Mozart The Abduction from the Seraglio K 384, Chorus

  • The Abduction from the Seraglio" is the first opera Mozart wrote in Vienna. It is truly a gem -- and stands out from his other operatic works in several ways. It was written at a time when in Europe anything "Turkish" was all the rage. It's colorful, exotic and definitely foreign culture captured everyone's imagination, including Mozart's. He created a musical style that was to resemble Turkish music -- music full of percussion and exuberance.

Fun fact - the painting depicts the arrival of Frantz Josef in Kraków - the former capital of Poland. The people are dressed in the traditional costume of the Polish nobility (inspired by Turkish fashion), which has been the national costume since the 16th century.

Mozart was a Freemason, after all. The idea of a one world government, however, is repugnant to me. Nations can live in peace even if they aren't under one government.

It's strange, I was brought up in a family that almost listened to no music (Only religious music) and I was obsessed with Carmen Sandiego's intro music. Later, when I explored music genres, I fell in love with classical music - especially the classical ERA and of course Mozart's works! Fast forwards, years later when I heard this piece I felt the most bizarre goose-bumps of my life!

@@miyeteks The alla Turca style was very popular in the late 18th century. It started off as Turkish inspired marches but more specifically in opera's set in locations under the Ottoman yoke meant to imitate janissary marches as close as possible. By the end of the first decade of the 1800's, the percussive elements of Janissary music had naturalized into the compositions of the time and became a big part of the military sound of that era. The crescendo's, stretta's, finales and all other manner of "endings" so popular throughout the 19th century would not have been possible without the contributions of janissary elements into the orchestra and compositions.
