      Chemistry in the hands of an uneducated or unpracticed individual who possesses no ability whatsoever to generate at least a general mathematically predictable outcome is dangerous. Glad your okay. And your show is fascinating. As I’ve said before, you are artful, your methods aren’t experiments, they are tested and proven methods. It’s an awesome show. It seems likely that the constant addition of air to the solution didn't help things on the ultrasonic side of it either. Degassing is pretty essential for effective ultrasonic cleaning.
    From what I've read, placing parts in a beaker in the cleaner is a fairly common practice, especially when you want to clean with a solvent.

      That bead weighed about 2 grams which is worth almost $120 US dollars today. I just question how much gas it took to get to that point...oxygen and acetylene gasses are expensive. Even running that torch for ten minutes might eat a large portion of the profit up. Muriatic acid is relatively cheap though and most of his shop expense has probably paid for itself over time.

    Chemical experiments look like a fun hobby. Although you seem to spend more than you make but most hobbies usually are expensive. Being that you need chemistry equipment, chemicals(some very expensive), and safety gear it's pricey. Yet over time and enjoyment if you keep making those golden grams it may build an alright nest egg. Price for gold may increase substantially at any time. Experiments and trial and error just may have you find a method that does truly only take 1/2 hour then your hobby will be a gold mine. Thanks for the video. Keep em coming.

    Thanks for another great video. For the past three years I have been collecting e-scrap and during that time I must have watched hundreds of videos on gold recovery. So I felt ready to try some. But I made a problem for myself, which I hope you can help with. Chemists in my part of the world sell H202 only in very small amounts at huge prices (€3.50/100ml). I figured I need about one litre for the more than one Kg of ram fingers in AP. Next best option was to go to a hairdresser supplier. Got 1L for €3.70. Poured 4L HCL, then added all the peroxide. Air pump was on already. That was when the fun started! The peroxide must have soap in it or something, as this lot started to foam and boil over (no heat applied). I put an inverted bucket over this lot mainly to protect my animals, then turned the water hose on to it to wash away the boil-over foam as fast as it comes out. After a while it stopped boiling and it is just bubbling from the air pump. What now?

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  Před 7 lety +1

      I've never had that happen. I don't have any experience to share. I bought my H2O2 at our local drug store, it's 3% and works ok. It's always best to do reactions with the vessel inside a catch basin or casserole to contain any boil overs.

    • @martinvanzyl747
      @martinvanzyl747 Před 7 lety

      Thanks. Yes, I was an idiot. Long ago I resolved to follow you guys' advice and always use a catch basin and then I go and leave it out. I thought it had stopped boiling over, so I left the pump running over night. Another big mistake, as this lot kept on making more foam, while some gold started coming off and going with the foam on to the ground and mud (it's raining). Now it's a struggle to pick up those tiny bits of gold.

    Ultrasound doesn't "like" to change media. So assuming the transducer is coupled to the stainless steel pan the ultrasound would have to travel through the water then through the glass of the beaker then into the acid. That is three changes of media. With each change the strength is attenuated or lost. Try again using the cleaner's pan as the reaction vessel.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  Před 7 lety +7

      The hydrochloric acid would damage the pan. And it's not my equipment. But I bet it would do much better as you described it.

    I used to work in a facility that made electronics for the telecommunications industry. This was back in the mid 1970s. All of our circuit boards were gold plated. We used a wave soldering machine. After a certain number of boards the solder had to be changed out because it was alloyed with gold! The solder price was about $5.00/pound. It was worth more than $50.00/pound as scrap. We had to change it because the connections were not soldered properly.

      250 C or 250 F? I've tried various chemicals on samples I have like acetone, alcohol, toluene, benzene, trichloroethane, and heptane, the problem is that the circuit board substrate is fiberglass and I don't know how the Gold is glued onto it. I have many kilos of edges like in the video, fingers, contacts, etc. and for the edge connectors I was thinking of just dremeling off the Gold foils and melting that down using the glass as flux (AFTER panning as much glass off as possible, of course).

  • @MrZetor
    @MrZetor Před 7 lety +23

    The ultrasonic cleaner served _no_ purpose in this experiment, except for heating (if you had the heat on, that is). The cavitation bubbles created by the US will collapse when they meet a solid medium, in this case the glass. Try the same thing again without the glass, just with the 'fingers' in the cleaner. Use max heat and a normal cleaning solution, i.e., not the acid. Place the fingers in a stainless steel net (or something) that keeps them from touching the bottom of the cleaner's tank. The cavitation bubbles can only form in a liquid medium, and thus surfaces that are in contact with the tank walls will not be affected (cleaned/stripped).
    Note that I do NOT know whether this will strip the gold plating, or whether US can do it in the first place, but if it works, this is the way to do it. Furthermore, I reckon your cleaner has less than 50W of US power, which might not be enough.

    In the first video, at the end of the experiment... he stated that after refining the gold that was extracted, the final yield was 1 gram of 999 fine gold... So I wonder how much of a difference in quality the unrefined gold was? I know that it doubled the weight... But I am wondering if whether you lose a margin of your gold during the refining steps????....OR..... Could it be that skipping the refining stage leaves so many other unwanted metals inside is your gold, that it is ½ as pure, and therefore not 990, 995, or 999 fine.... But possibly not even considered pure enough to be considered gold yet.. .but rather some kind of alloy? If it is still considered gold, or even fine gold... Then I would have to question 2 things... That my stannous chloride had possibly been tampered with, or my method of refining was subpar altogether, and quite obviously wasting alot of computer fingers.... Which is a sin... I guess?

    I believe the glass jar is creating a barrier to effectively remove the gold. The idea of an ultrasonic cleaner is it creates soundwaves and micro vibrations in the liquid to in affect peel the dirt/ coatings off. Because of the glass jar all your doing is preventing these micro vibrations from touching the items slowing the process. To properly do this the items need to be inside the bath space with fluid. But seeing as youre messing with chems its highly dangerous eapecially if the bath corrodes

Proving the propagation of sonic waves actually does penetrate. With a 99.68% continues flow thru the medium. Sonic is well above vibration, and yet is vibration.

    There is no way I could in my opinion waste my valuable time going thru a crazy process like this guy did!!! Not to mention handling acid and chemicals from 👹, and breathing the fumes, cancer city. I have been buying gold and silver for the last 25 years or so. My wife will be inheriting a S load of Gold and silver from her parents, they are 95 & 91 yo. Either way, interesting video. My wife thinks I waste my time in CZcams. I beg the difference!!! I learn a heck of a lot in the Tube!! Curious Minds want to KNOW. I’m a retired US Army Senior Warrant Officer and Blackhawk Pilot 26 years and 8 years flying EMS helicopters. I called it quits in 2016, way too dangerous! I am very fortunate that I never was shot out of the sky in combat, got hit and had big holes though. EMS flying was actually much more dangerous, single Pilot Captain, 2:00 am in the morning, overcast sky’s, night vision goggles and every obstacle out there just waiting to snag me. That really sucked!!!
    It was a great job though flying helicopters for over 36 years, best manual labor, my hat is off to those hard workers. Again thanks for taking the time to put this video together buddy, God Bless

    Surely there must be some easier method for removing the gold foil - such as Electrolysis. I understand that each finger would need to be electrically connected by anode / cathode. But (if the anode and cathode are rotating in a vessel immersed in a solution with all of the gold-bearing fingers), they will eventually all make electrical contact over time. Less chemicals. Less work. I'm not a Chemist, but enjoyed watching this time-consuming extraction of less than 2g of impure gold. Reading the comments below, the costs of extraction (by this method) includes electricity / chemicals / gases for heating. Also, we must include the number of man-hours!!

    • @nicholasanello4578
      @nicholasanello4578 Před 4 lety

      if you grind everything down, circulate the pregnant solution, and then stop circulating, the elements will settle into contiguous slices of [blah blah blah and gold, copper, etc] thus removing the need to tediously jumper clip each finger. If you use a windmill do mill everything down, there goes the electrical cost involved. if the electrolysis is powered by solar and or wind, drop your costs even further. I've been reading up on electro-extraction for a few years now, and while there's a limit to my scientific knowledge, I've amassed a fair number of documents on the subject, and would love to pick your brain on the subject?

    • @pixelpatter01
      @pixelpatter01 Před 3 lety

      You missed the whole point; he doesn't want the gold to dissolve. He even tests with the stannous chloride to make sure non is in solution. The purpose of the hydrochloric acid and peroxide is to dissolve the copper beneath the gold that forms the bond to the plastic board. The gold then just falls off.

I only did these videos to show how it's done. I normally don't process this type of scrap because the yields are so low and much waste is created.

I have an account with a precious metals refinery company. i.e. scrap gold, silver etc. I asked them about bringing escrap. they have a division that buys but you need hundreds of lbs. Curious what would happen if I clipped the boards and just burned off the waste. I'd be left with a chunk of mixed metal. tempting to send it in mixed with some gold!

      The best way I've seen is to use a hot soldering pen to scrap the foils off. I think incinerating the fiber board to recover the gold foils has been tried (not by me) unsuccessfully. The boards burn producing volumes of billowing acrid black smoke and in the end, due to the fragility of their design, the gold foils vanish in the chaos and no gold can be found amongst the ashes.
