    The curtains fall. Much applause.
    The Emperor claps vigorously and
following his lead - so do the courtiers.
    The curtains part.
    Mozart applauds the singers
    who applaud him back.
He skips up onto the stage amongst them.
The curtains fall again as they all bow.
    In the auditorium,
    the chandeliers descend,
    filling it with light.

The really sad thing is Mozart wanted to compose Operas, but unlike symphonic and chamber instrumental music, Opera composition requires a sponsor and commission. As Mozart was the first freelance musician trying to make it without patronage, he had difficulty getting to write more. And just as he was getting famous enough to be able to get commissions from Opera houses directly, he died. Imagine if instead of around 10 mature Mozart Operas, we have say 25 of them. The World of Opera really missed out on more compositions from people like Mozart, Bizet, Gershwin, Bellini. Just thinking about it makes me feel really sad.

The way I explain Mozart and Salieri to my children is, it's like The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Beatles music just keeps going on and on and it is endless, it will keep going long after I'm dead. The Rolling Stones as good as they are they will eventually fade that is Salieri. To be fair that is most music nowadays.

BUT, I can honestly WITHOUT DOUBT say, that that is the absolute very 1st time I've EVER HEARD someone call the Beatles mediocre!!! And I understand it's your opinion, and you actually feel they are mediocre, but, I believe that their music will live on, side by side with Mozarts. Unfortunately, I think if society ever gets to the point where we would discard one of them, we would surely lose them both. But, what do I know, I just like what I hear.
