27 HOUR LATE AMTRAK! Two Union Pacific Locomotives to the Rescue!

- Back in October of 2023, there was an Amtrak California Zephyr that was just having the worst luck. It started off with a P42 dying enroute so they got the UP AC44 unit put on the train in Denver (if I remember correctly). Then, that UP unit broke so they had to add the thundercab ACe to the train in Salt Lake City. The train accumulated so much time lost that it was over a whole day late. By the time it got into California, it was about 27 hours late with the next Zephyr right on its tail. I chased this Zephyr all the way from Reno, NV back to Davis, CA. It was a long day but a quick chase indeed. You can see the second Zephyr as the last clips in the video. That train was also cool as it had a tripleheader, three P42 locomotives. I also caught a short MSPRV at Gold Run so look out for that as well! Enjoy the video!
Locations of the 27 hour late UP doubleheader Zephyr:
Boca
Truckee
Soda Springs
Gold Run
Auburn
Sacramento (Elvas)
Davis
Thanks for watching! 👍🏼

Those freight engines look like monsters compared to amtraks normal power. It's like the P42's parents showed up to lead them home😂
Best comment 😆
but they’re not meant to be high speed
@@ItsAngelHyde Try telling that to some of the Intermodal freight trains that go screaming through my town...I've even seen them overtake amtrak trains at speed with 60 thousand tons and only 4 units! Some of those SD70-AH and ES44 variants are actually geared to run at passenger train speeds, especially on class one railroads. Not to mention the reliability factor.....yes, P42s can hit a buck-10 on a good flat out run here and there, but two tier 4 diesels pulling a load that light can hold 70+ mph steady up and down and all around any grade you throw at them like nothing was coupled to them. What they lack on the flat and level 0%grades in speed, they more than make up for every where else. Trust me, those babies can haul some @$$ 😉
@@Jennifer-K5LA ok
@Jennifer-K5LA which units are geared to go over 75 moh besides passenger units? Every es and SD unit I've been in you're luck to hit 73 mph unless you lost control going down hill. I think there was 1 that hit 117 mph but derailed and the crew had already bailed. There is no way any unit can handle going upgrade 70 mph with loaded trains. Seen many of trains lately stale out on grades because not enough horse power.
I also got this train too! Crazy on how late it was thus being behind another zephyr adding 2 zephyrs in one day
And this is why I always get the sleeper cab. So I can just lay around and listen to scanner while waiting to get there.
I was railfanning and I saw a old Loco that was probably 20 years old still working for the [E N P] company
Awesome! I saw this same train going through Davis, thought it was so cool seeing a C44ACM and sd70ace pulling an Amtrak train but couldn’t get a video of it, glad someone did!
That ACe makes those P42’s look like ants.
Beautiful mountain views of a rather unique Amtrak move. I guess, over the Sierras, you do need two engines to haul the Zephyr over the top. It must have taken a lot of running around to have caught these views. Thanks for your efforts. 🎉
The Empire Builder has been around 24+ hours late on occasion..
Great job -- many thanks!
great video ❤❤
Another excellent catch ❤
Great job! Thanks!
Excellent video Hudson!
Fantastic video, unique rescue eith beautifl camera angles (in 1980s I was on an AMTRAK, and the loco failed - Chessie System sent a GP40 to tow us along....)
Adore the train. First train trip at 1 month old in 1946. Grew up riding the Great Northern from Whitefish to Minot. My Dad worked for the Great Northern out of Whitefish. Have taken Amtrak around 2/3 of the US, several times. Want to travel from CA to New Orleans to Clemson SC to Deleware, to Chicago then Montana, Seattle and back to CA.
Love the UNION PACIFIC!!
The Amtrak itself at the end sounded like it was struggling to pull all those passenger cars away behind it. . .
Amazing catches! Nice video!👍
Awesome catch!
Love emd , union pacific, and the fresh paint on unit two, great vid thank you😊
Awesome video + catches
Kool catch excellent video my friend
I've learned many years ago to allow 1-2 extra days for train connections or ship cruises. Overnight stays at hotels can be pricey but help alleviate frustration in cases like this. Amtrak's objective is getting passengers to destinations safely, not necessarily on time.
❤ the wife and I were 11 hours late from Seattle to Chicago. That caused a problem I can't go into here. But it wasn't good. Got a voucher from Amtrak for 250. That rider should have been free❤❤.
They still got you to the destination. That voucher is vastly more than you’ll get from any airline for a similar disruption.
Their was some bad stuff at the station that happened that would not have had we been on time also they did the same to us my putting freight engines instead of passenger which go much slower. Amtrak might have enough engines for back up
i usually fly one way and take a train one way--i could care less how long the train takes--we have had numerous malfunctions over the years, longest was 15 hours or so--they stopped the train in the middle of nowhere and threw a bunch of kfc meals onboard out of a van, changed train drivers--nobody was complaining--i bought drinks, train dudes gave me a deal for everybodys cocktails,beers--it was fun--they gave me a sleeper upgrade on the sly...
Very Good Chase!
This was nice and relaxing.
Sweet video
Excelente video
❤I love the trains
That one train had three locomotives and nineteen cars. Must be going to pickup more cars.
Wow…a really late Zephyr. All the extra food and accommodations that had to be made. But, honestly, it would
have been ok with no demanding schedule. I much prefer this than being taken off the train and put on a cramped cross country bus.
One of the Amtrak engines was #27 and it was 27 hours late
Those UP Motors are definitely getting aired out. Let-em-roll.
Excellent video
Hasn't even premiered yet 🥱
@@CentralValleyRailfan8311 Do you have any videos of the steam locomotives 🚂??
Nice
That AC600CW rebuild is cool
My wish is that they bring back the body style of the F and E 3's and 7's and 9's A and B units with obviously all the modernisations .
so that front locomotive was dragging 3 slugs behind it.
Wish I was running that one
Me too. That would've been so epic!
And we in the uk moan if a train is 5 mins late !
I’ve always wondered who drives the locomotives when there’s a freight engine pulling an Amtrak? Do the freight employees drive or Amtrak? If freight how do they know when and where to stop and what rules apply to Amtrak and not freight?
Mostly it will be Amtrak Employees If an Amtrak employee is out of time at that time, they will be replaced by a freight train employee, and sometimes there will be an Amtrak employee sitting next to them.
See as UP is 1 of the reasons we don't have decent passenger rail service i won't give them too much if any credit
It isn't UP's fault Congress passed legislation over a half century ago allowing Amtrak to use their railroad tracks on their right of way for a nominal fee. What is more important, your food being delivered to regional warehouses and the utility companies coal being delivered to your nearest power plant, or someone you don't know arriving to their destination a hour or two earlier? Commerce trumps passengers when it comes to our economy...
@@ronclark9724 but it is their fault that we can't change it
Another great job sir! I actually watched the video before I commented, unlike some...lol
Thank you Scooty!! I'm glad you're "somewhat" normal!
27 hours late is a day and 3 hours late.
The final straw, is when you get passed by tomorrow’s train.
@@jaysmith1408 That's a good one.
It runs 27 hours late.
More importantly, was there any head end power while they were waiting a whole day?
Yes, one of the P42s was still supplying HEP thankfully. Surprised me they kept passengers on it and didn't just make it a deadhead move
Out of interest, would Amtrak have enough food on the train to cover the extra day.?
You know, that's a good question. I'm sure they restocked enroute for the extra day.
Hopefully one of the HEPs is working!!!
4 engines to carry 7 passenger coaches
How America doing this 😂😂
Yankee ingenuity! And a can do attitude! 🤗
To be frank Amtrak waited too long to buy a new fleet of locomotives. Amtrak should have done so when their locomotives were twenty years old ten years ago.
Who operates the engines, UP crew or Amtrak
2 SD70s is way overkill for that train
From banana countries, like the trains in Argentina, only less luxurious than Amtrak, haha
Given that Amtrak runs on rubber bands and scotch tape... it needs all the help it can get.🥵😯😩
Don't forget the zip ties 🤤
was that the texas eagle? Amtrak 21 #51
California Zephyr...
Here's my question.
Why did it take 2 UP powers to move such a small train when those same 2 power units can pull a freight 5X its length.
Amtrak doesn't keep spare power around so when there's no other Amtrak units, they have to lease locomotives from freight companies
@@CentralValleyRailfan8311 your missing my question.
Those units have 5x the power of the amtrak units
Why 2 to replace those light units
@@vincebreen3-55 if you read the description, you'd know that both of the Amtrak engines broke so they needed the UPs to rescue
@@CentralValleyRailfan8311 that still doesn't answer the question. Freight locomotives are way more powerful than passenger ones. You don't need two UP locomotives to rescue one Amtrak consist.
Because UP AC44 6898 (the second locomotive) also broke down, the only locomotive running was the first one.
Both the Amtrak locomotives are 4200 hp each, UP 6898 is an AC4400 hp, and the UP6579 is an SD70 typically a 4300 hp locomotive.
And we complain about British Rail, lol 🤣🤣 🇬🇧
If the other one was right behind them why they couldn't make it a huge train
That's what everyone was wondering too 🤷🏻♂️
@@CentralValleyRailfan8311 That might have involved some thinking.
@@edwinsinclair9853That's too much work on the railroad
The freight locomotives aren't geared to run fast like the Amtrak units.
I’ve drag raced a track across Montana and dakotas we were driving a one ton le at 80 plus mph
What date was this
October 15 2023
Why the 2 freight engines?
Read the description...
waaaa?
If you have ever ridden trains in Europe, you have to be totally disturbed at our national railway system. It’s a joke.
only 27 hours late? For AMTRAK, tha's considered right on schedule. I know from bitter experience riding AMTRAK. Happens more often than not.
This was a year ago
It wasn't, but ok. If you read the description before criticizing, I said when this was
@@CentralValleyRailfan8311 True!
American passenger locomotives are weak, and unttractive i wish they would bring back the mighty GG1 it can handel a passenger train 18 cars long unasisted at 100 miles an hour even the steam locomotive awesome machines back than.
two p42 has 8084 horsepower
🤔 it would need electrification first though ...
Agree with another commenter; GG1 required electrification. And could achieve the speeds at which it typically ran because PRR owned and maintained the tracks and scheduled all the trains on them. In my youth I saw GG1s pulling freight regularly at speeds much faster than the Amtrak trains I now ride on.
there not weak ... they are old ,all this shit is old, my friend 😅
.... That's why the Genesis are being replaced with the charger Locomotives, the genesis locomotives are at least thirty plus years old.... They're getting to the point where they're starting to break down more and more
@@jermainec2462 The GE Genesis locomotives will soon be discarded when the last new Siemens Charger locomotives are built and enter into service... While Amtrak's rolling stock tend to last forever, some of these Superliner cars are nearly 50 years in age, their locomotives don't last as long...
Amtrak sucks
