  • This time I have one great vintage 3 head Hi-Fi cassette deck, beautifully engendered and efficiently built. The problem is the deck is not paying or recording tapes. Let's open it up and check what is wrong with it.

I know it was a belt, but after replacing it, it still have the same problem.

Followed this video to replace the belts on my Dad's KX 650 that had stopped working. Really helpful and entertaining. Only thing I'd say to anyone else doing this is that the auto stop/tape movement sensors on this deck are optical, the black/white segments on the cassette drives are what trigger the sensors. On my dad's deck the small band had totally rotted away and all the black gunk had completely covered the black/white segments and the sensor on the under side of the circuit board at the top. Make sure you give all these a really good clean with isopropyl.

Hello, very good video and I was able to repair my KX-650RS. Now I am listenig to my wedding music tape which I recorded 31 years ago 🙂 I left over the small spring that appears in min 21:30 but after reading the comments I will try to put it in the right place. Also in my deck the small belt turned into a kind of black glue but after cleaning and replacing everything works fine.

    What's up buddy ?
I'm repairing a tape just like yours, but I've already fitted 2 belts but the rotation is unstable because the belts have cuts with small deformations causing variations (flutter) in the rotation. The worst thing is not that, it's the labor to keep testing better quality belts because they all come from China deformed. How do you do in these cases? Are there original Yamaha straps for this device? Mine is KX650 but it only has a pressure roller on the right side of the mechanism.

This tape of mine came missing the pressure roller on the left side. The steering wheel runs empty.

Where must the spring be inserted that is shown at 21:33?

Behind the face plate. Between the plate and the mechanism down /left side. He forgot to put it back. Also, the mechanism should come out front side not inside the deck. Otherwise, good video

it's just an earthing spring that goes between the faceplate and rear of the mech. It sits over one of the black plastic prongs on the left side. You can google for the workshop manual and it's in there 🙂
