    John, I hear what you are saying and I 100% agree with all your points.
    But I don't think those "p*ssies" or "man childs" that dislike the new female protagonists hate them because they're women. They hate them because they're characters that are neither interesting nor relatable.
    We can relate to someone like Leia, Ripley, or Sarah Connor because they all overcame struggle, personal weakness, and became stronger through the art of natural storytelling. They were also allowed to show their more softer, nurturing side that a lot of women can relate to.
    When you have characters like Rey, Helena Shaw (Indy 5), She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Reva, or Sabine on screen, they come off as wish-fulfillment. Like to showcase that women can do everything better than men and go through little-to-no struggle to get what they want. Which isn't the best way to get your male-dominated fan base to like your characters.
    You may disagree, but this is just my view point.
    I would've liked these female characters a lot more if they had more characteristics outside of always being brave, stoic, or physically capable.

      Star Wars has no leading gay characters. Andor has two gay secondary characters and Acolyte has two gay tertiary characters. But as for characters being women or minority, I don't understand why people think that's the sole goal? How does that work? The race or gender of a character does not affect the creation of a plot or story. So therefore they can't hurt the plot and characterization. I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that they're just throwing in minority/women characters in for the sake of being there.
      In Acolyte, all the characters seem to have necessary roles in the story. Mae is the sibling turned to the darkside. Osha is the former Jedi who has left the order. Sol is the noble older Jedi. Yord is the younger and more rules based Jedi. They all have roles in the story that are far beyond just their characters race or gender. I think it's fair to say any of these characters didn't click with you - I don't know if I like them myself. But I see no evidence that the point of any of these characters is just to be a minority.

    • @rambler6519
      @rambler6519 Před 3 dny +3

      @davidletarte214 it's fine to have financial goals as a motivation for diversity, but diversity alone doesn't make a great show. So many of these dud Star Wars shows just have such poor quality control when it comes to logic and story that it seems the writers and producers take a vacation as soon as casting is done.

    • @rambler6519
      @rambler6519 Před 3 dny +3

      "The race or gender of a character does not affect the creation of a plot or character" False. With many of these newer Star Wars shows, you can predict with 100% certainty if a villain is actually a villain or a misunderstood anti-hero based on race or gender. I already knew, for example, that Mae would start fighting for the good side and would not stay a villain. Same with Reva ultimately going after Vader. These story decisions are predictable which is bad writing.

  • @AotearoaChef
    @AotearoaChef Před 3 dny +21

    What i find annoying is when there is lazy writing that immediately tells us “this is a strong female character” and they jist keep repeating that over and over. Edge of tomorrow is a great example of having a strong female character well written.;

    • @datguy3581
      @datguy3581 Před 3 dny +4

      How though? What about Mae makes her strong? She's a character who is being manipulated the entire time and hasn't managed to actually win a fight fair and square. I don't think Mae is a very complex or interesting character but I wouldn't label her as a "strong" character and I don't see how her gender is relevant to her character either.

  • @adbraunstein
    @adbraunstein Před 2 dny +12

    The issue with the whole "stop putting gay women in leads" crap isn't so much the fact that there is diversity amongst the characters, it's that the writers are prioritizing messaging above story. People wouldn't care about gender or race in lead roles if the stories were good (i.e. Myles Morales in the Spiderverse, Furiosa in Fury Road, Jin Erso in Rogue One, etc.) Pay attention to the tales you tell first - casting is secondary.

    I have never understood the backlash for midichlorians, in the original trilogy it made sense for it to be this mystical thing because the Jedi were gone and pretty much seen as a myth or just never existed as according to characters like Han Solo. But in the prequel era, Jedi were everywhere and were a major part of the republic and the society of this universe, so of course they'd try to understand what their main source of power is with the resources they had. Also the midichlorians aren't the Force itself but simply help connect us to the greater Cosmic Force and help guide life, which is an excellent idea, shows nothing in this universe is at random as many in our own world like to think

    Kennedy's decisions and path honestly make me believe that she didn't even like the movies she was producing. Why else would your immediate goal be let's change, upend, and toss out the formula that created this unprecedented global phenomenon? She's an executive who likes to believe she is a creative, who also gets to explain away any blame or criticism of her widely despised direction by blaming the fans for not liking it. It's the toxic men (who bought you your second house) that are the problem, we don't need the legions of fans that put me in this undeserved position anymore. She actively dislikes the franchise and its fans, I believe she was put in her position out of a sense of obligation and not qualification and that she diminished a beloved franchise knowing she couldn't be fired. She knew that she could do whatever she wanted with zero pushback from the studio because who's gonna fire Kathleen Kennedy?

    What needs to happen is the following:
    1. WRITE A COHESIVE SCRIPT, man I keep saying this. Between the sequels, the embarrassment that was Book of Boba Fett and the first 3 episodes of the Acolyte...a movie or show, no matter the genre stands or falls by the strength of the writing.
    2. Get more talented directors, if you can afford to throw 100 mil or more onto a show, you can hire a competent showrunner/director, let alone the multi hundreds of millions paid for the sequels.
    3. Adapt the good stuff that the community actually wants to see and have asked about for years and years. Mostly more mature and thought-provoking stuff, examples of this would be Knights of the Old Republic parts 1 and espescially 2, the Darth Bane trilogy and the story of Darth Plagueis.
    4. Less preachiness about social commentary. Having social commentary in the film medium is perfectly fine, but you want to show it, not monologue/preach it to your audience. For examples on how to do it: The entire filmography by Stanley Kubrick.
    Having said that John, we also need a good series/movie from the Sith perspective. Not only will that deepen the universe, but it will even make the contrast between the Sith and Jedi even more apparent. Of course, would be interesting if there was any material to adapt on that front, now wouldn't it....
    On a final note, please can we stop putting quip humor into everything? Star Wars is not the MCU and please don't try to turn it into the MCU.

    I don't disagree with your points. I would say having a creator's room is an absolute necessity. They did it when putting the High Republic books together, I can't understand why they can't do that for shows and movies. I also agree with prioritizing movies over shows. Star Wars is best on the big screen. I also agree with new eras, but I would say it doesn't JUST have to be in the 50-500 years in the future, (though I would like that), because there's a 25,000 year history that is up for grabs. That's a huge sandbox that people can play in, and you don't need to connect those eras to the Skywalker Saga. You don't to show the 10x great grandfather of Admiral Piett. While I agree that the movies need to be epic and should have 3 main characters that drive the story, I don't necessarily agree that their presence must be felt in every subsequent story. They could be felt in movies/series where the stories line up. The galaxy is big enough that not everything needs to be tied together, and you have made that point once before. Maybe, they should set up some length of time where the movies and the shows they make are in that same era so that people don't need to keep track of what era they're in.

    The problem is that SW has been repurposed as a vehicle for pandering and virtue-signaling. KK wants projects that she can use to position herself as some kind of equality warrior in the industry, and the audience can smell it. They’ve fundamentally lost the trust of their main audience.
    Lucas hired Leigh Brackett to write Empire, a pulp-fantasy author from the 40s, he didn’t hire the newest, trendiest writer in Hollywood. He wanted someone that understood this type of heroic, mythical storytelling…. We’re not getting that now, we’re giving the keys to the kingdom to people that should be writing American Horror Story or some high-school drama.
    We need someone like a Del Toro - who understands mythology, and a project needs the time and detail put into it that Peter Jackson had with LOTR, or even George with the prequels. Thats the level of world building and creativity that SW requires.
    It all feels poorly thought out and clumsily knocked together.

    I'm black/African American and I am all for diversity in Star Wars (and Marvel and for all TV series and films). That all being said, I and most (NOT ALL) Star Wars fans who are complaining about the push for diversity in SW by Disney ARE NOT complaining about the diversity itself, but are instead complaining about (a) the execution of the diversity (b) how those diverse characters are written (c) the hand fisted/forced shoehorn real world social political message into SW and (d) Disney trying to make SW more appealing to girls by increasing the number of female characters and focusing more on the existing female characters (as well as retelling past events to show the female characters being more prominent and seeing more combat then what they were originally shown doing). While I wouldn't go so far as to say that Disney trying to turn SW solely into a girl brand like some on CZcams have said/theorize, I will say that they are trying to make SW equally both a girl and boy brand. The problem with that is that SW has (and most likely always will be) a boy brand that appeals MAINLY (NOT SOLELY) to boys. And while there are definitely girls and women out there who love SW, MOST (AGAIN, NOT ALL) girls women DO NOT like or care about SW. Just like MOST (NOT ALL) boys/men don't care about Barbie (which is a girl brand). Imagine trying to take Barbie and trying to make it more appealing to boys. It wouldn't work and it would (rightfully so) piss off the female Barbie fans and might drive them away from consuming all Barbie products. Just like trying to make SW more appealing to girls has pissed off and driven away many male SW fans. The honest truth of the matter is that for the most part, boys and girls like different things and genres. Like Kendrick Lamar said to Drake in his recent diss track, they're not like us (and vis versa).

    Isn’t it just time to admit that actually the way to save/preserve Star Wars is to just give it a rest.
    Right now, you have the kids who loved the OG making the new shows and essentially doing million dollar fan films that become so narrow minded that they only ever appeal to the smallest group of fans.
    Star Wars success since Jedi has always been in its brand, its iconography and marketing it. It’s not about telling brand new stories with brand new characters because what new character will be able to sell as much if not more toys and merchandise than Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker?
    There is just one thing that someone needs to do to help Star Wars, and that is to let it rest until people forget about it enough to want to revisit that universe.

    Make your marketing properly reflect the mood, tone and concept of your series/movies.
    I feel like LucasArts often sells their shows/movies on an idea that is never accurately conveyed in the final product. For example: Boba Fett trailers were all built around selling us on a "crime boss" storyline, Acolyte was marketed as a show about the dark side of the force and Obi Wan was sold as a dark, emotional story about one man's internal struggles. In the end, what we got was never reflected in the material.

    Original Era: Empire rule, backs against the wall adventures
    What I WISH they’d have committed to in the Sequel Era… Rian Johnson’s idea of Ben and Rey leaving behind the Jedi and Sith altogether. With force sensitive people out there still. This would have led to…

Speaking only for myself, I grew up watching the original trilogy on VHS, dozens and dozens of times until the tapes wore out and had to get more! This is before the movies were re released in theatres in ‘97. With Star Wars, Luke Skywalker was my absolute favourite character! I waited over 30 years to see my hero back on screen BEING the hopeful Luke, The Jedi Master, REBUILDING the JEDI. Instead we got what we got in The Last Jedi. Imagine waiting to see your hero come back after decades of nothing, and we get a disgruntled old man betraying everything he stood for? I get there are fans of The Last Jedi, but you cannot dismiss the fact that that movie fractured the fan base. NOT the fans themselves. And when we finally got that Luke that myself, and other fans wanted, it was the season finale to Mandalorian Season 2! So ya… I want to see more of that Luke. I wish I had my hero back and still a part of the future era of Star Wars. I am mainly speaking for myself, like I said.

      It may be tough to write for but not impossible. There's plenty of great star wars stories that have been told on both TV and film. @@HellBot-gi5si

    It’s been 47 years since the original Star Wars came out. Sadly, maybe it’s okay to let it go.

      Growing up means letting go. I tried watching Revenge of the Sith today. It hasn’t aged well. The lightsaber combat is terrible. The dialogue and acting was trash. At the time I watched it in the movie theater and was BLOWN AWAY. Today I turned it off as soon as they wanted Anakin to spy on Palpatine. Star Wars will always be near and dear to my heart because it reminds me of my dad. But those all movies except for Empire Strikes Back and possibly Rogue One aren’t that good.

      That the best answer.
      It was great fun in its heyday, but that time has long gone. It was lightning in a bottle, something that can't or won't happen again. That doesn't mean you can't be a fan. People are still fans of bands and musicians from a certain time period, even though they haven't made any new music.
      People should do the same with Star Wars.
