YT showed me your video and I really enjoyed it, not only for the 2 AMAZING finds but also because these days it's just really nice to see such nice, gentle, unforced interaction between a lad and his dad doing something interesting with no 'mad' gimmicks or reactions.
If I'm not mistaken, Dad used to be in the military.
I love that father & son are out doing something fun together!
Found your channel today and I had tried some of the magnet fishing videos, and must tell I feel yours is the best, calm, not hysterical laughter, you get excited when you find something interesting but you’re not crazy! Thanks
That’s great that you found our channel, pleased to hear you are enjoying our videos 😊
You 2 are great together. Your father respects you and you him.
As a kid in the 1940s we would walk along the railways looking for those large rail nails, we would lay them on the rail lines and once a train had run over them they were flattened in to perfectly balanced throwing knives, we would also sharpen one side on suitable stones.
That sounds cool Henry thanks for sharing your story with us! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
Finally, a new video! You shouldn't have been gone for so long, all your subscribers really missed you, I'm sure.
Among the many videos about magnet fishing, I personally watch only yours with great interest, probably because you really have real interesting finds and you are very nice people.
I agree, nothing worse than clickbait. When I see a video from these guys I get a cup of tea on and chill for half hour
That’s great to hear that you are finding our videos interesting 👍
The pieces at 1:42 and 9:36 are "riser" (i think this is the word, i'm not a native english speaker) produced during the Aluminothermic welding of rail tracks, which are cut off after cooling. There are many images and videos of the process.
George had great findings today!
yes,,I did that job for nearly 20 yrs
Thank you for telling us what that may be
Just saw your comment after posting... Thank you, I have been wondering what those were since I first found one several years ago
Correct as I did this type of work.
I'm glad someone knew what those were. After I read your comment, I looked it up on Google Images and found a diagram showing the end view of the rail with the mold around it. That view shows the same shape of the items found in the canal.
My father told me about the thermite welding process of railroad track when I was a kid, but I've only seen it done in videos, never in person.
Thanks for explaining what those are!
That bar-shot dumbbell is amazing, never seen that before and it's something that could never be found here in the US. Even here in Virginia, projectiles like that just are not found. Great vid!
Hi Steven yes it is amazing!
We are fortunate in the U.K. to have so much history. Pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
The hell is a bar-shot??
@@tomatoisred6966
Bar shot is two cannonballs connected to each other by a bar. The idea is , when shot out of a cannon instead of a single ball shooting at the enemy there is a devastating spinning contraption which can take out a ships mast and rigging.
There was also chain shot which was similar only a chain was used instead of a bar .
Great finds. I’d love to see what the lamp looks like cleaned up/restored.
Hi Sarah we are currently in the process of restoring the lamp so you will get to see it soon. We have found out that the lamp is a railway lamp, it is a vintage signal post lamp. They originally dropped into a lamp housing at the top of a signal post, the light shining through the coloured spectacle to indicate red or green, depending on the position of the signal. It is fitted with a Welch Patent burner, designed to burn for 8 days unattended on a single fill of paraffin. The company that made it we believe is Lamp Manufactures & Railway Supplies Dorking.
Dad's alittle salt at the end, saying to son, you wouldn't have got that without dad's help.
Quality Son&Dad Time..
Yes I think he was definitely jealous of my finds on this occasion 🤣🤣🤣
@@Magneticg understand 👍 I have kids..
Hello from Ohio.Happy to see you guys back. You always find such amazing stuff. Thanks for letting us be a part of the adventure 😊
It was good to be back out Donald we had a fantastic day! Thanks for watching 👍
The lamp is a signal lamp interior. They would have been put inside a case which sat behind the aspect on a semaphore signal. You'd have to light each one in your section before it got dark, all up ladders too!
Semaphore is just a traffic light correct? Or a railway signal light?
Thanks so much for the info plus explanation Brandon it’s much appreciated! We are currently in the process of restoring the lamp and will be showing everyone it once it’s finished. Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
Thank you for informing us about the lamp.
This is fascinating
Thank you for the info Brandon. Very interesting. Never gets old learning about new things.
I'm envious of that oil lamp , what a beauty that thing is. Lucky you.
Hi Don yes it is a beauty we are currently in the process of restoring it. Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
I cannot beleive i missed this video! Its so wonderful to see both of you two again, my George has grown! He is growing up to be quite a handsome young man. Please do continue making your videos often again, you are truly missed when we dont see you often.
Your friend from Oregon 🇺🇸
Patricia
These two are actually enjoying what they're doing and are fascinated by everything they pull up. The fact its a dad with his son makes it even more entertaining.
We're watching this video right now from Florida USA. We magnet fish here. We have to be mindful of the gators though, lol.
We've learned a lot from watching you guys, and we enjoy seeing your close relationship. It's refreshing and sweet. Stay safe and thanks for sharing!
...Annette & Tonya
Thank you for your comment Annette & Tonya, pleased to hear you are enjoying our videos! That’s great that you both magnet fish, we are fortunate the U.K. not to have gators to avoid 😬 Take care, Kev & George 😊
That barshot is epic, and I'm pretty sure that the latter was from a barge, especially if you find that the glass is coloured red on one side and blue on the opposite. I'd love to see the lantern cleaned up. What a great day for George!
Hi James yes the bar shot was epic!
We are currently in the process of restoring the lamp,, we have found out that the lamp is a railway lamp, it is a vintage signal post lamp. They originally dropped into a lamp housing at the top of a signal post, the light shining through the coloured spectacle to indicate red or green, depending on the position of the signal. Peeves or log roller
9:30 mark is what you call a Thermit Weld , molten metal reservoir . The other part found earlier with a tail forms the other side . It is the left over metal , after the molten metal cools down . The wide part , is the head of the rail and the tubular parts run from the rail foot , up to the head. It is sheared off with a machine while red hot . When cold they are broken away with a sledge hammer and discarded while the top and sides are ground flat . I did this Thermit Welding for 15 years .
Thermite (UK spelling) is a mix of powdered iron and (usually) aluminium. It is poured into what is best described as a mold around the end of two section of railway rails. When ignited it burns like a massive sparkler and it melts and fills the join between two sections of rail. What you have pulled up is the excess extrusion of the metal mix. Thermite was used extensively in incendiary bombs due to the long burn time and intense heat produced.
@@Swaggerlot Or you can just do a search for thermite or thermit welding on youtube. I've seen these videos, it is like the heat of the sun coming down out of that can.
No one asked
Thank you so much for this information and the explanation it’s much appreciated! We had no idea what they were! Thanks for watching 👍
Thermite is a pretty cool process. During war time, it was used to disable abandoned machinery during withdrawal. The "bomb" would be set above the engine of the machinery, ignited, and it would cut through the engine to stop its use. I believe they would cut barrels of big guns as well to prevent the enemy from using them back on yourself. Something Barry Jr had no idea of when leaving ...stan.
If that is a Bar Shot it could be from the 17th Century. Great find.
Hi ToM we had it looked at by a marine specialist who has confirmed it’s a bar shot! It was a great find 👍
I have heard people call that big nail a 'rosehead' nail.
Thanks for the info it’s much appreciated! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
Great show Kev and George thanks for cleaning our waterways lads great stuff
Pleased you enjoyed the video Steven 👍
@@Magneticg thanks lads tight lines 👍
If you watch a video on thermite welding on the railways you will see the weld metal in the sand molds and that is the gun shaped objects you have found. It is just metal which is left from the casting process.
Thanks for this information John it’s much appreciated, we will have a look! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
That piece of the bridge would be very cool cleaned up and framed or mounted to old barn board as a piece of history. All very cool stuff.
Yes it would we have kept it! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
Hello from Canada 🇨🇦! Great finds lads!!! I believe the metal rod you found was used for barbed wire WW1! Lots were surplus after the war and farmers would buy them for temporary stake fencing! Good luck on your next magnet fishing adventures! 👍
Thanks for the info John it’s much appreciated! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
@Magneticg love watching these magnet fishing videos. I was going to give it a go myself. Until I found out its actually illegal to magnet fish in the uk.
Unless its on enclosed privately owned waters.
Some amazing treasures, and wonderful filming. Thank you guys so much for sharing 😊
Hi Caroline yes we did find some amazing treasures! The lantern turned out to be a vintage railroad lamp, we are currently restoring it so keep your eyes open for it when it’s finished 😊
Amazing lamp with the glass intact even!!
Yes it was an incredible find, it turns out it’s a vintage railroad lamp. We are currently in the poof restoring it 👍
Hey guys, just watched the video and I thought the balls was for weight lifting and after that I don’t have a clue? Lol! I love watching father and son it’s funny the things you do or say to each other. I remember one video where dad got the really good smelling cologne and he went running to you and was pouring on your head 😂 I laughed so hard for that. Not wanting to keep going you might remember me with a different name on here it was Jenn shepherd now that was a friend but now it’s my name. TCY .Peace Out 🤟😎
George has never forgiven me for pouring the perfume all over him 😂
George be thankful dad was there to pull out ur bar shot! He's the strongest magnet fisher I've ever seen!!! So great to see you all back at it again. Love from Kentucky!!!
Yes, you wouldn't have got it out without dad

First iam glad to see the both of you guys back, those 3 similar looking items that looked like guns at first glance look like old pennant or flag holders that might have been mounted to the sides of old ships or barges , sometimes they would also hold lighted lamps to navigate at night
Sash weights

Wow, amazing find that was. George is getting very clever now and knows about what he is finding. I bet there is a lot more good stuff to come out along that canal.
Yes there’s definitely some more good stuff in that stretch for sure, it’s the oldest man made waterway in the U.K. it was cut out by the Romans in 150 AD! We’ll be BACK!
The things that looked like a gun at first look to me like the things they wrap rope around to keep the boat tied to the dock.
beautiful bar shot. very well preserved
Yes it was a beautiful bar shot! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍

@Magnetic g sounds great, looking forward to seeing it once you have it completed
That’s definitely not a bar shot canon ball! It’s way to big. It’s a 20lb dumbbell
Good to hear from you Steve, it’s a bar shot according to the marine specialists that looked at it for us. The National Maritime Museum put us in touch with them. Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
So happy you’re back on. Missed you.
It was good to be back out Peggy I’ve been so busy with work. Hope you enjoyed the video 😊
I thought nothing could top the bar shot, and then you pulled up the lantern! Great job!
I know George was n fire that day Murl! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
@ 11:40 as they are cast iron they are not for hitting or chipping. They look to me to part of either ornamental railings or perhaps were boot scrapers, like those that were set in concrete by an entrance door. and at 12:41 that is called a "fencing pin" typically used for holding barrier tape, or wire, or in the early days picket fencing, now used a lot for temporary plastic barriers.
Thanks for your help Chris it’s much appreciated! We are beginning to believe that the mystery objects are the off cuts from the thermite welds on the railway tracks. We have hand so many people in the comments now telling us that’s what they are. Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
You don't do many vids but when you do there always quality finds, well done and great to see you back.
More to come Bob, looking forward to seeing what we will find in 2023! Thanks for watching 👍
Hi the 3 items you’ve found are from welds that has been cast in the rail way track, it’s the over flow (vent risers) from the cast weld.

Yes you were very lucky Joseph, you’ll have those memories for a lifetime! Pleased you are enjoying our videos 👍
Well that was the best 22 minutes I’ve had this year so far. I too thought it was a barbell for weightlifting. You say it was fired from a cannon? I would not want to be in the path of that nor do I want to think what it could do to what ever it hits.
That lantern is absolutely brilliant. Cleaned up and restored I bet it could get a hundred pounds or even loads more to a serious collector.
Nice finds both of you. Love those fishing lures too.
Can’t wait for the next video. ❤your videos.

Happy New Year to George and Dad! Wow, starting off with a bang(joke intended) - Bar-shot - and that great lamp. Excellent stuff. It would be so cool to get dates on those. Some interesting finds today, I'd love to see that Lantern cleaned up.
Alternative thought for the Bar Shot... A very similar thing used to be used on manual levers for changing track points on the railways. It was like a counterweight on the lever to help move very heavy sections of points.

Amazing Finds!!!! Good To See Ya Back!!!! Thanks For The Video!!!! Safe Travels!!!!!😮👍😎💯
We did have some amazing finds! Pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
Those things look like weld slag from when rail is welded together. The molds used to join rails create waste after they've been poured. The fact that you're next to a railway line supports that.
Thanks for letting us know Ian, we didn’t have a clue what they were! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 👍
Wow what amazing treasure you found this time🤩, I'm so happy for you guys. That was well worth the wait. Btw, they found an almost identical looking cannon "bar shot" in the wreck of pirate captain Blackbeard's ship -" The Queen Anne's revenge". From what I recall ,bar shot were in use up until ca 1870 in the Royal Navy and other navies , but yours could of course be a lot older than that. Just imagine what tales it might tell, if it could only speak. Btw ,how much does it weigh ? I figure it could possibly be made from 24 pounder cannon balls, but that's just a guess . The 19th century railway lamp is definitely fixer-upper material. Imho, you should, if possible, consider having it professionally restored, since it's definitely highly collectible and valuable.
Cheers guys and take care of yourselves 😊. Until next time.
Yes we did find some amazing treasures this time!
We appreciate the info re finding a bar shot from Captain Blackbeard’s Ship, didn’t know this. Do you have any reference to this so we could look?

Great video guys & camera lady. Pretty sure them 3 iron long handled punch thingies are to knock nails into the sleepers. One man would hold the punch on top of the nail while someone with a huge hammer would take a swing without hitting the holder of the nail.

Nice job on the bar shot! I think the mystery items are part to an old railing. The piece at 11:15 especially looks like the bottom part of a guardrail. I think all 3 mystery items came from the same piece of railing.

At last your back , Happy New year 😲 Hope you've made a new year resolution, of more videos, THANKS 🙏
Yes we are back Malcom yes we are aiming to do more videos this year! Happy New Year to you and your family too 👍
Your mystery item is just a weld slag where they have carried out welding to the track. It gets cut off, ground down so the track goes back to normal. Worked on the rails for 10 years, many a shift with welders 👍 (the 1.50 mark and 10 min mark)
Its the same thing. Look up railway welding pots, the cylindrical shapes should be apparent. Its all just metal waste
Correct, I'm a retired ganger from the railway.
Thank you very much for letting us know what they are, will look that up. We had no idea what they were, mystery solved 👍

Pretty sure thats an old tail lamp off the rear carrage of an old train some good interesting find lads well done happy new year by the way keep the vids coming in please we all missed you
It doesn't look like a railway lamp. It's got no mounting to fit on the lamp brackets on coaches or engines. More than likely it's canal related.
I disagree as a railway enthusiast that looks exactly like what i said as i have one similar in my collection due to working on the railways i think id know
That what I think like the old ho bo bag but instead of bag on end of stick it's a lamp like the old wood torches on the out side of castles or old stone walls!! You walk out and slide the old stick with lamp on the end !! ??

It is fitted with a Welch Patent burner, designed to burn for 8 days unattended on a single fill of paraffin. The company that made it we believe is Lamp Manufactures & Railway Supplies Dorking. There could be anything at the bottom of this canal Paul it’s the oldest man made waterway in the U.K. it was cut out by the Romans in 150 AD! We shall be BACK!

It might be worth posting a video on the restoration of the lamp, it would be interesting as a follow up. Most of the magnet fishing channels never seem to show any follow up on the items found. 👍
Yes we will definitely let you all see the lamp restored Paul!
Check out this video we made where we fully restored back to working order an old BSA air rifle that we had found in the canal, you might find it interesting. Here’s a link to the video czcams.com/video/HOb4FrPHUXk/video.html

Is the first mystery item a specialty hammer? The spur in the part that goes down into the handle.
Cannonball!!! That is spectacular!
Hi Anita yes the cannon ball was spectacular!
We found 3 of the mystery objects in total and a lot of people have told us that they are off cuts from the thermite welds on the railroad tracks. Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 😊
