On 27 May, 2020 a loud sound from the Baghjan Oil Field was reported and confirmed by the residents of Tinsukia town, located 12 kilometres from the Oil Field. As the natural gas gushed out of the well over the next few days, the sound persisted.
Well no. 5 in the Baghjan Oil Field burst into flames on June 09, 2020 near the Dibru-Saikhowa National park in Tinsukia District of eastern Assam. The fire destroyed any and every village and their livelihoods on its way.
As the wind carried the leaked gas, it condensated and affected local agricultural crops and plants, along with the local wetland, Maguri Motapung Beel, where the carcass of a Gangetic Dolphin was found covered in oil. The rain that immediately followed the leak acted as a catalyst to the contamination resulting in significant environmental damage to the area. Firefighter and other technicians who were working to douse the fire, suffered from injuries and some also lost lives.
According to news reports, as of September 2020, almost 500 people are still residing in the relief camps and the sounds of the gas leak and ongoing fire is still audible in the camp site.
Its been more than 100 days, Baghjan is still burning. This poem is a tribute to those lives that we lost in our fight against a man-made disaster which also had a detrimental affect on the flora and fauna of the area.
