BMW 228i M-Sport - (Track) One Take

- Matt attends the Motor Press Guild's annual track day, where he gets to drive a wide variety of cars at Willow Springs. To Celebrate passing 300,000 CZcams Subscribers, we're uploading 11 videos in 11 days!
Today, we're driving the BMW 228i M-Sport. This car is within a couple inches in all directions of the classic E46 M3, and as tested is just $38,000, taking a bronze medal in the "Cheapest BMW press cars we've seen" game. How does it hold up to track conditions at Big Willow?
I've test driven the M235 and the M228 back to back and I swear I liked the 228 more. The fact that you've got 80-100kgs less over the front axle makes it feel quite different and a sweeter steer. For a road car, the 228 has got plenty of mumbo, and the kicker is that the 228 is $15k cheaper than the 235 here in Australia. A great little package and pretty much unappreciated.
I just bought this car, I am absolutely blown away… feels like Christmas Morning everyday.
Matt, I've gotta say I really like the one take style videos. They are really straight forward and honest, and if I were actually interested in buying any of these cars this is the video series I would look at. And they're quick to produce so we get more videos! Thumbs up every time from me.
Agreed completely! I love this style.
Let me just casually peruse the window sticker while I'm driving around a goddamn track. So smooth, I love it
Thank you for this review, finally a decent track review of the 228i. Everyone is reviewing the m235i
I love my 228! People sleep on it because it doesn’t have an M in front of it but damn can it move and hold corners well! 270hp in a car that light with 260 torque makes it move
that is a great sounding 4-cyl!
You said it`s 280hp, in reality BMW claims 240 , dyno shows around 270 to 280hp you are correct ;)
is there a reason why BMW claims lower numbers
Wolf idk if someone answered your question outside of this but BMW rates their cars as “worse case scenario”. So you pay for 240 but if you get 280 then most wont complain.
Its a track car, could be tuned. Might also depend on what mode you're in. Love it either way
I own this car, according to Dinan, the N26 variant is 261HP the N20 version is 268 HP. The N26 falls off at higher RPM due to cat restrictions.
The ultimate driving machine!! My next car!! love the drive too! So well balanced and precise
matt it does not have DCT as u said , it`s a ZF auto 8 speed
luimarco Yo lui, love your videos.
It must be a damn good torque converter if he can't tell though
I'd definitely take this car with a 6-speed manual. Very nice. I like the small size.
The MSRP of this car is only slightly more than my '91 318is, after adjusting for inflation; the 318is cost about 35k in 2014 dollars. Glad to see that BMW's offering a sporty AND relatively affordable coupe again.
Hey Matt TheSmokingTire , I think I speak for a lot of your subscribers when I say that I appreciate the fact that you answer a lot of the questions and comments on your videos. I think you've reached a point in your career in terms of recognition and follower size where a lot of other content curators would stop interacting with their viewers, but you haven't. Thanks
Truly underrated. The beautiful thing about this car is that you can buy a nice pre-owned one for $25k (:
I drove a 3 year old CPO 228i last weekend, dealer ask of $27,500. The car had 18,000 miles and came with a factory 2 year unlimited mile warranty. It looked brand spanking new. Unfortunately about $7500 past my budget. Stunning car.
@@jjhpor go back and look now!! theyve lowered in price since you commented. hope you saved some cash!
As a way to economize, I just ditched my pricier car for a near-perfect 2016 228i MSport / manual with loads of sweet options - 12k miles - for $23.5k and I can't believe how much car it is for the money. And an amazingly fun drive, too. Shocked how much I love it. Drove the M235 which is awesome, but the 228 feels more nimble, lighter, great steering. A great little car that just loves to go!
15-19 now!!!!
6 year old comment, but can confirm. I bought my 2014, same spec as in the video, in July 2017 for $21.5k. I could not pass up that deal. Still have it 7 years later, it’s been insanely reliable and still looks modern. It’s become my ride til it dies but I suspect that will be quite some time with just 71k miles.
Ya just sold me on the car I’ve owned for 7 years. 😂
That exact spec, too. It’s an incredible, and reliable thing. Haven’t had any issues until this year when my from driver side blinker decided to stop working.
Seems like the M2 is gonna be awesome!
Love my 2015 228! No m sport package but that’s just for looks anyway it doesn’t really add anything. The car moves and underrated for sure! The fact that mine is awd and I can go rwd at the push of a button is amazing too
Matt sounds like a cool dude to have a beer with! there are to many guys trying hard for attention whit their car videos or nerds that are just reading the numbers and facts. You are just on the right path, Matt!
He clearly said "manual gearbox" but he's not shifting. That car is great in the manual.... :-)
What an awesome car! Can’t believe I’ve overlooked it. I’m looking for a daily driver so my z4 can be the weekend summer car and this looks great
Been thinking about this car for awhile, watched this video and now im hooked on this car! Great review can't wait to see more!
Nice review. I would like to see one of these with just the most basic mods, a JB4 tuner and upgraded intercooler for track use. You gain about 35~ WHP and anywhere from 40-60 lb-ft. That would rip. And it looks like it rides a little high so maybe some non-aggressive lowering springs. You're looking at probably sub $1500 in mods and so much more performance :D
I had this car before I traded it in for a 240i. There's times when I miss my m228i even though I love the 240i. I miss the 228i mostly because of the 22mpg vs 18mpg in my 240i
Taking my 2016 228i M to the shop next week & excited to see the differences on the track
installing:
BM3 Stage 2 flash
Catless Downpipe
intercooler
chargepipe
intake
Did you have any issues with the upgrades? i plan to do it too
Was the N20 able to handle the added boost? Thinking of going stage 1 on mine
Nice! Glad to hear you liked it, makes me want one even more. The little turbo 4 is a sweet engine, I was surprised when I drove it.
EXCELLENT review Sir ! Great feedback on a really nice car. The four Cylinder is underrated. Maximum torque from 1250 RPM and great fuel economy.
It must suck owning an FRS/BRZ. Every car will pass you up. Moms minivan, GTI, Bimmers, Focus ST and the list goes on and on......
ravenstylea2 honda accord, camry, maxima, altima, ford trucks , dodge ram, silverado
lol
HONDA FIT
This was a press day event, if that FR-S had the tires Matt claimed it did, it would be absolutely leaving the BMW through corners, but it wasn't because the driver was a hack, and doubly so because Matt isn't even that fast of a driver.
I have an FR-S and I assure you that nobody is leaving me when anything resembling a corner is involved, well, except for that 911 GT3 RS, but that rocket ship would leave anybody.
This BMW is a great throwback to the original 4 cyl M3. Cars are so big these days, this is the size a coupe should be, or even the 1 series M coupe. Now just shove the M4 engine in it.
And I greatly dislike the change in BMW model numbering. Who wants the first M4 instead of the great history of M3 coupes? Not me
Cheers for the video Matt. This gives me an idea of what to expect when I take my 125i M-Sport (F20 LCI-2) to the track. I pick mine up in 2 weeks. Can't wait!
I'm glad to see TST respond to the additional subscribers with more content. Some of your colleagues at /Drive+ could take a few notes. Now that Chris is getting his own thing going, all we need is for Musto to get his own channel and I'll be a happy camper.
underrated car!
I've driven both the 228i and the M235i and I swear, I like the feel of the 228i more. I know the M235i is faster and more capable. On paper, its much better, but something draws me to the 228. Can the lesser car be more fun and nimble than its big brother? Am I crazy?
FWIW, I drove the 2016 Mustang GT and while its faster, it feels very large and heavy, which is something I didn't get from the 228i. Could the lighter weight of the 228i have something to do with driving feel?
228i has less weight over the nose, so it's more eager to turn in
I actually just read this today, after seeing the cover of July Road and Track. Good comparison between all BMW 2 cars and 1 series. www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a29245/bmw-2-series-comparison-test/
Kenneth Johnston Thanks you so much for sharing that article. I was right all along. Maybe I should get a 228 (or 230 as it's called now) and bring it to Dinan for some love. :D
Not crazy. Less weight and you can use all of the power. The M235i on the street you can't use all the power as you'll be in jail by the time you rev it out all the way.
TheHvk I think you've described it perfectly! Fun is a lot more than just being faster. 👍
Damn Matt I don't know how you do great commentary and drive that well simultaneously.
Thats the way I would spec a 2 series. Turbo 4 with M package. All the car you need, and really efficient. Cant wait for the M2. That thing is gonna be beastly, and will be the M car to get for car enthusiasts
the n20/n26 are great engines. These cars go 0-60 under 5 seconds and get 35 mpg on the highway. Only downside is it sounds just okay.
I pick up a used 228i M-Sport based on this review. It really is a fantastic little car. 6 speed manual, rear wheel drive, strong engine, and 33 MPGs on the hwy (so far). Im not sure there is another car out there that can make those claims with low mileage and sub-20K pricing.
It's a turbo 4 banger, so there is room to get more power out of it by adding some bolt ons. I can see these cars making 275rwhp very easily and being a great car to daily drive and track on the weekends.
Readin' and trackin' like a boss. Haha, love it
matt this was an important review because i did not really like the look of this car when i saw it at car show but your review convinced me to test drive it when i buy car
TheSmokingTire Matt - as a fellow enthusiast these one take impressions are great! Keep 'em up. Thanks for doing them.
Just ordered this with M-Sport, Harman Kardon, Manual trans with no other options. Hey Matt, wanna drive it?
Nice man, have you received it yet?
Enjoy it! I helped one of my buddies spec his exactly the same. Best bang for buck performance BMW
That one feel through for many reasons. Army orders, etc. Spec'd a 2017 the same way but added THP. It's been at the port in Baltimore since the 12th and will continue to sit there until BMW and the EPA can get an accurate monroney/window sticker. 4-6 weeks according to my CA. Sigh.....
Bwaahahha just pulling out the window sticker and looking it over while driving on the track like its nothing :-P
i like this car too. its a proper bmw unlike a lot of cars they currently make
I believe that this car is equipped with a ZF 8 Speed auto single clutch transmission, not a dual clutch. Still an awesome review, keep up the good work guys!
It's not a single clutch, it had a torque converter.
True, my bad just looked it up.
You were right by saying it's not a dual clutch and it's a ZF 8 speed, but like Bryan mentioned, it's a torque converter unit. I still think the ZF unit is just as good if not better than some dual clutches; it shifts very quickly and it doesn't have any of the slow speed quirks.
Great review Matt - Loads of useful info jammed in. Thanks to you - just got a 2016 228i MSport / manual. A lot of car for the $ and I love this thing!
It's researching them now also. How is yours doing? Any issues? Seeing him pass that FRS really proves the case...
@@1compaqedr8 I love it more now than before - Zero issues at all - Super responsive and great fun to drive . Never lets me down
Bro that’s actually hilarious a frs pulled up😂😂 I own a brz n lookin a buy a 228i as a daily n wanted to know how it it compared, legit perfect example😂
I like these 1 takes
Matt's mantra "ok let's get traction control off"!!
really love these one take videos ! more please :)
Can't wait for the M2
The Perfect description of this driving experience.💯 Follow to see one build
dude were's donnie. really missed his input ha ! another great review matt , youve definatly uped your game almost had a feel for the car my self , loven these keep them comeing , chers matt , definatly does sound good for for a four pot, seemed not far off as quick as the M4 , was it quicker than the eco mustang? sertinly looked more eager to turn than both the mustangs ! chers
Andrew Downey yeah for sure quicker than the EB Mustang.
BMW 228 or GT86 for track days and weekend driving?
Had to laugh, you give a great review to a car I'd not previously considered two days after I ordered my GTI. I'm sure I won't stew on this decision every time I see a 228i.
I want this car so bad!
Sounds a lot like a inline 6 to me. As for electronic power steering, I'm still having trouble getting use to it. I understand it's more efficient than the old hydraulic steering but I feel that good old organic connection with the road.
Get it in white or black and it would be 550 less on sticker. So this did not have track pack? That adds PSS tires and 155mph limit. I'm glad you liked it Matt. My dealer hasn't had any M sports but now I really can't wait to feel the 2er.
the M package is mostly cosmetic stuff. You need to get the track handling package to get the real goodies.
Im tempet to buy one, since my Mk6 GTi kinda desapointed me. The one am looking at is the 220i. :)
Too slow
YazeedSaber Not really.
why it disapointed you ? im sure it is a lot faster than a 220i
Dacrazy-can Well, if you are coming from a Mk5 GTi, then you know why. Not saying it is slow. Well, the 220i perfomende, price, and full economic is perfect for me. I allready have a fast car for the track( 996 gt3.. :) . Just need a everyday car. And its a BMW!! :)
Tune your gti! I have a mkvi as well and I compete pretty well with E92 M3s. FWD is a little lame though. But this M would be a solid upgrade
I almost shed a tear when I heard the price in the US. In my country the base price for the 228 is 50 thousand euros...
He was driving with the stability control ON and traction control OFF. I have a 220d and you have to push the boton during two seconds, he just did one pulsation. Also when you push that button, it changes the mode from sport + to comfort (big difference in steering and gas response). So basicly, he was driving the car in comfort mode, without traction control. Best way in circuit is to have Sports + mode, or comfort with all systems OFF. Read the car´s manual next time before driving, Matt. ;)
Great video and car anyway!!
Daniel Diez it definitely was not in comfort; it indicated Sport + on the dash.
TheSmokingTire Maybe in the manual version is different (doesn´t have the Sport +, only the Sport). Thanks for the answer anyway, and looking fordward for the next videos. ;)
I own one, with a manual transmission....ITS AWESOME.
I hate this stupid "M-Sport" marketing designation. Between that and creating supposedly "genuine" M cars like the 4,500lb M5 and various M-branded SUVs, the M brand has been diluted beyond recognition. Whatever happened to just amending an "s" to sport-tuned trims? That is, why not just call this a 228is and let the M brand cling to its remaining sliver of dignity?
DroverChicago M-Sport is a distinct handling package, not just shiny wheels and badges.
TheSmokingTire Yeah that's great and all, but it's still not an M, is it? If it's not an M, don't imply it is with the package name. Though after looking at pictures of the 228i M-Sport, I'll give this to BMW -- at least they didn't put any M badges on it as far as I can tell (except on the brake calipers). But that hasn't always been the case with M-Sport-equipped cars..
DroverChicago It's just a look and feel package, and really has nothing to do with the dilution you speak of. Now you aren't wrong, but the m sport packages are not at fault here. The M sport steering wheel is the same wheel you see on full M cars, rims are of similar design, seats are VERY bolstered, on certain models they get lowered (see 435i m sport), blacked tailpipes, extra firm sport+ suspension setting, paddles, etc. So you get some real benefits and they don't stick an ///M on the back so I see nothing wrong. I do miss the 335is/135is approach though, however that indicated some special trim AND a horsepower increase, not just what I mentioned above. That being said, they really should've called the M235i the 235is, but with the way the M135i sold overseas I don't think the accountants would've let them pass up that $$$.
DroverChicago
I have a 228i with the M-Sport Package. It is basically a sport package but with a better marketing name. I do think the M235i should be called the 235is but it really does not matter. I still laughed when Matt blew by that FR-S. It made my day.
DroverChicago I know what you mean. But I bought a 328i m sport for my wife and I can tell you it feels and looks so much different than the regular 328i. Or even the older 325. I would have been fine with a 328is if they offered the car as mine is. (Body, lights, seats, wheel, wheels, brakes, suspention) But there are really only 5 tiny little ///M badges on the car. Wheels, and steering wheel. It actually has less badges than the 335is did haha.
38K drive away? They're like 80K here in Australia. I'm moving to the State's.
Interesting - 228i with M Package costs here in europe 44.000 € which is around 56.000 USD.
Interceptor1986 American's get it cheaper, car market is much larger and more car's are bought per head then most other countries. Plus the taxes are obviously less then our's. But that's still about 70k USD after conversion for me. Man, our car taxes are ridiculous here down under. Bullshit!
Interceptor1986 228i M in the uk from £29,500, about $47500. Could be different versions/specs but named the same for Euro to US market.
No Way If it makes you feel any better, most countries tax cars the same way as Australia if not worse. The US is an exception in this case..
ProZackBoy yeah true that. When I herd of Singapore's taxes I almost passed out. That's beyond anything I have ever herd of.
Another BMW that is making more power than what BMW claims. I don't think they should have a problem though as long as EPA mpg figures are met.
Good Video!. Considering one of these if my disability requires me to own an automatic car.
You're probably surprised the 4 cyl did so well cause the twin scroll turbo is running 19lbs of boost :-)
Hey Matt, direct descendant to my favourite Bimmer, 2002tii!
The M235i Should be like the E46 M3! Fun ass hell, still light as fuck! :)
I wish BMW would bring more manual gearbox cars to these track days. Awesome car, but I'd never want the flappy paddle box.
Manual will slow you down and won't give you a full racing experience.
But it will give me a full driving experience. I've driven DSG, great speed, but boring. I'd never forgive myself for buying the less engaging option. Just my personal opinion after trying it.
I agree with you. I prefer a manual gearbox. But now a days these paddle shifters are on point. Probably quicker than the manuals.
BadBandar59 also more fuel efficient.
You don't buy a car like this because fuel efficiency is your top concern.
It bugs me a bit that jurnalists (american ones?) always have so low expectations about 4 cylinder cars. The *28 line of BMW's are plenty faster then 90% of the averge BMW's sold around the world, at least in Europe. What americans seem to miss that the engines you get are just about the top versions. In Europe we have *16, *18 and *20 BMW's as well. If we talk 1-3 series, you only have 30 and 35 as well. I have a 325 with 218hp. It's plenty fast and on the small roads I like to drive it's gets dangerous fast - I can rarley use the power. And this is a smaller car with more horsepower. 240+ hp in a Golf size car will be fast regardless of the number of cylinders.
And.. Calling $38 000 cheap is kind of funny. Compared to what? :P
Um, this is 4-cylinder right? Because the in car noise sounds suspiciously like a six. Are they pumping fake sound in through the stereo?
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Stock doesn't sound good (well, you can barely listen to it) but with a proper exhaust is awesome...
I think they are, if you look at the 328i review by CNET they said they record the 6 cylinder and just pass it through the stereo or something like that
Not really, they do use active sound but it's to make it sound like the car has a louder intake not to fake a 6cyl sound. Doesn't sound like a 6cyl to me.
Matt, could you tell your video editor to use more volume from your mic than from the car? I had to turn the volume up to hear you but then I also had to deal with listening to all the bumps in the road which was way louder than your voice.
I'm not wearing a mic in these videos. Just GoPro audio.
Matt Farah
Ah, ok. Well in other videos I can hear you a lot better so I thought it was just a video editing error.
TheCobruhAlienat0r yeah, on our more produced videos I wear a proper audio setup that can be adjusted every frame if need be. This is just basic raw dog gopro so there's not much I can do.
I'm planning to take my 2-series to the track for the first time. I'm pretty sure this press car came with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Mine came with Pirelli All Season run-flats which I quickly changed to Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Would these tires be good enough? I only plan to go to the track 1-2x/year.
1:06 manual lol, Yeah I think it transitions in the corners like a E36 M3 has that track car feel.
None of these bmw's have a locking rear diff only the models that say ///M with 1 number around it has it. The 1M really was a oddball name from bmw messing up the ///M names.
Also bmw is throwing the ///M badge besides 235i to signify its a M Sport! So if you own a older model which is a true M Sport you might as well do it too. But if a ///M variant of your car was made that same year you can't and only the high output models get the ///M along side it because no car with a ///M on it should be slow.
It's all about the right size.
Plz review the bmw 328i i am a big fan of yours and i am about to get one plz review it!!!!!!
I don't like how BMW made the turbo 4 sound like an inline 6 on the inside. It just feels weird hearing one thing when it's really another.
Sweet
Did je just say That This car is faster Then the mustang??
muito da hora..!!!
Secret drift toy lol
i love bmw's but 38 grand is kinda steep. i was just on ford's website and a manual 2015 5.0 with track pack and recaro seats starts at 37k.
For road use, the 228iM is more than capable. For the track, get an M2. Lastly, if you are a show off on the street, get yourself a M235i/M240i - really no other reason to own one. ;-)
will this car shift for you when you hit redline in manual mode??
Oh Noo Sport Plus? Do I need my credit card?! ;)
Matt, did you say it has 280 hp? On their website it says 240hp
Hey Matt, what kind of cars are the 1 and 2 series? I'm not too familiar with them, like how do they compare with the 3/4 series as far as size
***** smaller. The 3/4 series are now about the same size as the E39 5-series, and the 1/2 series are about the same size as the E46 3-series.
So honestly Matt, all things considered, M235i or M4?
how is that a manual gearbox. It has paddle shifters.
2 series doesn't have DCT.
Which suspension is this car on? The adaptive or?
This car seems like it is as fast as the mustang 5.0. BTW, TheSmokingTire this car only has 240hp. The EcoBoost has 310hp.
It does seem fast, but seeing as the new gen Mustang GT is supposed to be as fast as a Boss 302. And we know how fast the Boss 302 was I am going to hazard a guess that the BMW is noticeably slower.
Shoshanna Rubin The new gen GT is actually slower than the cammaro. The GT was hitting 130 on the straights on the race track. This BMW hit 120 on a turn.
I did not compare the GT with the Camaro in my response though. With that being said, the Camaro Z/28 is a monster so it is not surprise it is faster. The only V8 Camaro the GT Mustang probably should be able to beat is the SS model without the 1LE pack.
Also that BMW topped out at 125 on the straightaway. Hitting 120 on a corner is not something that happens unless its a super fast sweeper.
Remember though, BMW tends to underrate the power of their engines. (granted so does Ford these days) A 3 series with the same engine was found to make around 240 WHEEL horsepower which puts the crank around 275-ish.
Will you drive a sport diesel engine too?
hey matt, i know this car is a good 10+ grand more than your fiesta, but money no object would you take this car over the ford?
Sounds like there's a lot of wind in the cabin.
The 228i is like if BMW bought over Nissan and then made a Silvia S16.
InfiNRG tf
?
Now, why would people pay $30k for a Subaru BRZ with an anemic engine vs this you get a turbo that makes 240HP and can be modded to 300HP. Both are RWD and his has a much nicer interior.
Damn where are you driving, on Mars?
Yes in the US 228 = 2.0 4 cyl. 335 = 3.0 I-6. Makes no sense to me.
