Old school mechanic - a dying breed - rebuilding parts instead of just replacing the part or a module and throwing the old part away. On top of it, the guy is German (possibly with a desirable OCD ;-)), which pretty much guarantees a perfectly executed repair, with no corners cut or steps missed. Excellent site...

Iv watched all your videos and I’m always amazed at what you can do , but I don’t think you have ever told us your Landrover history . Did you start with buying the Freelander 1 ?
Did you ever think about buying the Disco 1 or 2 before you got the 3 . Or where they perceived to be too old and unreliable already for your needs
I know there is a perception that all Landrovers are unreliable but where I live in the Cotswolds there are thousands driving around , towing trailers horse boxes etc , I’m on my second and apart from regular maintenance I have not had any problems
Your stickers is proudly on my rear window , so glad your channel has grown , it just shows how big the Landrover family is . Stay safe and keep saving for your fuel for your holidays it’s going to be £2 a litre here soon 🤯🤯🤯🤯

A tip I found a few times on CZcams for removing rusted in studs is to run some candle wax around the base of the stud as you heat the surrounding area, after breaking three studs on a 50 year old exhaust manifold I tried this and the rest came out a lot easier without breaking.

Just would have been nice to point out that before you start rebuilding a turbo you check that the actuator works. We do that by getting someone in the drivers seat and just putting the ignition on, at that moment the actuator move's the vain's by closing them ready to start. Sometimes the vain's seize so you can reach through and disconnect the actuator arm then try again. You can see them move by looking up from the bottom of the car . If then the actuator still doesn't work it needs replacing. The vain's can be bought separately for around @130 euro's off Ebay. When you receive the new vain's it is easy to understand how they fit? I found out all this information at my own cost so this is great information to have. One More point when my actuators broke down both side's no fuse was blown so when they where replaced they both worked first time.

When we did this work, we were in the middle of the engine rebuild and were just glad we could get parts at all. Covid was also still very present with delivery and availability problems. Interesting decision to just re-core the turbo.
When my LR3 turbo went bad, I replaced the whole unit with a new Borg Warner full assembly. I tore the old turbo down just for fun and the vanes were jamming in the exhaust housing. If I had re-cored it, the vanes would still jam as there is no obvious way to service them. Considering how difficult it was to do a turbo swap in the car without lifting the body, I would recommend just to swap the full assembly.
People talk about lubricating the actuator linkage to stop the vanes jamming, but I think the jamming is caused by carbon build-up in the variable vanes, not the linkage. Once I soaked the turbo in brakecleaner, the vanes were much better, but I still wouldn't reuse it.

One of the reasons l sold my LR3 my fear of the turbo charger “going” and being told it’s recommended the whole body is to be lifted from the chassis (whoever designed this engine needs to be shamed) and the garage cost would probably exceed the value of the vehicle as LR3’s with “problems” can be bought pretty cheap in the U.K. see EBay LR3 spares or repair Just getting to oil/grease free up that actuator via the front wheel is like trying to open your front door through your letter box. Again such a shame a great vehicle spoiled by that short block rubbish engine. Great video guys

Christian did you check the flatness of the exhaust manifold before you re-fitted the assembly? Knowing you, you probably did lol but normally those manifold bend like a banana and have to be machined flat. I am a subscriber to Barum Engines CZcams channel here in the Uk and I've seen him do a few of them. The last one a couple of weeks ago was so bad he had to machine more than 2mm off it to get it back flat. Fabian's one must have been pretty good then? Love the lost video of 5his turbo rebuild

What do you think about gas engine V8 that we have in North America?

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  Před 2 lety

Love it, but it's not an option for us here in Germany. Just too expensive, especially now with the gas prices, and don't even get me started on the taxes we have to pay for an V8. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera

It's the variable part of the turbo charger they fail and get sucked into engine

Hello Mate, i was having a Engine System Fault message on my dashboard so i decided to remove the Turbo on my 2005 Range Rover Sport 2.7TDV6 and cleaned the internal Turbo Vanes to ensure free movement of the Turbo Actuator Arm. Before removal of the Turbo i was getting error code P132B-00 - Turbo/Supercharger boost control A performance (permanent), now after cleaning up the Turbo, i also decided to reAdjust the adjustment screw settings for the actuator arm to have more room for movement. After re installing the Turbo back in the car the Engine System Fault error was gone and there were no more error lights on my dashboard. I am now getting DTC P138E Turbocharger boost control position sensor A - minimum/maximum stop performance with no error lights on my dashboard. I am also experiencing power loss on high rpm with these DTC's "B1B02-28 Low Frequency Coil" and "B1C57-14 Unused relay drive". Could you please help me solve the problem with my car.
    Thanks

😱 That is terrible I think. It is possible that the actuator runs out of stroke. Did you transfer the setting as I did. Check out the two videos from Outback Discovery on CZcams. He had the same issue as you and then he fixed it in a video later. Big job. Christian

how on earth are you going to balance the turbo? because it will vibrate its self to death less it's perfectly balanced.

I keep seeing Americans putting taps in their Milwaukee cordless drills and running them in and out of threads in a few seconds.
Until I see Christian doing that, I'm going to keep using a normal tap-wrench. :-/

The irony is just killing me, my discovery sport is in the shop as we speak getting a new turbo installed. To which I got a turbo under boost code as check engine light came on. Now a whole new turbo had to be purchased?! I dropped off car to LR, with no mechanical noise, nor smoke from turbo. I had cleared the only code that had come on, cause it was going to be couple weeks before they could diagnose car. Time came to bring car in and get it fixed . Light hadn’t come back on yet and drove fine whole time, long as ya didn’t get on it like a crazy person. Technician put over 500 miles on my car trying to get check engine light back on so the computer could pin point what to change. I noticed by driving it, the waste gate had to be loose not sealing causing the code. So why couldn’t the technician de-deuce this while putting all those miles on my car ? He saw the code in the history, but had to have that light come back on, only to say needs new turbo and catalytic converter??? Just not adding up ?!?

I won’t see your reply to my answer. Better write me an email. Never heard of a 500 mile test drive. That is indeed ridiculous. Christian
