Well, Kakashi was also the student of Minato, who in turn was Jiraiya's student. Jiraiya likely sees that to mean that Kakashi is, in a sense, *his* student as well and as such he takes pride in Kakashi's accomplishments....not to mention that Kakashi & Naruto are the only living links to Minato that Jiraiya still has, as both of Minato's other students (Obito & Rin) are, as far as Jiraiya is aware at least, dead....as are both Minato & Kushina.

@@CedricBassman Even if he wasn't trying to kill Naruto he would have still been able to use a lot of his power attempting to defend himself, and with Naruto losing himself to the tailed beast Naruto gains a significant durability boost so he would have been able to withstand more of Jiraiyas power.

in retrospect the Sannin powerscaling is so confusing... I'm not even a powerscaling kinda guy but all 3 (said to be in their primes) got sonned and lectured by Hanzo but Jiraiya is confident taking on Itachi and Kisame (while protecting a 12yr old Naruto...) I'm sure Naruto caught him off guard when the 4th tail came and I'm sure Jiraiya wasn't trying to kill him, but Orochimaru was like 40% and still took on 4 tails Naruto (older and bloodlusted) without taking on anywhere near the same kinda damage Jiraiya did
