scene because some of my favorite Undertale comics are based around this part. One of them has Frisk act like they do in the game, no real reaction, but then Frisk admits they can't read the menu and Sans is mortified after realizing he basically threatened a 4 to 5 year old who didn't react because they couldn't really understand what he meant. The other I'm thinking about has Frisk get really scared after being threatened and start crying and runs away, and even though they still free everyone from the underground, they REFUSE to even be in the same room as Sans if there's not somebody to protect them.
I love these takes because Frisk _is_ a kid, and if they weren't trapped by the cutscene or this happened more realistically, WHY would they just willingly stay there in-story? Because lord knows I would've rockeded them out of there if I had the chance when first playing the game.

This song is my favorite song from Undertale. I would listen to it whenever I felt melancholic or homesick in college.
I always thought the idea that it’s raining somewhere else was supposed to be something sad and I was the strange one from finding it calming but I think that’s ultimately the point. No matter if it’s happy, sad, dreary or hopeful, whether it’s years ago, today or tomorrow, it’s gonna be raining. There’s nothing you really do about that so you might as well find solace in it and keep going.
Even when it’s not here, it’s raining somewhere else.
I also like the idea in-universe, Sans is reminiscing on the rainy days back home, where ever home that is for him. It’s not really raining in waterfall but it is raining somewhere else and even if he’ll never go back to that place, he’s content knowing he has some piece of it in his memory and with the little drops of water in the Underground.

As far as I'm concerned, there would also be another theme in Undertale that in my opinion didn't get the recognition it deserves: Finale
A bit forgotten because of its circumstances when it's played, Finale is in my opinion the strongest theme "emotionally" in the game. Every time I play it, I feel like a stream of heroism and hope flows through me. Taking the musical base of Your Best Nightmare, the harmonic combination of the themes of the souls come together, and give you the feeling of moving forward, all in resonance with the soul of Asriel himself with the leitmotiv of Memory/His Theme. A great theme that not many people talk about, even though I know it is very much appreciated by a silent part of the community.

One missing piece is Toby Fox's "important info" post, written from Sans's perspective. In it, Sans says something similar to a Gaster Follower. Sans also mentions he was slandered once and had to stand in the rain "in that cool way where you can’t tell if i’m crying, or if it’s just water."
It doesn't change the core of what we know about Sans, just grants additional insight into his past, current worldview, and personal moral code.
