It actually can be good business sense to avoid selling in some jurisdictions. For example, if the regulatory compliance to sell there would be far too expensive, more then you would most likely recoup from the size of your target audience there.
But for something that sold like hotcakes like Helldivers 2, that probably isn't the case.
I have seen way too many people online calling these countries "irrelevant" and trying to downplay grievances, calling them "Vocal minority."

it's believed that the axing of regions was steam doing damage control with the refund's. We may never find out, but it seems the most likely reason cause some of the region blocks were weird.
the issue of knowledge is irrelevant. Refunds should be mandated (without being requested) in all regions
as it was clear the playerbase did not feel informed of this requirement. so saying they were informed was....dishonest.
If they decided to do that, they'd be target of multiple lawsuits.

i would say valve doing nothing is not really true. A lot of stuff being done by valve is in the background like controller support, you can do a lot more of customization even if the game itself does not support different button mapping.

While theres no proof of this happening here with helldivers 2... upsets and hate-mongering like this is pretty profitable, and im not talking about the "clicks on videos" conspiracy shit.
Company executives dont make most of their money off of products, it comes from stock prices. A lot of big companies will purposefully create bad will with the public so their stock prices will drop. This has 2 effects.. stock holders will panic and sell shares back.. and the company executives will buy up more shares at a lower price.
I dont know if sony execs planned that out or if its genuinely just plain and simple greed to hold everyone under the threat of losing their games..
But i do know that capitalism is illogical and solely based around unattainable greed. Stock markets should be illegal.
Having a privately owned company and not being beholden to shareholders is the special sauce. Heck, if Valve published profit figures I would not be surprised if it is in fact the most profitable private company registered in the United States.

I lost my password on my PS4 and was never able to recover it due to losing my gmail account, and google wont help with that either. This just further fuels my hatred for this type of login in/profile creation method

I mean for me it was easy after getting locked out by using a security key as a passkey then realized that Sony didn't even bother making the option of using a security key actually work because not even on my laptop worked, just gave my username and name that I have in my profile then the bot just sent me the recovery link. My heart did sink after not having my actual birth date set (because Sony doesn't need that and all those past breaches prove my point) but I managed to find a workaround which is what I just described.
So it depends on how much failsafes you have to get your account back

With regards to the Sonic film, there’s a theory that they made the original Sonic look hideous on purpose to generate backlash and raise awareness of the film. Probably not true because I’m pretty sure changing Sonic came with a delay, but not impossible either. This one isn’t that, Helldivers was already doing excellent, Sony just wanted to use that to force people to make a PSN account.

Gotta love Sony. They expected the game to require PSN, which means they deliberately put a game for sale in regions they knew couldn't run it. Their PSN network was then so garbage Arrowhead had to disable the system entirely to render the game playable. Now, as the fiscal quarter draws to a close, instead of basking in how much of a runaway success Helldivers was, they chose to press the issue to bump up PSN account numbers.
All they had to do was literally nothing and they reap the profits, yet they somehow failed that. Incompetence is the true hallmark of Sony, and their executives can wear those brown pants with pride.
If all the profits actually goes to Sony....
And it's doubly insane because they'd managed to do the thing that publishers have been desperately trying to do for years and repeatedly failing at: create a new live service game that is actually successful with players.
They could have kept it optional, given away a free blue cape to every user and a free blue armor to everyone who connected to PSN.
EVERYONE gets a cosmetic, PSN gets connected, and Sony wins.
They still win but now at what cost?
When the money a company makes isn't enough cause it's not all the money they could have made.

I didn't know that, in the UK, PSN accounts require verification of your identity for age restrictions. You have to submit a photo license, a screenshot of your face, or your contact information on a cell phone (may be more options). I don't like the idea of Playstation, with their poor internet security, to keep my private information stored on a vulnerable server.
Never side with the corpos. Indies have been blowing up more and more lately because of decisions just like this. Most indies make money to make games, not make games to make money.

Yeah sorry, I wasn't trying to make light of the situation these corpo swine are putting folk who've bought the game in, just more of a comment on how I WAS going to pick this game up in summer when I have more free time, but if this is how Sony's operating now, even with studios under their umbrella, I know who not to buy games from going forward. Even if they end up backpedaling this, you know they'll do it again just like how Ubi patch crap in months after release. This future sucks.
It's less about money and more about provoking people. Basically you being negatively emotional about things is more important than your money. Why, because on a metaphysical level, negative entities feed off it. That's basically their food and means for survival. So they will always do provocative things. Since I realize that I don't bother to get upset about anything and I expect stuff like this, always.
Something that Yong forgot to mention and I want to plug it in here.
If you get denied by the refund system on steam. Keep trying because eventually they will have to manually look at why are you requesting your refund so many times. Let Valve know that the game that you bought for - with your hard earn cash is not playable anymore due to it not being available in your respective country.
Another option is to go through the ticket system to get a live person. It's a pain to figure out how to do but it is possible. This is more likely to get you a refund.

Automated system only look at hour play and made quick decision on that only.
However the capacity of automated system to handle requests are limited and thus the overflow refund requests may have to be decided by human staff which is more humane.
Already did 2 tickets, got denied by 2+ hours rule, will go for 3rd attempt, who knows which ticked will do the charm :), as already myself and friends dropped playing it, but while we played, i loved it, good times

I've played 80 hours and I've probably only 2 or 3 people in all that time that actually ruined my experience so all I did was leave and within a minute was in another game without them. Won't surprise me if this was part of a long-term plan to make Steam players buy a PSN subscription.

What they could've done is just have PSN sign in as optional whilst attaching a cool looking armor set on it, this would drive players to sign in willingly for the armor set rather than cause this burning dumpster fire

All it needed was a banner in the superstore:
"Link your copy of Helldivers 2 to PSN now for an exclusive Cape and 100 free war bond medals!"
And this would have been problem solved. The people who didn't have a problem with it would still sign up, Sony would get their numbers up, and everybody would still be able to play. Done and done.

I done even see how this will make Sony more money. Some people cannot play the game now. They are going to try to get a refund since the game is a fucking brick to them. I think this will hurt sales more than help them. I truly don't understand the thought process behind this decision.

@@TransientWitch If anything, this is going to be a fascinating case study on whether or not community revolt and game boycotts actually work. I know Steph has been on record saying that game boycotts generally don't work because if it's from a popular franchise folks will buy and play it anyway. That being said, I legit cannot remember the last time a game as well received as Helldivers 2 took such a massive nosedive in community opinion.

If Sony wanted more PSN account signups they could've offered some free cosmetics for PSN account or triple XP or something. They could have use positive market forces to incentivize their desired outcome. Instead they used corpo-imperial mandates and expected everyone to just take their terms and fall in line. That's not how commerce works.

1) The lack of data security.
2) PSN is only available in 69 countries.
3) The PSN ToS allow Sony to sell the data whenever they feel like it (if you don't believe me just read the ToS section 6.1.)
4) In about half of the 69 countries with PSN access people still cannot make a PSN account because Sony decided for whatever reason that a PSN account can only be created using a Playstation, not via PC. Many PC gamers don't own a PS - we want to play on PC after all, not on PS.
Sony has to be pretty desperate for new PSN accounts to pull this kind of scumbagery.

This needs to go into a class action lawsuit. This is beyond scummy and a breech of contract. If you can't get a refund after 2 hours of play, then it must be illegal for them to change the contract after 2 hours of purchase. In essence this is theft of all the countries now unable to play what they paid for. Apparently they didn't want EA to have the title of worst company. They deserve everything they have coming to them.

I already have a PSN account, and over the course of this situation, I was on the fence of just biting the bullet and linking my account or uninstalling. I don’t think the linking is that big of a deal for me, at least, but the fact Sony sold this game in countries that soon won’t have access to it was what ultimately brought me to uninstalling. The game was the most fun I’ve had with a game this year, but I’m not siding with the scummy corpo this time
You're right on that. Don't support a publisher that takes away the fun for people living in places where access to games is already difficult as is.

Truly believe we are in the dark ages of gaming. Theres nothing interesting to play for the most part, innovation has slowed to only a few studios, prices and gouging have increased along with overall corruption. I thought the last few years were the dark ages but it seems we just keep going down the tunnel with no end in sight.

Indie games are the way to go these days. Any AAA game isn't worth buying nowadays, at least not until 5 or so months after releasing when the damn game is complete.

Games that require you to make additional account to play them and/or install a secondary launcher are genuinely the most aggravating thing to me. I want to play a game not add another password and account to keep track of so my data doesnt get stolen
use password manager, too many none gaming services nowadays required an account. if you want physical security, get a security key on top of it. carry one with you, put one in bank safe, and another one in remote safe accessible location.

i avoid those types of games ever since u-play became a thing but i didnt pay attention and bought state of decay 2 which had GFWL, and got screwed by microsoft when they decided i had suspicious behavior (never specified what was it), they then proceeded to demand i upload a picture of my real ID if i wanted my account unbanned.
i left a negative review and asked steam to delete the game form my library because they didnt want to refund it even though i explained the whole ID thing.

I used to be a Sony fan up until the day I stuck a music disk into my computer and Sony installed a rootkit which basically made my computer useless. First they denied, then they dragged their feet, then they issued a bogus fix.
Sony has not received a single penny from me since then. I had a house full of Sony electronics back then. The only Sony devices I have left are my PS3 and an active antenna…. Both of which I bought used.
