Imagine being one of the people in the studio when Eleanor voiced Maleficent's laughter. That must have sent the chilliest chills to them, I would guess.
There's an interview with Mary Costa (Aurora) who said that Eleanor was a very petite woman, not threatening at all. She and the other actors listened in once while Eleanor was recording and Costa said you would have thought she was ten feet tall.

I had tuberculosis too and I can tell how painful it was for her if having TB and still had to work. damn, the fever and coughing🥲 but some ppl might have a little different symptoms due to the stage of the TB. RIP sweet lady🙏🏿

Even though I have never met this women I sure as hell have alot of respect for her.
Fun Fact: Eleanor Audley actually gets to lay claim to voicing all three of the original Disney Princess Villains, as along with Lady Tremaine and Maleficent, she also voiced the Evil Queen in a 1949 audiobook version of Snow White. Also in that same audio book, Snow White was voiced by another Princess Eleanor Audley tormented, Ilene Woods the voice of Cinderella.
She voiced the Evil Queen, I didn't knew this, well, I know that in 1937 she was voiced by Lucille La Verne, but I did not knew there was a version that she voiced the Evil Queen, I will look for the version

My grandma on my mom’s side of the family sounds like Eleanor Audley, and sadly she is a lot like her “mean” characters. She’s still alive, she turns 104 this year.
Of all the Disney villains, Maleficent ranks as the absolute worst, but best. She puts a curse on newborn that will manifest in sixteen years, dragging out the agony endured by the king and queen. And does it with such sophistication. No wonder she's always the last enemy of every Disney video game!
Eleanor made the GREATEST female villain! SCARED me when I was a kid!! Maleficent is one of my favourite Disney villains and I CAN'T imagine anyone else playing the part! She really got to me!! JEEZ... the SCARY voice and WICKEDLY WICKED laugh were unique and perfect for each role she played! I ❤ the references to Betty White, btw! I'd DEFINITELY prefer spending time with Betty White in a pet shop, or at the zoo, over any of Eleanor's characters!! (if they were in real life) lol. Betty White was a sweetheart!🌟💕

Not all of the pictures are of Elanor Audley. Three times we see Mary Jane Croft instead of Elanore. And there was no change in Elanor's voice in her performance as Maleficent.
I saw her on tv shows throughout my childhood and always liked her snooty rich lady performance. She really made Maleficent a powerful character and the stepmother in Cinderella was fantastic. You can see how they used her image when they drew the characters and it made them so convincing. Thanks for the video about this great lady. Even as a kid I thought she was very regal looking.

To Disney Villain fans, it's amazing to note that outside of Disney, she was mainly known as a comedian.
You watch her in Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies or the Dick Van Dyke show, you may be surprised how funny she was playing snobby but ignorant society ladies.
I was very surprised checking out her TV roles, she's actually really funny!
You have to check her out in How To Marry A Millionaire. She plays an actress who gets drunk and it's absolutely hilarious.
Such a rich and beautiful voice and stellar presence. I absolutely love her performance as Maleficent and definitely her performance as Lady Tremaine is one for the ages.

She was the best... no doubt. My favorite Disney villain is Maleficent and always will be!! It was her voice and cackle that I used/"channeled" every year when I had to do a creepy laugh for a haunted attraction during Halloween.❤
I have been nightly watching the old TV reruns of Green Acres and Beverly Hillbillies on MeTV and I am always thrilled when I see that Eleanor guest starred in an episode. 🤩
By far my favorite of the Disney fairy tale rewrites. Maleficient is simply the definitive Disney villain. Wonderful character, she defined what a villain is to me. Thanks for bringing her VA to light!

There was one picture you used repeatedly from I Love Lucy that was not Audley. The actress in the black pillbox hat had a very distinctive whiney soprano voice that was nothing like Audley’s rich alto!

Maleficent’s reasons to lay the curse on Sleeping Beauty wasn’t petty. I think she had a great reason. She was disrespected.
Good point, but to murder someone over it? A bit of an over reaction imo.....then again shes evil, so it makes sense for her.
The fairies are more like goddesses of nature guaranteeing through there blessing if well treated a life of prosper and good fortune. Whether tending towards good or evil. You just don't offend one by not inviting her, especially if she's considered one of the most powerful ones.
Even a benevolent spirit can retaliate because of this. A evil one of course goes beyond cursing you and generations to come. Ironically in Perrault and Grimm version the king not so much to blame because not only they thought the wicked one was long dead. He didn't even have enough golden dinner plates lol!
In this setting the fairies as guests of honor bestowing blessings on the newborn royalty, the offended fairy places the curse on her as a much more effective punishment towards the ungrateful king.Most well-known tale like this is myth of Perseus. Queen Cassiopeia calling herself and her children more beautiful than Nereids and therefore punished by Poseidon: her children slain in front of her eyes and Andromeda chained as offering to sea monster Cetus (in live action movies the Kraken).
This! Also giving the dialogue the fairies IMO contributed in this. Maleficent hoped it was oversight by the king, this call back to people not knowing her whereabouts, maybe even dead in Perrault. It's Merryweather claiming her not wanted, while the queen oddly inquiring: 'And you're not offended you're excellency?'

Yes her voice is calm, collective, calculating, and oozing with confidence and best yet, chilling and convincing. When asked how she’s able to come up with that voice for the role, she answered, “Oh dear, what a awkward situation. Did you hear that, my pet? Oh they’re hopeless. A disgrace to the forces of evil. Okay listen well, all of you. Fools! Idiots! Imbeciles! This is my normal everyday talking voice!” LOL
This was an Incredible Masterpiece Video for The Late Elenor Audley (1905 - 1991). Eleanor Audley did a Legendary Performance Bringing Lady Tremaine and Maleficent to Life.
This was so cool to watch as Maleficent is my favorite of all Disney villains. I mean that quote where she says "You poor simple fools thinking you defeat me, ME! The mistress of all evil. Well here's your precious Princess!" followed by the cackle gives me chills everytime. Imagine being in the room when you hear that quote, or "Now shall you deal with me oh Prince, and all the powers of Hell!"
I love Friedel Schuster as Lady Tremaine in the german dubbing the best. But Audley's Maleficent is overwhelming!

I am a fan of Lucille Ball's show "My Favorite Husband," which was retooled as "I Love Lucy," and on the radio show she played Liz's (Lucy's) meddlesome mother-in-law. The pic in thos video from I Love Lucy was Mary Jane Croft not Audley though (who did appear in two late episodes).
The fairy godmother in Cinderella please, and also the three fairies in sSleeping Beauty. From voice, to actors and performances. Which of course, were all magical. :)

Maleficent is my favorite Disney villain precisely because of Eleanor's voice work. I really don't think we see another villain to match her until Pat Carroll's work as Ursula in 1989 for "The Little Mermaid". May they both rest in peace 🙏❤

Really interesting post about the Eleanor Audley who played 2 of the best Disney villains ever! I am wondering though if the actress in the photo that mentioned “I Love Lucy” might not be Doris Singleton, who played Lucy’s frenemy Caroline Appleby.
I think it is. Theres a few pronunciation mistakes as well. Some of these early episodes had alot of those types of mistakes. If you check out my corrections videos, they correct alot of them at least
I've often thought that if The Duchess appeared in Disney's Alice in Wonderland, Eleanor would've been fantastic. Anyhow, job well done with this video.

The picture you showed in I Love Lucy was actually Mary Jane Croft. At the end of the original series when the family moved to Connecticut. Elenor was a judge for the ill fated tulips, not Lucy’s neighbor.
She was also the homeowner the Ricardos bought the house in Westport from.
Eleanor Audley, also played Cinderella's wicked stepmother as well as Madame Leota at the original Haunted Mansion attraction

Sleeping beauty, still a classic, even to this day. Her voicework in that movie is amazing, and up until now I didn't even know who she was. Well I do now, R.I.P. Eleanor. To bad Disney can't make a movie worth a damn now, like the so-called remake of "Snow White"

A role I WISH SO MUCH she could have played would've been a movie about the Barker Gang and Ma Barker.
I could almost see her being motherly and caring one minute, and vicious, bloody, and cruel totting around some machine gun the next.
It would've been a live action take on her animated characters and very possibly could've topped Bonnie & Clyde and all gangster movies of the time.

Marvelous tribute to this character actress. Narration is beautifully delivered, so it is shocking to hear bunglings at 4:17 "Bodine" and 4:46 "Eunice".
yes, these early videos have a lot of pronunciation mistakes, if you watch some of my correction episodes I correct some of those. you might notice that once we change narrators the pronunciation mistakes practically disappear. I had a friend doing it for free for the first year or two, and they had to move on to other things. He didn't have time do to pronunciation research, and I write, research, and edit the episodes in my free time so I wasn't able to catch a couple mistakes even though some are super obvious. Not an excuse just an explanation. Someday I hope to come back to these episodes and do them better, If the channel ever takes off to the point where I can put more time in them I would love to get them more polished! I'm glad you like the episodes despite the mistakes!! Please don't hesitate to point them out, especially on the newer videos, I make a correction video every year to kind of set the record straight and I love to hear about things I may have missed in my research!
