She recorded this song in 1988/1989 when she was 18/19. Her debut album came out in 1990! A lot of the songs from that album she wrote in the mid 80s in high school. And recorded demos etc.
The album version is better imo. But the lyrics is what makes this song great! Her songwriting is top-notch! Love it! It's from her first album!

Yes, the album version is way better and it goes more with the lyrics than the remix they used for the video.
The album version has less of a ‘cheesy r&b movie instrumental’ ig you can say. It’s just a different sound, not quite as produced as this one. This was one of her first singles outside of the US. She recently did an acapella snippet of this on Instagram.

Agreed. Production is a bit cheesy here but it has amazing lyrics so she's forgiven. Mariah actually said she felt pressure from the label with this album and it ended more over-produced than she intended.

When you're a white person they don't go through the same struggles, that's where white privilege comes into play. Blacks and Latinos aren't treated the same. It's always been like that and that needs to change especially for the African Americans they always have been targeted since they first got here and they were used as slaves by the white man. And those are facts. The inequality needs to stop. We are all human. Gay, straight, white, blacks, latinos and Asians. The police have targeted too many minorities especially African Americans and killed many of them unarmed. My dad as a Puerto Rican is a victim of police brutality and not once but twice.

Can you believe the critics trashed her because she was "too political for her age and debut album" this was released 1990 and they gave a limited release to the song. The whistle note is one of the most piercing ones from her entire discography with You're so cold that has the hardest intro ever. This song is quality all over. She really is a very talented gift to humanity. Shame how they treat her nowadays just because she has aged.

She's Websteriah. Her lyrics have always been extra af. In the best way. As an Asian, I thought that's how all western songs were written when I was younger but boy, was I wrong.
