Fantastic comparison Steven. Pricing for both seems very reasonable. Seems like it comes down to the light weight, breathability and durability of the Pro vs the great fit and comfort of the Pulsar Trail.
Right on. Thanks, Sage!
awesome review!
Thank you!
Thanks, nice comparison! I already ordered the Saucony Xodus Ultra but the PT captured my interest too, and it’s $20 cheaper. May give it a try depending on how the Xodus feels.
Thanks. I am testing the Xodus Ultra now too.
Great review and great video, Steven! I've only tried the PTP and largely because the Ciele collab they did looks SO sick. I like the shoe, it reminds me a lot of the S/LAB Ultra 3 with the sock gaiter and upper. I feel like the PT is similar to the Sense Ride line, and I really wish Salomon would just kind of combine these two and do a more "plush" shoe but with a built-in gaiter and wider fit. It would be the perfect 100k+ race shoe, no? I feel like their S/LAB line tends to perform better, but always runs so freaking narrow (which doesn't usually work for me). Have you looked into the Phantasm or the S/LAB Pulsar?
I totally agree with that, Sam! Yeah I’m supposed to be getting the phantasm at some point to test. I would like to get the S lab pulsar!
I got into the Pulsar Trail when it was released. I really loved the cushy ride and the TPU plate added some spring in my stride. They fit my feet well and are very breathable. Traction was ok but when it came to more technical trails they could use some help. Anything wet and I found them not to trustworthy. Once I got 200 miles on them the tread was shot and they became a rails to trails shoe. I've worn the Sense Rides 3 and 4 and like this fit much better. If they improve the tread wear, I'll be back in them.
Thanks for the long term update!
I have Pulsar Trail PRO, and 100% satisfied. 250 km, no issue, shoes of pleasure...I tried Altra Olympus, Peregrine, Hoka one one, but this Salomon is awesome..
Awesomesauce!
Great job Steven! Any chance we can get a comparison video between the Speedgoat and the Pulsar Trail?
Thank you, Tom. Maybe… lol
Thanks for this! Despite thinking it’s going to be too narrow, I am still going to give the Trail a try, I think. The reviews are just too good.
Also: first 50k trail race in the rear view now. Saturday - Grizzly Mountain Nipika Ultra. 7.5hours of rain, mud, amazing views, amazing people. Canada is a long way to go but if you do make it up here, I’m sure you’ll find something fun to do.
The Pulsar Trail are definitely worth a try; just make sure wherever you purchase from has a a good return policy if you are concerned about the width.
How did the 50k go? Good luck at the Grizzly Mountain Nipika Ultra! I would love to make it to Canada for some races.
@@UltraTrailSteven it went better than expected! Admittedly I expected it to be horrible as I hadn’t trained as much as I wanted. Stunning trails, 3600’ of elevation over the course, amazingly well marked and staffed. It was a great day other than the constant drizzle and the 68°F weather. Lol
@@chad.haggerty awesome!
I've got some of the standard pulsar trails myself and agree that they are an awesome shoe! Had just under 200 miles and still performing well
Have you had a chance to test the la sportiva jackals? I'm considering these next and a review would be great.
Keep up the good work as always man
Glad to hear you are having success with the PT's too! No, I have not tried any of the La Sportiva shoes. I would like to.
I guess one of my worries is with this plate that’s in there cause I’m in North Georgia and I’m running rocks and roots and some real technical trails in the southeast. How would that plate work in such an environment now I know you lived in Tennessee, so you know is it mostly shoe design just for like rolling buffed out trails or is it for everything? Just curious mostly more minimal type shoes but this year I’m getting ready to do the cruel jewel 50 and I was thinking about a little bit more stacking something maybe with a higher drop next to my INOV-8 zero drop
Yeah these are fine on technical trails, at least for me they were. The plate is nylon, so it’s not as rigid as carbon fiber. I’ve used these on some really technical trails.
Hey Steven! May I ask you what shoes you have enjoyed running trails and wet terrain most this year? I live in Oregon and I’m looking for a new trail shoe that is light with good grip that I can run long distances in. I only experience and trail running shoes has been in Nikes unfortunately! Thank you in advance for your help!👍
For wet terrain… hmm… probably the Hoka Torrent 2. Good grip with 5mm lugs. The Saucony Peregrine 12 would probably be ok, but the heel isn’t great
The high arch on the pulsar trail has been causing me a lot of trouble. Even after 2kms my arches feel like they are under a lot of strain, almost becoming too tired/strained/at times painful, to keep running. Frustrating because they feel great to walk in and really good for the first 1.5kms. Any advice on overcoming the pain? I've ran in the same size Speedcross' for years and never had any problems.
I've got the GTX version, and the plastic on the upper around the toe box also started to peel off after a couple of days.
Hm I’m not sure. I wonder if it’s the GTX version because I haven’t heard of anyone having a high arch issue. For me, the regular Pulsar Trail feels great!
Same here, inexplicable pin all over my feet even after relatively short runs. The shoe does nothing for me. I’m just gonna keep them for daily miles on dirt roads, then throw them away when they’re done (which does not seem to be far down the road).
Haha still love that one...wish I could afford it
I love the pulsar trail.
It’s a great shoe!
Running on forest trails I would go with the anti debree collar any day.
If they are dry trails, it helps a bit. Honestly though, the Pulsar Trail have been great too
@@UltraTrailSteven I think the collar helps alot! Fallen spruce needles and small twicks on top of foot tall undergrowth will make their way into regular shoes very easily.
Hmmm Salomon pulsar trail vs Saucony xodus ultra in Boulder Colorado?
In Boulder I would go Pulsar Trail.
@@UltraTrailSteven awesome! Thanks I had Saucony Peregrine 12s before and liked them except I had to tape the back of my foot. Weird question…I’m ordering the pulsars online should I Size it the same as the Peregrine 12s I had?
Yeah the Peregrine 12 heel collar was a real issue for me too. Yes same size should be fine. It was for me
@@UltraTrailSteven you’re tha man! Thanks buddy and I hope to see you on a trail sometime
I one day dream of owning a shoe that doesn’t have any hot spots!
It is a rare but beautiful thing!
Zoot Delmar has the BEST tread! ;-) 🌊🏞️
