I think you're taking about The Earth Song by Micheal, right? That was released in 1995. Michael actually loved Mariah a lot, but I don't know if he was inspired by this song.

Yall must be talking about Man In The Mirror which actually came out in the late 80s a little before MC’s debut..and I totally agree... I see MJ’s influence in many artist (male and female) that came after him. From the vocal phrasing of young MJ, to the lyrical content, showmanship/ dancing of adult MJ. He’s thee most influential artist of all time, so it’s very safe to say most artist since him has been influenced in some way. 💯
Mariah recorded this album when she was 19. She started writing for the album when she was 15. She also has a demo tape that she recorded before this album which she recorded when she was around 17.

Mariah has cited Michael Jackson & The Jackson 5 as one of her biggest musical inspirations behind Stevie Wonder & Aretha Franklin. she recently released an album with previously unreleased tracks that couldn’t make it on her projects called “The Rarities” and she has a song on there from 1990 called “Here We Go Around Again” that sounds just like a Jackson 5 song.
She never cited Micheal Jackson as one of her biggest influences lol

Michael went to bat several times for Mariah, exposing Tommy & informing the GP on what he was doing to her. When she performed “I’ll be there” at his funeral she said he was one of her biggest supporters & influences so don’t say you’ve seen everything.

Marihah Carey is so so so unique and UNPARALLELED
So crazy how this song by Mariah was made in the very late 80s and still is so relevant to this day and age. She did a little Acapella version of this last year during the protests. She can still blow it out the park if she wants too.
