Lyrics:
"Went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends
A chance to share old memories and play our songs again
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name
No one recognized me, I didn't look the same
But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
People came from miles around, everyone was there
Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air
And over in the corner, much to my surprise
Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise
But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
Played them all the old songs, thought that's why they came
No one heard the music, we didn't look the same
I said hello to "Mary Lou", she belongs to me
When I sang a song about a honky-tonk, it was time to leave
But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode
Playing guitar like a-ringin' a bell and lookin' like he should
If you gotta play at garden parties, I wish you a lotta luck
But if memories were all I sang, I rather drive a truck
And it's all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself"

He was one of the best!
never get tired of this great song.
great life lesson.
you cant please everyone, so you got to please yourself.
A very well written song. I love the reference to other musicians in it.
---------------------- THANK YOU FOR THIS SHARE - really
I worked Ricky Nelson's next to last show, he was such a wonderful, down to earth man. He was very kind, spent time with the crew. He is missed.
I grew up with the biggest crush on him. Its wonderful to hear someone say something good about someone who struggled so much.
Wow, that is great and bittersweet
Where was that? His plane crashed after leaving Guntersville, Alabama, his last show, where I was living at the time. I had no idea who he was, I was 14, but it was HUGE local news. Mom explained he was a teen rock/country star, teen heartthrob from her era. I think I first heard this song because of the local news of his tragic end. Always loved it.
This is in our life path - this fine man left us all.
I was 14 and going through a rough patch when this song was released and I first heard it. It had a profound effect on me, more than any other song I ever heard. "You see, you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself," struck a chord in me and motivated me to start reading books on philosophy and to start taking Academics seriously. Where I grew up, studying philosophy and taking Academics seriously made one an outcast.
Good for you little dude
Thank you 🙏😊
I guess I'm still some kind of a Christian but Tao Te Ching, from ancient Chinese philosophy and a basic text of Daoism, says some of the same things that were written in the New Testament three thousand years later.
That is so cool bx that's what great music should do
Thank you for sharing. Glad you found a way to pull through. Best wishes
Remembering this great artist on his 84 birthday in heaven.❤ He left us an awesome Legacy. 🎤🎶🎸
Flippin LOVE this song
A very talented man and highly under rated.
@raykrocker994 Ricky Nelson is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rock a Billy Hall of fame, and is one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 greatest artists of all time. He was and is pretty well respected.

Nice to see the late Allen Kemp and Stephen A Love in the background. All young men with their futures ahead of them.
My father loved this song. I tried to get him on the internet so that he could see stuff like this but he didn't want anything to do with it. Dad I miss you so much
I tried the same with my dad. All his old jazz favourites are on here, but he just couldn’t take to the computer. I did a playist for him, but before I knew it he was gone. He’d seen the likes of Rosetta Tharpe, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Big Bill Broonzy and lots more live, so I guess he replayed what he saw in his head.
To Albert and Peter…….may I join you by saying - yes, ditto. Not to bore you but I am now in my late 70s and my father , a centenarian, is still with us whilst our mother died some years ago. Indeed my father cannot now even attempt to use a computer, has no wish , desire or willingness to do so either . BUT , I ask you both this , might I be right in now thinking that whatever Papa might have enjoyed , getting his foot or fingers tapping to what he’d say was , “yes , rather a jolly little tune , not like that other racket “ …..that he just doesn’t even want to remember now, anymore of those happy family times ? Does that make sense ? And he won’t even listen to his much beloved classical music or opera. Anyway, just a thought, wrapped up in a question but I wish both you and yours well , and my condolences for loss which we never stop feeling . Alexandra.
@@alexandradane3672 hi Alexandra. My father is 96, and tells stories of his past, more now than at any other time in his life, our lives. Even tells me stories about WWII as well, and of the great depression Friends tell me to write them down, but I am not one to sit for extended periods of time, spine issues. He makes a point of seeing me once every week, either he will visit me, or I will visit him. He still drives. I know, that he knows, he doesn't have too much more time left now. His health is failing him. My father shares the same thoughts as your father when it comes to the computer. Anyway, just wanted to share things, your not alone Alexandra. Im 60 years young 🤗

Your Father HAD GRRREAAT taste in Music I lived in that ( AGE OF AQUARIUS) Era! WE had great times at those concerts from Ricky Vallie,Ricky Nelson,Ricky Cannata, To Eric Clapton Moody Blues ( The Magnificent Moodies (DAYS OF FUTURE PAST) Everyone there knew that would be a hit IN THE FUTURE! in 1972 the song NIGHT IN WHITE SATIN became#1 in America! In 1982 they played that song in concert in Portland and dedicated it tm my wife and me on our honeymoon! You should have seen my Guest! So, Thank you for bringing me back to a less stressful era! Today we need all the stress relief we can get.🎷👍
The story behind this song is phenomenal. Rick’s appearance at a Madison Square Garden concert gave him everything he needed to write this great song.
Words that I live by.
Good times.🍃🎼🥰
So thankful growing up in the 70's with great music like this and not rap.!!
Even though rap music began in the 70s. 1973 to be exact.
@@BrentWilkins7777 Yes, but it wasn't played on the radio until Rapper's Delight around December
1979.
Could not agree with you more.
@@BrentWilkins7777 It started with the bottle and if you listen to that is far from the garbage these days.
Were you aware that it is possible to extend a compliment without disparaging other types of music?
It’s great that you like this song. I do too. But there are many genres of music that other people enjoy. So enjoy what you like and let others enjoy what they like and everyone can be happy 😊
Love Ricky Nelson, did he say Yoko brought her Walrus? Haha, thats cool
Song so calm
Real music. Real talent. No gimmicks or computer enhanced bs. Just a great voice and simple backup musicians doing what they do best, and there was nothing better. We built memories on music like that. Give me the old days. They were better.
I love that song its real
I'mPlayed this on full speaker at my dad's burial in a beautiful place. The children were dancing and playing and it made for a happy beautiful moment in time . It totally fit his vibe. Credit to big brother for choosing it. Thank you for the music Ricky ❤
God Bless y'all, for remembering him in such grand fashion. ❤
Haven’t heard this for a while - fab little tune😊
Such a fun song
I have always loved this song and the chorus line is so true.
Right on, Lyle. This guy had a huge career in entertainment. But his best contribution to all of us was "you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself". Such a simple statement that most people do no follow, and he expressed it so well in the music. Great song at so many levels.
This song is 100 percent truth
He would have to change one word in it if he was still alive in 2022.
One of the very best.
great memories........................
Really good song
So Smooth.
So right cant please everyone so got you got please your self
Beautiful man
A brilliant song ooo
great song rip ricky
I was born in 1972. I woke up from my nap today. I’m 50 now. Never knew who sang this or what it was called but I woke up with the lyrics playing in my head “all right now, learned my lesson well” and so I did a Google search. Never knew Ricky Nelson sang this or what it was called but one of those songs I heard a ton of times through my life and somehow it was triggered out of my subconscious today. What a damn good song! Bittersweet. Reminds me of childhood.
Check out some of his other songs if you haven't already and his twin sons got into music/singing also Matthew and Gunnar Nelson. Peace N Love to everyone!
I remember it well. It came out in the autumn of 1972. I was 9 then, so I have a few years on you. This is in the top five percent of my favorite songs. This song would have come out around the time you were born.
This song took a lot of people by surprise.
Not many people have ever heard of it.
'Cept us old people.
this song popped into my head yesterday, just the melody; had to think real hard and I FOUND IT!!
I had heard he wrote this song after attending a party and all the attendees wanted to hear was his old songs that he didn't want to perform.
Futuristic for most
"You can't please everyone." How true that is! Unfortunately, in today's world, it seems to be increasingly mandatory to try. 😞
Unfortunately, it's ALWAYS been this way!!
Love him. Nothing better ❤️
@@MrBeyondbelief But, it's become twice as bad, during the last four decades.
its only as mandatory as we allow and tolerate.
giving an inch to the intolerant never works out well.
Great up a mile away NJ
He so beautiful

I have this 45rpm on my Jukebox at home. Sits in my living room and gets played nightly with great songs like this one! 43 years old and still drops the records like a champ! Best money I ever spent!😊🎶
I love this song. I cried when he died. Much too young. Beautiful voice.
yes indeed, a great singer. Miss him.
❤hello I loved him in a movie with John Wayne and Dean Martin
I met him when he played at Six Flags Magic Mountain where I worked!!
I love Ricky Nelson; his old songs and his new ones. “Garden Party” is one of my favorites. He was such an accomplished musician, lyricist and talent. The world lost one of its premier self-made musicians and artists the day Rick Nelson died. We miss you Rick. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ ❤
Back when songs touched your soul, you could sing along with them. 👏❤. RIP Ricky Nelson
Caught me!! You're so right!!
still is and been
Well said my friend! Touched mine and i didn’t even out up a fight!
We had it all and didn't know it at the time ❤
Yep. You never know you're having a good time till the moment's passed, huh?
It was a good one and good beat a well it had everything
This song is good enough to be a crossover country music song. I karaoked this song and a couple did the Texas Two Step to this song.
God he was gorgeous!
Love love love my god yes please
Music has a way if connecting us with our past, especially parents. It’s precious, and an amazingly powerful force in all humans.
That's why 90 % of today's music is forgettable 💩💩💩, with some exceptions.
Loved Ricky ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Learned my lesson well grew up in the 60s 70s thank you😉
One of my favorites. Rick was on his comeback. Words were so true. Amazing how you get tossed aside when something new comes along. I was living on Stone Canyon whe he formed the new group, the "Stone Canyon Band" . Such a great song. He was a CLASS guy. Sure do miss him.
Oh my goodness! If more people believed this. Such a better world!
Still love this song and have it in my phone. I'm 69 this year.
Happy early Birthday!!! 🥳
The years just melt away.
Grateful. 🙏🙏
We saw him in a free concert at knott's berry farm
Love This Song and Ricky Nelson
A deeply true song with a lot of hurt. check it out.
I so glad that he composed and sang this, didn’t realize that it happens to everyone on many different levels. MGBY Rick RIP ❤
I've always loved this song ❤ Rick Nelson was phenomenal!

I remember this song from 1972. I returned to it in 2011 while undergoing the worst in my life. I ended cruising Krome Avenue in Florida listening to it. So true. Since then, this has been my anthem.
I hope you’re doing better now ❤
"cruising Krome Avenue"??
Gone too soon!!...missed.
I grew up listening to classic rock. What a privilege ❤❤❤
Only the good die young!
Saw Rick at the Branding Iron in San Bernardino. He got a standing ovation after this song. Think it took him by surprise but he was very grateful.
Rest ❤️ in peace Ricky thanks for sharing your songs 💓

Straight forward and insightful song from his point of view….snubbed by the new rock gods…no one was right or wrong..Rick put his take on it into a powerful personal song
Old school music like this echoes in My soul
Ricky was the best! Saw him with The Righteous Brothers at the Long Beach Civic Center in April of 1984...what a show! In my top 5 of all time.
Good times then…
He was my dad's favorite singer of all time. I have treasured memories of him playing his 8 track in his pick up truck humming along to Ricky Nelson's smooth and clear voice. A flood memories comes back when I hear this song. It is 37 years ago that Ricky Nelson passed away. The start of 2023 is in a few hours, and I am listening to Ricky Nelson tunes, while reminiscing of my dad playing Ricky Nelson on his 8 track; yet It seems like a world ago.
Great song and a great songwriters- terrific band - he lives on ❤️🎸❤️
Your Dad and i would of got along I'm humming all the time to the oldies.
What wonderful memories you have!!!
👍🇺🇸
God bless you and your family ♥️
So underrated Garden party 🥳 🎉 😍 ✨️ 💙 was ahead of it's time .
This came out when I was in college and I remember the chorus. I think it is becoming how I live now that I have been retired for 3 years. It is good advice to follow. It is nice to hear him again.
Ditto
Times change, but you have to be yourself
Saw him at Lakeside amusement Park in 1970's
I didn't know this masterpiece before but someone recomended it to me..this is so beautiful and true words.Ricky nelson is a legend.wow his birthday was 2 days ago too."learned my lesson well, see you can't plz everyone, so you got to plz yourself'. how wonderful these ;yrics are.
Great singer. I am 75 best in my young days and better now
Yesss!
Agree I'm 80 now and still lovethe music I grew up on.
Loved this. Wish he could have made a comeback. Truly nice soothing voice. Clean cut. Excellent voice.
This was his last Top 40 hit. Although he toured and played, he was never really in the charts again. The music industry is a very fickled place to make a living.
Can't please everyone so you got to please yourself !! Absolutely True !! No matter how hard you try someone won't like it !! Great song !!
This song was Nelson’s fuck you to people not accepting his new direction in music.
In 1971 Rick Nelson was invited to perform at Madison Square Garden with a handful
of other ’50s rock idols only to be subsequently booed off the stage by an audience
not expecting Nelson’s, then, newfound love of country rock. The next year Nelson and The
Stone Canyon Band released the Garden Party LP with the title track recounting the night’s events.
John Lennon and Bob Dylan were in attendance at the Madison Square Garden concert.
Lennon was there bob dylan was not
@@claylapointe88 You'd like to... but I'm not like U ¡¡

Came across this song 🎵 late
I was crushed when Ricky Nelson died in that plane crash. I can't get over this song being over 50 years old.
It's life
He was an adaptable talent that could have gone on forever. R I P Mr. Traveling Man we all miss U..😎❤️💯
I heard Dukes Of Hazard. Love the song
Between the left and right, it's amazing when anyone is pleased. Just not meant to be that way
Thats why I got the TIJUANA TOUR you can drive there
A very close friend father was the film editor of the TV program Nelson so ibecame very close to the family Philo
“Can’t please everyone, so you gotta please yourself…”👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️
Finally figured that out myself. I'm 71. 20 years with Mom, and Daddy, 22 years with EX, 18 years alone (almost spent some time with 2 different loosers) 11 with son. The 18 years wer the best, but some of those, I worked, SO I was still trying to please everybody else!
Absolutely true, put yourself first . This is a song you can never get tied of . Love it
