I’m only 3 years into trucking so I’m not a seasoned trucker by any means, I’m pretty sure I could make an entire video series on mistakes I’ve made. The only thing I can say is that I’ve never made the same mistake twice so at least I’ve got that going for me.
Try to lean from the mistakes that others have made. I'm sure you will always have your own headaches even though make sure that you have everything in order.
Love the videos. Trucking is starting to get way too micro managed. Went from being out on the road just the truck and yourself, carrying goods across the world. (Obviously not through the ocean lol) Now it’s toll booths, weigh stations, dispatchers, and constant harassment from the law. Get treated more like a criminal than someone trying to provide for others. Almost everything comes via truck at some point.
HAR HAR HAR. Love the stories. Reminds me of my first trip into Chicago. I ended up in a place where no small town Ontario boy had any business being. Not to mention the low bridges. I still wake up in a cold sweat over that trip. Driving truck is where you can say, " I can't believe I did that" has two completely different meanings. Keep the stories coming
I just got my CDL last month from my community college, test in standard, and I'm about to start my first job. I'm 24, so just a little older then you said you were when you started. Thank you for the stories, I hope you have more I'll have to look through your channel, lots of good information in these I can learn from. Also love the Peterbilt, sounds like a beauty!!! I remember when I started with Schneider back in 08 and my first trips .like u only used gps while I went to Chicago . I learned don’t put your gps on shortest distance as It took me off the freeway onto residential streets . I did the same dumb move in Montreal too
Great video! You don't hear too many drivers admit to their mistakes. It's okay as long as you learn from them. Doesn't sound all that bad but I see that this is just part 1. Interesting to know what's on part 2, you now have my attention. LOL Just kitten ya. Back when I started driving, I don't know if they had GPS but I have always used my road atlas. The first company that I drove for you could ask for a route to the pick up and/or delivery but it would not tell you every road. They would provide you with directions but I couldn't tell ya how many times there were mistakes, weather it was a wrong turn hear or there and one time they sent me right into a low bridge like 250 yards from the delivery. I had to call the consignee to find out how to get around town. I believe it's the same place that USA Truck driver tries to make a U-turn, the video is on CZcams. I guess they never corrected the original directions with the ones that I sent them! I went under a low RR underpass here in Atlanta making a delivery, it was posted 13' 2" and the trailer was 13' 6". I did stop with a line of cars behind me blowing their horns. Luckily, the underpass had been chiseled enough for me to squeeze under. I've been pulled in a few times for DOT Inspections, most of them they were checking everyone they could. But one time, just happened to be the day I was low on hours and was doing a little bit of creative logging, also had a expired federal inspection sticker on the trailer. The DOT Officer was in his car for almost 30 minutes looking at my log book, came back and said everything looked good and sent me down the road. I see him look right at the Inspection sticker too. I did stop at several truck stops and tried to get the Inspection done, company said to keep on driving and I even had them say it on the QUALCOMM. Well I'm starting to ramble on so I'll stop here and be 10-10 on the side waiting for your next video. Stay safe and heathy out there. Spoke to ya later, Ka moan.😎
That delivery that was on the other side of the low bridge, I carefully mapped out proper directions and sent it in to dispatch afterwards for the next poor sucker-I mean driver to wind up going there. I wonder if it actually made it in the file! That’s gotta be nerve racking with the expired inspection! Closest to that I’ve got was this year driving around with a sticker on a trailer that was a whole whopping 1 day expired, but since the pandemic they are allowing expired stickers, so it wasn’t even illegal! Haha, I get too paranoid with breaking the law now. Catch ya on the flip flop big bear over and out! 🤙🤙
@@callthemall Yeah, what really made me mad about the expired inspection was the shops said they couldn't get to for like 6 hours, with an empty shop (all 3 bays) and they're walking around with nothing to do. @callthemall I know this is an old video. Maybe you'll see this reply. One time I went through WV without an ez pass and decided to set my gps to skip the tolls and I made it to my delivery but I have no idea how. Very stressful mistake.
Hahaha, I’m short haul truss hauler but I can relate to oversize permit problems, permit said must take all off ramps but I was shorter than the overpass and I went through it next thing I see are party lights
The low railroad bridges in the city . . . following the GPS along bushwacking roads instead of consulting the map book . . . threading through residential streets and impossible turns, etc. I can feel the sweat starting on my forehead reliving those moments early in my career. Rookie mistake #1: Blindly following GPS. Been there, done that. Western Pennsylvania for me. Have 7 years myself. 2 as owner/operator. I'm from Northwestern MN myself, 20 miles from the border. Used to run Winnipeg every week for 2 years. Kinda miss running Canada. Might add Canada to my authority within the next year.
@@raymondbradley6788 Yes sir, but it is part of the system they are being brought up in. Not their/his fault really. The RandMac gave me a lasting knowledge of the roads. For example, a GPS user generally has no idea what road he is or was on where a map reader knows and remembers. All part of the environment. I like this young man a lot. He is candid and honest and is born to drive. But there are a lot of wheel holders out there now, unlike him. I am not pretending I know it all, I'm just commenting on the state of the system. Peace and drive safe.
Hat off to you mate, most drivers / operators here in Australia are perfect drivers with perfect scores. I to learnt my lessons with the GPS a few times, lost faith in the GPS system, just use it to pin down my location. Plenty to learn, navigation, log books, permits, fatigue management, loading, traffic, idoits, plenty of paper work and so much more, forever learning. Good video! Thanks for being honest.

Great video, dude. I once followed my GPS from Toronto to Atlantic City via backroads and small highways because, surprise surprise, I had it set to ignore tolls because of the 407. GPS is a blessing and a curse, for sure!
In my early days I tried to block off the 407 from my gps routing. Never actually worked though, would always skip me an exit and get on at the next one 🙄
@@callthemall Would not surprise me at all if the 407 had its hooks in GPS software like they do at the licensing bureau. From the sound of things, that toll road in Arkansas or Oklahoma was taking lessons from the 407 for their prices....
That blasted GPS got people killed, in a car, a man followed his GPS, and the road he was on with his family WAS NOT PLOWED during the winter, he go stuck, went out for help, got lost and froze to death in the woods! There are many more examples that I know of , just too long to type, it’s crazy! I have old paper maps of the U.S. that say, “not plowed in winter months”. A former trucker here, LTL, I followed paper maps in my lap whilst going to my destination, never did me dirty, NEVER used GPS, and, GPS gets 4 wheelers in trouble, trying to put them on roads that do not exist anymore!! Happy trails driver, be safe!!
That last mistake was really incredible, your skills and luck saved you. Could have been pretty ugly. When it comes to wet roads I am a scary cat any where but worse in city traffic, I always think they're going to do that to me and brake when they should have kept on going, hate to say it but I always assume the worse of everyone around me in those conditions. Your speed and distance is usually the culprit! Also lucky with that Oversize permits one and the tolls, very lucky I say! My Trucker GPS kept routing me off from the Highway and into bad neighborhoods late at night in my car in Chicago. I figured the GPS knew something I didn't, that the Highway was closed for construction ect.. Turns out my GPS was totally out of whack because the Maps had not been updated for a long time. After waiting 25 years for high Speed Internet, I just got it and now I can to these map updates..
Following GPS has led me to more than a few low-bridge/low weight limit areas. I got a better GPS at that point but I also started paying a lot more attention to my routes. I've only encountered one toll booth personally that rejected EZ-Pass and whatever else we had but they just billed my company via license plate, think it was Southern Cali or maybe Texas... it's been a few years.
Not even a week into the job I found my self going into residential streets, even some steep ones where I should never have been, dead ends and low bridges. Residential streets with almost impossible right turns as well as a "dead end ahead" sign where I would have to stop in the middle of the road and blindside into what was likely the last street (residential) before the actually dead end.
Know where the low bridge in Brooklyn is my husband usually drove at night and I drove all day and for some reason he was still driving that morning and he told me to watch for the last exit to get off and I decided to look in my purse and wasn’t watching missed the sign and there was the low bridge a cop stopped the traffic we made a U turn and received a ticket in the mail to this day he says I did it on purpose because I was driving in Georgia one morning tons of eight o’clock traffic and he was still awake so I told him to watch for the exit to keep from going through the University of Georgia drove right up on the exit he shouting get over I was in the wrong lane traffic wouldn’t let me over so we took a tour of Georgia State University streets lined with trees and kids and cars fortunately a student told me to follow him and he would get me back to the interstate
y right mate , first time i used rand mcnally map book for 90% of the road and the rest using a GPS , never had a big prob .....driving nice and safe .........
Not proud of it but worst mistake I ever made was last year. I was on covid-time, exempt hours for housing supplies, more tired than I had ever felt before and ready for the day to end when I make the last turn towards the customer, crushing a freshly poured concrete curb and sidewalk. I was 500 ft from my destination. I learned my lesson for sure. Times are tough and I wanted to do the best I could for my country, I pushed myself to the limit and paid the price. I'm just glad it wasn't a person. You only get lucky so many times before it catches up to you.
Atlanta GA, is one heck of a scam fest. Had a guy claim the trailer hit his car when making a left turn. He had his car so far to the left of the right lane. He claimed to have like five cars. He wanted "da moneh" so bad, but didn't want police involved. I offered to call the police, since he wanted his "moneh" so badly, and then he just drove off.
ha ha ha i had some troubles with following the gps blind too. ha ha ha haaaaa i was driving in Switzerland and it should be only a short drive! I should be back at home the same night. so I typed in the coordinates and started. After 2 hours on the highway suddenly the dispatch called, to tell me that this load is very but very important to get there as soon as possible. ok, I took another look at the gps and there were 3 possible paths to go. One of them was 50 min. faster. So I took that one of course. BIG F*UCKIN MISTAKE. I enden up on a small road going up the hill. I was very heavy so I was driving with 30 KM/H all the way up with a loooong car colons behind me. it was too late to turn around so I was shitting my pants but I was like, yeah lets to this, just lets finish the job. sooo I ended up on 1900 meters above the sea level in a small village, and everybody was lookin at me like I was an alien. ha ha ha haaaaa ha ha. I asked a local old man to help me and he was just laughing his pants off... so he told me I should throw my gps away, on the street I was, there where no trucks allowed with my size.... he told me that I am not the first one and calmed me down, I should just drive carefully straight ahed following the road and I will end up at the highway again. I was 4 hours late at the destination. ha ha haha ha haaaaa. since then I don't trust the gps no more
Kansas and Oklahoma bring a new literal meaning to the phrase "highway robbery." Native Americans get away with murder in the US... and I mean that literally.
Were your hubcaps stolen in Chicago haha? Your story reminded me of that scene from National Lampoons Vacation where the Griswold's were culturally enriched by a wrong turn in Chicago.
Hey man! Love your videos brother. I’m from Chicago. And as soon as you said Chicago I was like I got write. I’m a straight truck driver here from a moving company. Just wanted to share there’s a website with all the bridges and heights. It has helped me a lot now that I became owner operator. Would love to share if you still drive through here.
I know exactly what road your taking about. Same thing happened to me. That’s Native American country over that way and they own those roads per federal govt
Sorry i know this is old but i drive manual everyday and cannot fathom how truckers use those transmissions. I dont think i could learn that if i was under threat to do so
I might be getting my states mixed here but I think Oklahoma and Kansas switched in recent years to allowing EZ-Pass... if it's not them then it must've been another state that had their own system...

yeah, don't follow the GPS if it tells you to go down US129 (Tail of the Dragon)...unless you're there to tear about in the FRS.

We have all been there any truck driver who says otherwise isn't a trucker. As for low bridges Amsterdam in the Netherlands is hard on the nerves

I always keep at the least 500 in my pocket because ya never know what's gonna happen on the road.
Know where the low bridge in Brooklyn is my husband usually drove at night and I drove all day and for some reason he was still driving that morning and he told me to watch for the last exit to get off and I decided to look in my purse and wasn’t watching missed the sign and there was the low bridge a cop stopped the traffic we made a U turn and received a ticket in the mail to this day he says I did it on purpose because I was driving in Georgia one morning tons of eight o’clock traffic and he was still awake so I told him to watch for the exit to keep from going through the University of Georgia drove right up on the exit he shouting get over I was in the wrong lane traffic wouldn’t let me over so we took a tour of Georgia State University streets lined with trees and kids and cars fortunately a student told me to follow him and he would get me back to the interstate

Not proud of it but worst mistake I ever made was last year. I was on covid-time, exempt hours for housing supplies, more tired than I had ever felt before and ready for the day to end when I make the last turn towards the customer, crushing a freshly poured concrete curb and sidewalk. I was 500 ft from my destination. I learned my lesson for sure. Times are tough and I wanted to do the best I could for my country, I pushed myself to the limit and paid the price. I'm just glad it wasn't a person. You only get lucky so many times before it catches up to you.

Atlanta GA, is one heck of a scam fest. Had a guy claim the trailer hit his car when making a left turn. He had his car so far to the left of the right lane. He claimed to have like five cars. He wanted "da moneh" so bad, but didn't want police involved. I offered to call the police, since he wanted his "moneh" so badly, and then he just drove off.
ha ha ha i had some troubles with following the gps blind too. ha ha ha haaaaa
i was driving in Switzerland and it should be only a short drive! I should be back at home the same night. so I typed in the coordinates and started. After 2 hours on the highway suddenly the dispatch called, to tell me that this load is very but very important to get there as soon as possible. ok, I took another look at the gps and there were 3 possible paths to go. One of them was 50 min. faster. So I took that one of course. BIG F*UCKIN MISTAKE. I enden up on a small road going up the hill. I was very heavy so I was driving with 30 KM/H all the way up with a loooong car colons behind me. it was too late to turn around so I was shitting my pants but I was like, yeah lets to this, just lets finish the job. sooo I ended up on 1900 meters above the sea level in a small village, and everybody was lookin at me like I was an alien. ha ha ha haaaaa ha ha. I asked a local old man to help me and he was just laughing his pants off... so he told me I should throw my gps away, on the street I was, there where no trucks allowed with my size.... he told me that I am not the first one and calmed me down, I should just drive carefully straight ahed following the road and I will end up at the highway again. I was 4 hours late at the destination. ha ha haha ha haaaaa. since then I don't trust the gps no more

Sorry i know this is old but i drive manual everyday and cannot fathom how truckers use those transmissions. I dont think i could learn that if i was under threat to do so

I might be getting my states mixed here but I think Oklahoma and Kansas switched in recent years to allowing EZ-Pass... if it's not them then it must've been another state that had their own system...

You're not allowed to do oversized at night?!?! Here in New Zealand they mostly do oversized loads at night to minimize disruption
I think a lot of the gps issues are operator error. Either setup is wrong or using car routes.
Gps is just like a map. Thet are both useless if you dont know how to use them.
